Well it seems that this winter has been all about the Paints. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some challenging, funny, and personality filled Paints this last few months. Rain was here for a few months at the end of fall for a tune up, Johnny Ringo came in to add some new buttons, and Nemo is back for a refresher. The view between the ears is similar every ride but the growth in each was and is astounding. I’m super proud of these kids.

I may have been quiet on my posts lately but the ponies are still getting worked rain or shine. Bonus, the new arena is holding up fabulously! We do have openings for starting youngsters and tuneups. Send us a message to get a refresher on your riding partner so they are ready to go for your spring and summer rides!

Well we did it, we survived another year. They say that the third year in business is the hardest one but take that nonsense somewhere else! While we have been riding, training, coaching and competing for decades, Krystle's Quarters finished year three as a full time operation since we re-opened in Oregon City and we couldn’t be happier!

As many of you know this was in fact a challenging year for our family and it’s not over yet, but we want to reflect on all the growth and moments from this past year. I always go back and tally the year and it never ceases to amaze me when I make these anniversary posts on what we accomplished. This last year for us saw 313 lessons, 18 horses in for training (9 total restarts, 6 tune ups, and 3 weanlings-2yo for manners and handling) and 1 horse sold for a client. For our personal horses there were some big ups and downs. My older gaming horse had an injury and after rehab told us he was done with his former love so we retired him to just being a lesson horse and he is thriving there. Our steady old lesson boy had some things with his old body that he had to take time off for but he came back and is doing well. A previously leased lesson pony went back to his family to help teach their littles. Those all had silver linings and we are grateful for what they have given and are happy to care for them in their adjusted lives in every way we can. That said our next generation of super stars have stepped up and are handling their roles perfectly. Both the 4yos that I started the last couple years have grown immensely and I’m so proud of them. They are giving lessons regularly and are growing in skills for their futures. They have big shoes to fill but I have high hopes for them both and they are rocking their roles! I also have one big youngster for a client that hits the gaming competition trail this winter for seasoning and so far he is going to be super cool. Watch for updates on him.

This year also saw huge improvements in our facility and what we can offer our clients. We added 2 more stalls, a matted patience post, larger parking area, some add ons to our obstacle course, and of course the biggest addition was our brand new all weather 85’x150’ year round arena with lights! This has been a joy to ride in this summer but it will be a game changer to be able to offer that option year round. Previously we just had a seasonal dirt arena and our year round sand round pen (still have the round pen!) but thanks to an amazing partner and some incredible supporters, this dream project came to life and I am beyond grateful for everything that went in to it.

I sit here thinking back on the year, the moments, the work, the efforts, the aha moments for both students and horses, the times of struggle and the times I got to watch the pure joy and have my heart swell as I saw the tiniest of things become huge successes, those moments are my why. I got to meet some incredible people, see some amazing horses, make some friends that I will forever cherish, and support our community with sponsorships and clinics. I am beyond grateful for every single person that stuck with our family this year, that allowed us to be part of their journeys, that helped us grow and give back. We are excited to see what year 4 brings us and to see the continued growth in all our clients, horses, and home. A huge THANK YOU to each and every one that follows our page and shares our story. Keep an eye out for the next chapter as there will be many more opportunities for training, lessons, clinics, open haul ins, and I’m sure much more. Cheers friends and THANK YOU!!!!! 💜🩵

If you asked me what my favorite thing is about what I do I couldn’t pick just one, but if you asked me what ONE of my favorite things is about what I do, this right here is in the top of the list. How could my heart not be happy when I get to stand in the arena that we built ourselves, on the place we are building from scratch, listening to students laugh while learning, on home grown horses or really good ones we’ve been blessed with, while looking at the amazing sunsets that nature provides. This is one of the many things that I love about this life I get to live. 💜🩵

Let’s look at another good girl that went back to her family after being here for a restart. Meet Dakota. She is a 4yo AQHA mare that is a full sister to Sarge that we have met recently as I’m working him on gaming patterns. She had 30 days as a 2yo then sat the last two years. She came in last month to be restarted. While she was here she got back to wtc under saddle, took to a bridle, got her first trail ride, was hauled out to her first game show to just walk around all the excitement for exposure, gave a few lessons, and just showed she is a solid girl in whatever was thrown at her. She did so well that her mom felt confident to take her home and keep working her from there. This girl was a rockstar from day 1. Good job Dakota. I’m excited to see what you do for your family 💜

We have one spot left for October. There is plenty of time to get your kiddo going under saddle or for ground work. Fall is the best time to get those late bloomers going!

Fall gaming shows have kicked off and last weekend was a big day. You may remember Sarge. He is a 5yo gelding that had 90 days on the barrel pattern as a 3yo and then sat for awhile. He came here in June for a restart on barrels. We’ve been puttering through making progress. Well he officially will be staying with us through the winter season so we decided to add to his toolbox and enter some game shows. He had never seen any patterns besides barrels up until a few weeks ago, and before this weekend had only seen a couple of them to trot and slow lope through. He had never seen a flag until 3 days ago.

