Special Story from Korea POST 9/11 - After watching 9/11 unfold around 9pm Korea-time(an evening of shock & crying as we watched person after person jump out the windows)
First thing the next morning, I went in to meet GENERAL Schwartz ( The USFK General )and told him that I wanted to have him fly myself and my Search Dog Drakkar flown to New York to join our fellow members of the American Rescue Team International in NYC.
General Schwartz told me that all airspace in the United States was closed and even General Luck and his wife Leah were stuck in Hawaii and could not fly back. I explained that I really needed to go back to help my team so he asked me to give him two hours to see what he could work out. When I went back, he said “well I have good news and I have bad news”, I asked him to give me the good news first…
He said that he had secured to have me flown in a fighter jet back to New York with my dog but said it would be tight fitting with me and the dog however due to no planes in airspace, we would get there in less than half the normal flight time of 14 hours. I then asked him what the bad news was and he said that if my search dog and I left there would be no search dogs in Korea as I brought the first search dog over to KOREA, and Drakkar & I were it!!!
He also explained to me(at the time) that it was “top-secret” that there were additional plans to bomb several US Military bases in Asia but our military amazing intelligence guys discovered the plans and stopped those attacks before they happened. He said that if we flew back to New York, we would leave KOREA without a search and rescue K9 team. We were just civilian volunteers and like Korea, there were no others. He then personally asked me to please stay as all the military bases in Asia we’re going to be locked down in a red state of emergency for at least a month or more in order to make sure no other attacks were carried out.
Honestly it was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make in my life, but I decided to stay with my dog and make sure that my husband and all of our fellow military members were safe and that Drakkar and I had their backs…
