What a busy weekend we had of stripping stalls, scrubbing every bucket and water trough on the place (that’s a lot!), hosing out stalls, and resetting for the THREE new kids on the block that came in Sunday 🤯. Busy, busy barn we have with an almost full book of lessons and a bursting training barn.

Let’s introduce you today to one of the new kids. Meet Stella. This cute little buckskin is a 2yo filly that came to boot camp to learn the next steps in being a good citizen of the barn. Last night Stella got some work on personal space, bottles and things around her, fly spray, picking up feet, holding feet between legs and putting feet on hoof stands (help your farriers out folks!), standing patiently tied, and brushing all the mane and tail to be shiny.

Folks I can’t tell you how many grown horses I get in that I’m told have never tied, bathed, fly sprayed, blanketed, aren’t good with feet, trailering, etc. If they haven’t had that much done then yes we can definitely work on that BUT if you get them young and teach them to be good, well handled citizens when they are young, Jackpot! I love when people bring me their little ones to learn all the basics. They don’t have to be older to learn. They are sponges when they are younger, let them soak up the good stuff!

Stella did well tonight and this was only day one for her. Check back in to see her progress as she is here and to see updates on the other kiddos in for a visit.

Up and early with the heat today. We recently decided to switch it up with Sarge and play with poles. This is something totally new to him. I like to pattern all my horses on different things to get them off the same three barrels, and get them listening and partnering with me no matter what I ask for, where the turn is, what my legs are saying, or what obstacle is in front of them. We have some work to do still as is expected with any new thing, but he is trying and he’s getting it. I’ll take that any day. Good boy Sarge!

Last weekend I got to go play with our personal horses. I found myself with half a day open and decided I was going to take advantage of it and work the 4yos. My sister/brother in law and family live a couple hours away and have a roping arena. I’ve been talking for over a year about hauling down to see them and introduce my young horses to cows and I decided it was about dang time to get on it. A couple of texts later the kiddos were loaded and we were off.

This was Sages longest trailer ride since coming home from the pens at a year old. Gunner has been to the coast so is an old hand at traveling. This would be their first introduction to chickens, cows, flags flying high over the arena (we have worked with flags on the ground but don’t have a flag pole yet), roping boxes and stripping chutes that were being worked (we even were working both chutes from the saddle on both kids by the time we were done), ropes swinging off other horses, all the stuff that goes with roping and more. Gunner was a little apprehensive about the cows but once he figured out when the chute opens he can chase them he was all about that. Sage didn’t care a lick about leaving the box at any speed and preferred to sit back and watch the cows leave then trot her little butt down to get them but once she got to them she was LOCKED on tracking all on her own all over the place. She even decided that following them into the stripping chute and pushing them on up with her nose was helpful. She also pushed cows a little down the alley with total confidence.

Both these guys got an A+ for the day overall. They each had one little moment but redirected easily. It was a big day for them and a fun day for me. It’s been a hot minute (decade) since I’ve rode with the family and it was well worth the trip.

Also Gunner got his first big kid treatment session as sis was generous enough to look him over for me and use her PEMF machine on him. Of course she’s my sister but I independently truly respect her life’s dedication to study of equines and the knowledge she has in treating and caring for her horses. If you are in the South Willamette Valley area reach out to P3 Horse Co. to have her work on your four legged kiddos.

Thanks family for letting me come work through the babies. It was an awesome day!!! I didn’t get a lot of pics but here’s a few.

Yesterday we introduced you to 9YO Jax that came in for a quick three week tune up. He came along quite well in the arena but today let’s look at the trail ride we went on.

He was a little spicy when we first arrived looking around at all the activity as the parking lot was very busy. We decided to do some flat work before we headed out to refocus his attention. Knowing we were going out on obstacles I wanted his brain on me and not the activity around us. They say you will never connect with a horses body until you connect with his mind, and that is very true. I try very hard to honor that.

With a little reconnection and a new focus we were off and what a joyful ride we had! This boy excelled on all the obstacles! He was a little watchy at first on the flats but tackled every obstacle with zest and confidence. Well the water he questioned slightly but with a little convincing, right on through we went. Jax was a dream to ride on this outing. We hope his owners enjoy their new boy. Good boy Jax, we are so proud of you!

