Global Neighbors,
How very proud of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc to re-present our beautiful and beloved sister to the world, in our own way!
“Yes, yes! Her full life legacy lives on through countless recipients of ‘her touch’!
I, for one, appreciated her elegant grace with interpretive dance representations however done.
Thank you, Sister Grace for bringing us more clearly into enlightenment!
Well done!☝🏾🤟🏾🙏🏾”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated joins the world in celebrating the life and legacy of our beloved Honorary Member Judith Jamison. Judith Jamison, renowned dancer and choreographer, made her transition at the age of 81 on November 9, 2024.
A native of Philadelphia, Soror Jamison began taking lessons at the Judimar School of Dance at the age of six. She went on to study the techniques of African American dance pioneer Katherine Dunham and eventually studied dance and kinesiology at the Philadelphia Dance Academy, now part of the University of the Arts. In 1964, Jamison earned critical acclaim for her work with choreographer Agnes de Mille and the American Ballet Theatre in New York. She began with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965. Soror Jamison's graceful talent served as inspiration for Mr. Alvin Ailey for over 15 years. She would go on to serve as Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for 21 years, where she brought the Company to unprecedented heights.
Her dynamic career as a dancer, choreographer, director and speaker, has leapt over barriers of race and gender. We pay homage to the rich legacy she leaves. May she take her rest, knowing that her job here on earth was done exceptionally well.
