For the third time in the history of the Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB), the SC State University Marching 101 Band is headed to Atlanta, Ga. to defend its title as the “best band in the land.” The Marching 101 will take to a national stage to perform among other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) during the annual invitational showcase, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at the Georgia Dome.
The Honda, as it is known in the marching band community, was created to celebrate, support and recognize the excellence of African-American college marching bands and the unique academic experience offered by HBCUs.
Ecstatic about the Marching 101 Band’s upcoming performance, Eddie Ellis, director of bands, is gearing up, developing routines and formations that will bring the audience to its feet.
“I am extremely delighted and honored that the South Carolina State Marching 101 Band has been selected to participate in this invitational showcase from Honda. The company’s corporate social responsibility to the community will aid in advancing our program,” said Ellis.
“SC State University students are talented and gifted musically. Their tenacious spirit and determination will be exemplified for all to see during the showcase.”
Ellis says the band’s invitation to participate in the showdown can be attributed to the tenacious Bulldog spirit. Students, alumni and friends of the university voted daily for the Marching 101 Band to showcase their musical talents among rival HBCUs.
The showcase, however, is much more than a display of musical showmanship. The American Honda Motor Company, Inc. uses the event to invest in the music education programs at the nation’s HBCUs. The company awards a $20,000 grant to each participating institution. Additionally, the bands receive an all-expense paid trip to Atlanta for the showcase.
Other university bands selected to perform are: Alabama A&M University, Marching Maroon & White; Alabama State University, Mighty Marching Hornets; Bethune-Cookman University, Marching Wildcats; Morehouse College, The Marching Maroon Tigers; North Carolina A & T University, Blue and Gold Marching Machine; University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, UAPB Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South and Winston-Salem State University’s Red Sea of Sound.
“The HBOB is a celebration of the unique HBCU marching band experience and culture,” said Gina Jorge, head of Multicultural Marketing for American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in a written statement.
“The Invitational Showcase is a spectacular display of the results of months of dedication and preparation, and Honda is proud to continue to support the nation’s HBCU music education programs.”