Let’s see if I can catch up on some of the horses that have been here lately. This is Jax, a 9YO gelding that came in for a 3 week tune up while his family was traveling. He was spunky and needed a little help remembering his manners but he’s a good boy. Once we found his groove his leg yields, haunch and sidepassing, gaits and transitions, all smoothed out and his head came down. He was a champ on trails too but that’s another post. I was pretty happy with this boy for just the few short weeks we were here.

We have openings for ground work, tune ups, starts and patterning at Krystle's Quarters!

Last minute training opening! Let’s make a deal!

Had a horse scheduled to come in that didn’t pass vet check so we have a stall open for August. Deposit was already paid so this is a chance at a discounted training stall. $900 if I provide alfalfa, $800 if you provide all feed. Also willing to look at a multi month discount. This is a great chance to get a young one started, or put a tune up on one while you go on vacation or get the kids back in the swing of sports and school coming up. We also do groundwork and handling of youngsters, as well as our new arena allows for full gaming patterning.

Additionally I’m feeling like I want to start another young one this month. I’m toying with the idea of a 6 month training contract at a steep discount to put a real solid start on a young one. Message Krystle's Quarters LLC in Oregon City for any of these openings!

Where did June go! We have been so busy I didn’t realize I hadn’t shared in so long. Our family has had some big things happening and to our clients that have been so flexible with us THANK YOU!

Also JULY openings. We have one spot left for the rest of the month. If you need a tune up or miles put on your youngster, maybe trails and obstacles, or started on gaming patterns, let’s make a deal! Also taking reservations for August and September.

I want to share so many things from the last few weeks but I will just give some highlights for now. *Little Miss Teeter was here for a month. She had about 80 rides on her from her previous trainer. She was just so gosh dang sweet and a love bug. Very willing and just wants to please. She will be a great kids horse and just needs the exposure to make her great, she’s already got a solid foundation. She’s looking for her next home and would be perfect for a 4H or handy kid wanting to make their own forever horse. She got to go out on her first trail ride last week and we did it all! I’ll post video later.
*Sage is up to 17 rides. One of my solid students has rode her a couple times now as well and she’s had a few trail rides. We went out yesterday and she got to be the demonstration horse for another horse to show that it was ok to go over obstacles. We got to go in the river for the first time too! This was her first time hauling out on her own and she handled it well.
*Sarge hauled out to a barrel race a couple weeks ago. Part of seasoning horses is getting them used to environments. It was a learning day for him on a lot of things but he’s making progress.
*Guess who is back, Arrow! The big grey mare from last summer is back for a tune up. I’ll update on her soon.
*Nemo was back for a tune up last month too and even gave a lesson.
*Then there is Razzy, our little POA lesson horse. He was here on lease to help kiddos learn to ride. He loves the kids so much but was starting to get smart about who he could overpower and who he had to listen to. I’m always an advocate for listening to your horse and he was saying he needed a break so Mr Razzy went home to his owner and their family. He will be teaching their next generation about horses and will love the break and attention. Thank You Razzy for the memories! Be good buddy!

Wow, so much. A new one comes in today and many updates will come. Remember we have open arena haul ins and we have lights to ride in the evening. Stay safe out there folks!

Boy has time flew by. We have been super busy with all the horses and June is a busy month for our family. We have new horses in, some horses out, amazing rides with clients, and baby Sage is just blowing us away with her willingness and easy going attitude.

Today though I want to check back in on Sarge. He is the big red boy that came in last month to get back going on barrels. He was board stiff to the right, dropped his shoulder really bad on his first and was quite chargey on all three. We got his teeth done, have been working on standing him up, and trying to help him stay flatter leaving his turns. Yesterday I just went out and breezed him through real quick and husband was able to grab a quick video. He got a little lost coming off the third but I’m loving how this boy is standing up so much better, being much softer in the bridle, and listening more to his rider for help rather than charging through on his own. We have some work to do still but he’s coming along nicely. Bonus is he’s a pleasure to have in the barn and to ride. Always rates down or opens just as much as I want. He’s a good big boy that has a bright future.