Sunday was the first of the Canby Games fall series, and a great show it was! Off we went for Sarge’s first full day show. Folks he was a rockstar! This was his first time in that arena, first time on most of these events, first time running two lanes (so another horse running beside him), and this arena has light spots filtering through all over. He handled it all with awareness but calm and even helped several other horses get in the arena. I saftey-ed up a lot, we were clunky through some, I made some miscalculations, but this big hearted boy just kept under me, listened as best he could and he gave me his try all dang day long. We pulled out our first 15 second barrel run for first in our age division and 7th in barrels overall for the day. We were second in figure 8 (first time running it), and fourth in flags and poles (first time running either of those). We zigged instead of zagged on KeyRace for a NT (again totally new to him) but we ended up 3rd in the average for our division for the day.

To say I’m proud of this boy would be a huge understatement. I am so looking forward to this season with him and can only imagine with this being our first show, where he will take us. Good boy Sarge! 🤩

What a busy weekend we had of stripping stalls, scrubbing every bucket and water trough on the place (that’s a lot!), hosing out stalls, and resetting for the THREE new kids on the block that came in Sunday 🤯. Busy, busy barn we have with an almost full book of lessons and a bursting training barn.

Let’s introduce you today to one of the new kids. Meet Stella. This cute little buckskin is a 2yo filly that came to boot camp to learn the next steps in being a good citizen of the barn. Last night Stella got some work on personal space, bottles and things around her, fly spray, picking up feet, holding feet between legs and putting feet on hoof stands (help your farriers out folks!), standing patiently tied, and brushing all the mane and tail to be shiny.

Folks I can’t tell you how many grown horses I get in that I’m told have never tied, bathed, fly sprayed, blanketed, aren’t good with feet, trailering, etc. If they haven’t had that much done then yes we can definitely work on that BUT if you get them young and teach them to be good, well handled citizens when they are young, Jackpot! I love when people bring me their little ones to learn all the basics. They don’t have to be older to learn. They are sponges when they are younger, let them soak up the good stuff!

Stella did well tonight and this was only day one for her. Check back in to see her progress as she is here and to see updates on the other kiddos in for a visit.

Up and early with the heat today. We recently decided to switch it up with Sarge and play with poles. This is something totally new to him. I like to pattern all my horses on different things to get them off the same three barrels, and get them listening and partnering with me no matter what I ask for, where the turn is, what my legs are saying, or what obstacle is in front of them. We have some work to do still as is expected with any new thing, but he is trying and he’s getting it. I’ll take that any day. Good boy Sarge!

Last weekend I got to go play with our personal horses. I found myself with half a day open and decided I was going to take advantage of it and work the 4yos. My sister/brother in law and family live a couple hours away and have a roping arena. I’ve been talking for over a year about hauling down to see them and introduce my young horses to cows and I decided it was about dang time to get on it. A couple of texts later the kiddos were loaded and we were off.

This was Sages longest trailer ride since coming home from the pens at a year old. Gunner has been to the coast so is an old hand at traveling. This would be their first introduction to chickens, cows, flags flying high over the arena (we have worked with flags on the ground but don’t have a flag pole yet), roping boxes and stripping chutes that were being worked (we even were working both chutes from the saddle on both kids by the time we were done), ropes swinging off other horses, all the stuff that goes with roping and more. Gunner was a little apprehensive about the cows but once he figured out when the chute opens he can chase them he was all about that. Sage didn’t care a lick about leaving the box at any speed and preferred to sit back and watch the cows leave then trot her little butt down to get them but once she got to them she was LOCKED on tracking all on her own all over the place. She even decided that following them into the stripping chute and pushing them on up with her nose was helpful. She also pushed cows a little down the alley with total confidence.

Both these guys got an A+ for the day overall. They each had one little moment but redirected easily. It was a big day for them and a fun day for me. It’s been a hot minute (decade) since I’ve rode with the family and it was well worth the trip.

Also Gunner got his first big kid treatment session as sis was generous enough to look him over for me and use her PEMF machine on him. Of course she’s my sister but I independently truly respect her life’s dedication to study of equines and the knowledge she has in treating and caring for her horses. If you are in the South Willamette Valley area reach out to P3 Horse Co. to have her work on your four legged kiddos.

Thanks family for letting me come work through the babies. It was an awesome day!!! I didn’t get a lot of pics but here’s a few.

Yesterday we introduced you to 9YO Jax that came in for a quick three week tune up. He came along quite well in the arena but today let’s look at the trail ride we went on.

He was a little spicy when we first arrived looking around at all the activity as the parking lot was very busy. We decided to do some flat work before we headed out to refocus his attention. Knowing we were going out on obstacles I wanted his brain on me and not the activity around us. They say you will never connect with a horses body until you connect with his mind, and that is very true. I try very hard to honor that.

With a little reconnection and a new focus we were off and what a joyful ride we had! This boy excelled on all the obstacles! He was a little watchy at first on the flats but tackled every obstacle with zest and confidence. Well the water he questioned slightly but with a little convincing, right on through we went. Jax was a dream to ride on this outing. We hope his owners enjoy their new boy. Good boy Jax, we are so proud of you!

Let’s see if I can catch up on some of the horses that have been here lately. This is Jax, a 9YO gelding that came in for a 3 week tune up while his family was traveling. He was spunky and needed a little help remembering his manners but he’s a good boy. Once we found his groove his leg yields, haunch and sidepassing, gaits and transitions, all smoothed out and his head came down. He was a champ on trails too but that’s another post. I was pretty happy with this boy for just the few short weeks we were here.

We have openings for ground work, tune ups, starts and patterning at Krystle's Quarters!
