Cats are remarkable athletes! 🐈 Their superiority in speed, precision, and flexibility are only matched by their extraordinary ability to sleep 12 to 16 hours a day. When they aren't sleeping, these little speed gymnasts can sometimes accidentally get into potentially hazardous situations. One instance could be their collars catching on protruding objects, trapping or injuring them. Cats may also try to escape their collar and catch their leg or their lower jaw in the collar, making it hard for them to move. If anything like this happens to a cat without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous for them.

Some people think collars are not necessary for cats that don't go outside or that they won't tolerate them. But cats can get out accidentally so for their safety, inside or outside, we recommend getting them used to wearing one. Breakaway collars save cat lives! ❀😸

Beware of wild mushrooms growing around your home this year πŸ„ There are 4 main categories of mushrooms to watch out for:

Hepatotoxic mushrooms are the most toxic. Owners may see their pet nibble on this mushroom but do not become concerned because their pet looks fine after. But 6-24 hours later, GI symptoms start to occur. Mild stomach upset can progress into liver failure if not treated immediately.

Neurotoxic & Nephrotoxic mushrooms affect the nervous system and potentially the kidneys and liver as well. Signs include weakness, lack of coordination, tremors, hallucinations, vocalizations, disorientation, agitation, and seizures.

Gastrointestinal toxic mushrooms can cause GI upset, including vomiting and diarrhea. Out-patient treatment may suffice, but hospitalization is often required to restore fluid balance.

If you suspect your dog has eaten a wild mushroom (of any kind), don’t wait. Contact your nearest ER immediately. If you can, take a sample of the mushroom with you. This will help the vet determine how they can best help your dog.

It’s and this week is - an important reminder to us all that many people are going through silent struggles. Our very own veterinary health teams are at particularly high risk due to stressful job demands and the emotional toll of providing medical care for animals in need. However, anyone can be susceptible to suicidal thoughts so we should always be mindful and kind to each other.

Visit nomv.org (Not One More Vet) to learn about the resources and support for all members of veterinary teams and students who may be struggling or considering su***de.

With approaching, we want to remind you to keep your pets happy, healthy, and safe this holiday weekend with these tips:

β˜€οΈ Beat the heat: Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your furry friends to keep cool.

🍽️ Protect your plate: Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day Weekend such as onions, corn cobs, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, and more can be toxic to pets or pose a choking hazard.

πŸ” Guard the grill: Keep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches in order to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.

πŸŽ† Forego the fireworks: Not only can fireworks frighten pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Keep your pets calm and safe in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area.

If your pet should experience an emergency over the holiday weekend, contact your nearest ER. First Coast Veterinary Specialists and Emergency is open 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

08/21/2024

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a condition commonly referred to as bloat. This is a critical medical issue for dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Bloat happens when gas or food stretches a dog's stomach. The distended stomach rotates, trapping the gas inside, and blocking off the stomach's blood supply. This can develop quickly, without warning, and requires immediate medical attention.

Here are a few ways you can help prevent bloat:

🐢 Encourage your dog to eat slowly
🐢 Feed smaller controlled portions
🐢 Don’t feed them right after exercise or when over-excited/panting heavily
🐢 Keep them at a healthy weight

If you suspect your dog has bloat, contact your nearest emergency clinic.

August is ! Are you curious as to why your pet keeps scratching? Not sure how to provide them with some relief? Itchy skin could signify flea allergy dermatitis, hotspots, atopic dermatitis, or a skin infection.

It’s best to identify that there is an issue early as this makes it easier to treat!
Treatment options may include applying anti-parasitic ear drops, medication to treat infections caused by scratching, and ongoing parasite prevention. To identify the best treatment for your pet's condition, always consult with your primary care veterinarian for guidance.

If your pet is experiencing an infection, contact your primary care veterinarian. πŸ’™

Many snail and slug poisons contain metaldehyde, which is extremely toxic and even fatal to both dogs and cats. Pets are often attracted to the smell and will likely eat the bait if it’s within reach. Once ingested, metaldehyde impacts the nervous system, resulting in muscle tremors. Pets can die from hyperthermia, respiratory or cardiac collapse.

If you discover your pet recently ate snail bait, bring them to your nearest hospital immediately for emergency care.

You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