Sometimes making good youngsters includes throwing shenannigans at them and seeing what they will put up with. Today was a LONG day of lessons, new horses in, catching up on chores, etc. By the end of the day I knew I needed to go work some more horses but didn’t have much left in the tank. I grabbed a bridle and grabbed baby Sage and headed for a quick ba****ck ride. Her 13th ride, she’s in heat, new horses and the geldings around, and she was perfect. I said what the heck and asked her to trot and lope. This was only her second time loping and baby girl was easy and smooth as silk. Just for fun I grabbed a video between the ears. Don’t mind the somewhat lack of steering, remember this is a young green horse with 13 spread out rides total and I’m loping ba****ck with one hand on the reins and the other holding a phone. Enjoy the ride!

Baby Sages 10th and 11th rides were this last week. First trail rides, first obstacle ride, also first lope, back cinch, and ponying another horse. She did so well!

05/17/2024

I spend a lot of time with clients and their horses, helping them move forward, also advocating for the horse’s needs to give them the best opportunity to thrive. I often am asked if turning my passion into my job has jeopardized my joy. To be honest, some days I wonder what crazy hare-brained moment I was in when I said yes to this career, but truly I LOVE my job. Some days are hard, some days hurt, some days I want to quit but I am consistently rewarded by helping others move toward their goals and seeing horses make connections that help them be positive and willing partners. That is why I do what I do and by gosh I will keep doing it!

Some days though there is more than a rewarding feeling, there is true, pure, overflowing joy. This often comes from lesson students having an “aha” moment or a horse putting pieces together and relaxing as they figure things out. This week however I was reminded by some dear friends to take time to nurture my passion on more platforms so last night I took a break from riding other folks’ horses and pulled out my babies and boy was my cup running over with joy by the end of the night!

Gunner is my 4yo QH gelding that I started last year. He had probably the equivalent of 6 months total on him before he got pushed to the back burner and he sat over the fall and winter with a few rides here and there. His last ride was by one of my students in early February so I was expecting some sass. He saddled up and went walk/trot/canter like a pro just like I had rode him yesterday. He also ponied another horse for the first time ever with baby Sage and he took to it in just a handful of strides like a seasoned mount dragging her lazy butt around the arena. This guy absolutely amazes me every time I swing a leg over him! Speaking of baby Sage, she also is 4yo this summer. I got her as an untouched yearling mustang and have done very little with her, her last ride also being early February by a student. Last night I put her 9th ride on her and she was a rockstar. This was baby girl’s first time in the big arena, first time with a back cinch, first time LOPING, and on last nights episode of “How many ways can I try to die” I figured why not go for broke so I ponied Gunner off of Sage and she was perfect! Not often can you pony a young one off another young one with less than 10 rides! Oh and that trot and lope, pure butter. So smooth and dreamy to ride. My gosh, if I could have a barn full of 4yos like these two….. I am SO gosh darn proud of my babies! They both amaze me everytime.

Remember friends to check your cup of joy once in awhile, you may feel pretty good in life already, but it’s never bad to get a top off 😉

When we say we start them from the ground we don’t mean just ground work before riding. We also work with youngsters on being well behaved citizens of the barn. All things that make good saddle horses start when they are young in everyday handling. Haltering, leading, brushing, feet/trims, bathing, tying, trailering, patience, respect of personal space, just good basic manners are all important and lay the foundation for a good horse to grow.

This little cutie is here for just that. She will be one this weekend and comes halter broke and handled but needing a solid foundation of manners and introduced to life in a busy barn. She has a a good start but today we added to that with brushing the winter fuzz off, getting hosed down, respect of space with backing off my body motion, loading and unloading as well as some time at the patience post. She is a sweetheart but pushy. I think her family will be happy to see what she learns here and what tools she goes home with. For now we will call her baby S although one student has already petitioned for her to be called Jolene and baby Jo/Jojo for short. She is here for 10 days and I’m excited to play with her. Happy Friday all!

We often joke around that your horse doesn’t have to be red to come here, but it helps 😁 Today I find myself on yet another red headed pony. Ok so at 16hands maybe he’s not a pony but the view sure looks pretty close to some of the days I’ve had on my big red guy. Let me introduce you to the latest clients horse to come in, meet Sarge!

