Dear Clients of TTVH,

I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to help care for your pets for the past 3 years. Today was my last day practicing at Tigertown, as I have accepted a faculty position at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

I will be forever grateful for beginning my veterinary career here. Drs. Graham and Misty Carroll are not only wonderful veterinarians, but even better people. Drs. Carroll, the support staff (you know who you are 😘), and you all have helped shape me into the veterinarian I am today.

Cheers and War Eagle,
Dr. Laura Anna Cain

This is so important!

Puppy socialisation is NOT just about playing with other dogs.

In fact, too much uncontrolled exposure to other dogs can cause so many unintended consequences.

If you have a puppy, make sure you try to work on ALL aspects of socialisation, as listed in the bottom graphic.

Sounds like the perfect solution... kids itching to walk their new dog + over-stretched parents thrilled that their children are taking responsibility and lightening the workload! What's not to love?

Actually quite a LOT.

I can't tell you how many disappointed faces I see when I try to explain why a child walking a dog ALONE *might NOT be* the best idea for anyone!!?

And I get totally it.

If this is your first family dog, a quick spin around the block may look harmless enough - until you consider ALL of the things that can (and DO) go wrong.

Even (mentally and physically) FULLY-GROWN ADULTS get pulled down to the ground, or dragged over to squirrels, skateboards and the neighborhood cat. They accidentally drop leashes, or watch helplessly as their pup slips their collar. They struggle to control their dog around other dogs, or conversely, they panic or freeze when an off-leash dog comes sprinting full-speed towards them (friendly or not friendly.. who knows? They’ll likely find out when it’s too late!)

And this is ONLY a handful of the things that can happen to GROWN UPS… so for kids the stakes are simply exponentially higher.

As a trainer, I’m pretty calculated about where I go, and when I walk my dogs my radar is always activated. Even still, I’ve personally had to dash after my loose dog, I’ve been bitten by a dog who was attacking mine, I’ve seen a dog run over in a school parking lot, and watched a child be literally dragged for 50ft against her will!

So, I hope by sharing the potential risks with you, you can make informed choices about your family dog walking situation:

Here’s my hotlist of things to consider:

Size - of child and dog
Strength - of child and dog
Maturity - of child and dog
Training - of child and dog
Temperament - of child and dog

Then download, print and share our poster.
THESE are my questions to help families size up the COMBINATION of their dog and child to see whether WALKING ALONE together is a SMART call.

25% off microchips for the months of May and June!!! The month of May is designated “Chip Your Pet Month” while June is “National Microchip Month”. 1 in 3 pets go missing each year. Without ID, 90% of those pets don’t come home. We would hate for anyone to lose their beloved pet, which is why we are raising awareness.

May is National Pet Month! Ask us about our Wellness program at your fur baby’s next visit.

As veterinarians, we often wish we could just ask our patients to tell us where it hurts. Unfortunately, evaluating sick pets is much more complicated, which is why blood work is such a valuable diagnostic tool.
Routine blood work can help determine causes of illness, verify organ health prior to anesthetized medical treatments, and aid in the general maintenance of healthy pets.

Regular lab work allows us to assess symptoms we cannot see or feel, such as indicators of liver disease or diabetes. In healthy pets, blood work helps doctors establish a “baseline” for each individual dog or cat. A baseline blood panel determines what is considered “normal” for a particular pet. This is especially important if the pet becomes ill because it helps the veterinarian to more accurately interpret any changes in blood work results.

Performing blood tests on healthy pets can also detect underlying problems, which your veterinarian may be able to treat before they become a bigger issue.

Does your pet’s breath stink? When was the last time your dog/cat had a thorough oral examination by a veterinarian?

Early intervention is key in preventing advanced periodontal disease. Periodontal disease doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth. Other health problems found in association with periodontal disease include kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes.

It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Tartar above the gumline can often easily be seen and removed, but plaque and tartar below the gumline is damaging and sets the stage for infection and damage to the jawbone and the tissues that connect the tooth to the jaw bone. Periodontal disease is graded on a scale of 0 (normal) to 4 (severe).

Below are before, during, and after pictures of a patient who recently came in for a dental. These pictures show what stage 4 periodontal disease looks like. *pictures posted with owner permission*