Sarge is a 5yo gelding that was started elsewhere on the pattern last year. He was hauled to a few races then sat over the winter. He came in last weekend to be restarted back on barrels, haul to a few more races, and ultimately get him and his owner going together so they can go have fun. Sarge hasn’t been rode in a few months and I stepped on him after a quick lunge and rode right off. He handled the new arena and rider with ease. Thank You big boy, much appreciation for that! Today we did slow work getting to know each other. We have a game plan to get him standing up around his turns instead of being chargey into them, get his shoulders unstuck and get some lateral and rib control, and to get his head a bit more level to help his mechanics. Overall for day one with new rider, new arena, and new expectations he handled it quite well. A good minded youngster is a pleasure to have in the barn. Check back for updates on this guy!

In a training barn some horses you create memories with as you help each other build and learn. You always know they are going on and you do your best to help their future. Some of those horses stick with you a little deeper though and are always part of you. Today a part of my barn went home to her family and to be completely honest I think she took a little sliver of my heart with her.

Miss Kiki has been here just over a year. She came in as a beautiful, sweet but sassy almost 3 yo filly that had quite a bit of groundwork done but had yet to be started under saddle. Over the last year I put so many of her firsts on her. First ever ride, first trail ride, first beach ride, first gaming pattern, first extreme trail ride, first haul out to other arena, first group ride, and so many moments that I can only remember but not quite capture. She loves her naps, she loves her snuggles, she loves to be the boss, she loves trails, she loves to be in the middle of everything, and she loves her people. This girl grew from gangly filly to beautiful young mare. She is one of the roughest rides I’ve been on when she has an opinion but one of the most sure footed horses I’ve ever swung a leg over on trails. She has pushed my buttons and snuggled my sadness. It’s been an honor to have her in my barn and although her family lives super close and I will see her very often, I definitely missed her head popped over the stall tonight when I went to feed. This girl may just stick with me for a long time but I’m very glad to know her family so well and know that I’ll continue to watch her grow and still get to snuggle and ride her often. Go be good for your family Keeks. Love ya!

Meet Quincy! A 6yo mustang gelding that came in over the weekend. He has been rode in the past but he came to Krystle's Quarters for a stronger foundation, to add some buttons, and to make him a nice general riding mount. We already know he trailers well as he came to us from quite a ways away. Thank you to his owners for trusting us with your boy!

Yesterday we had a grooming and ground work session. He got brushed really well, hosed off some winter fuzz, brushed through his beautiful mane and tail (I’m not a fan of braids but his locks are just too perfect to not care for), and then we worked on ground work. He was super responsive to forehand turns yielding his hindquarters almost too much, but he was quite sticky on moving his shoulders so we worked on haunch turns and sidepassing. He also wanted to always be facing me which I’m not opposed to, but at some point I have to be able to walk around him so we worked on standing ground tied while I walked progressively bigger circles around him with his feet staying put. We also worked on crossing the bridge, logs, and the dreaded puddles. These things are not uncommon for horses to dislike, but mustangs can see man made obstacles as non-sense, especially when there is a clear path around them. Why on earth would humans ask these things they say? Partnership, footwork, and following directions to name a few.

What I’ve seen of Quincy so far is a very quiet and tolerant soul with a touch of stubborn. He is very affectionate needing some boundaries but I am looking forward to working with him over the next bit. He’s done well so far! Good boy Quincy!

Meet Miss Shelta. She is a 9YO Gypsy cross mare that just completed her first week with Krystle's Quarters. She is a gem on the ground and already had been started under saddle but needed a little help moving forward to bridge to be a better riding partner. Shelta can get stuck, focusing on what is around her and forgetting her rider. We have been riding with dogs, people, horses, and equipment around to help her learn to redirect back to her handler. She tends to be heavy in the bit so we are working to soften under hands. She has a solid walk, trot, stop, and back. We are working on leg pressure with the beginnings of sidepassing, and we are working on more willing turns with leg assist. We’ve also worked on foot placement with bridges and logs, and we even got a few loping strides! I think this girl will come far fast. She is super smart! Check back to keep an eye on her progress.

Never underestimate the value in a patience post. This basic tool of teaching horses to tie without being trapped until they come to terms on their own to stand and just hang out. A domestic horse will spend a good amount of time in their life standing tied somewhere yet there are many times I hear “my horse won’t tie.” I am so very happy that we have this tool in our arsenal now. Not only does it give an invaluable tool for training, it gives me another spot to tie out horses that have been saddled to be rode for the day. As you can see the patience post is right next to the arena where horses can still see each other and I can keep an eye on them as I ride. We will wrap it and mat around it very soon but yesterday was the first day we got to use it and I was super happy to finally have it.

It was a good day in the arena yesterday. Multiple horses tacked and tied out so I could cycle through them more efficiently (thanks Jen for being my helper for the day!), multiple horses being rode at once while I was giving haul in lessons, and at one point multiple lessons going at the same time. With our new tools and offerings we are growing and I couldn’t be more happy about it!

The spring weather this week made for some pretty awesome backdrops for lessons and ride nights. We had some really good rides, some rides on new horses, and a super sweet mother/daughter lesson. Happy that I get to help so many on their journeys. Off to catch up on errands and reset for the new week. Happy Sunday everyone!

04/04/2024

What has Miss Kiki been up to? She’s been getting rides, getting miles, and keeping our barn sassy and sweet. Today we got to do something different. Today she got her first day of barrel work! Was it perfect, heck no! This girl had literally never even walked a gaming pattern. By the time we were done though she was walking and trotting a decent pattern with pockets, finishing her turns crisp, and looking ahead to the next barrel. I like to keep my horses calm, soft, and engaged with me especially when we create gaming horses so as always we start slow and steady and it showed because when we were done she collected and stopped solid, dropped her head, and did a nice haunch turn to walk off calm and at ease. Good girl Kiki!

On another note, I am so happy with our new arena and what it means we can offer our clients. If you are looking for a tune up, getting your horse patterned, lessons or clinics, just reach out. We look forward to hearing from you!

The last weekend of the month means prep for end of month transfer of horses in/horses out. Occasionally I get a quiet morning to myself after a full week of lessons and training to sit and reflect on how far we’ve come. Saturday morning vibes around here are chill today and I’m super thankful for it before the next round of chaos kicks off.

April training books are full. One possible tune up/patterning spot left for May and June. Open books for July and August for starts, tunes and patterns. Happy Saturday from our barn to yours.

Some weeks I am super proud of my horses, some weeks I’m super proud of my client’s horses. Some weeks I’m super proud of my students and the magical weeks I get to be proud of them all at the same time!

This week let me brag on my students. I only have pictures of a few of them but this was a week of breakthroughs! I had a few folks haul in for lessons and have some amazing rides with some major “ah ha” moments. I had some students that stepped up to the next level of schooling horses and prove to me and themselves that they had earned it and can handle it. I had some that got to trot or lope for the first time, or first time in a long time, and they pushed through the instinct to shut it down and trusted in themselves, the horses, and me to work through the bounces and find a rhythm and shine bright. These are the weeks that my heart is so full watching these students from so many ages, abilities, walks of life and disciplines find those little details that make major improvements and see their joy as they own their wins. I love celebrating those moments with these folks on their journeys!

I also have to give love to the horses that make this possible. To the horses that got hauled in or I went to see that give their riders their hearts to grow with, and for me a big shout out to my four legged partners that give so many students the opportunity to learn and grow in their knowledge and passion of horses, I was so proud of these horses this week. I also had some really good rides on clients’ horses with some marked improvements that I got to share with their owners. Such a cool week! So proud of all my students and their horses 🤩

If you are interested in lessons I do have a very limited amount of spots left on my horses BUT I am looking at opening some Saturday morning haul in only lessons for those of you that want to do a deep dive, one on one lesson on patterns to up your game on those games! Enjoy your week folks, you never know when greatness will grab you!

Let’s talk about Kaycee. Kaycee is a sweetheart of a TB that came in recently. She has some baggage from her previous years but this girl tries so hard. She has been very head high, struggles to relax under saddle, seems to have been a “go fast and never slow” horse and very anxious often responding by going everywhere with no purpose. We are working on learning to relax under saddle, bring the head back down, use her head and body collectively by putting feet/ribs/hips/shoulders in a direction with purpose in placement, and adding back very basics like walking, standing, breathing, existing as a content girl and letting the anxiety go. She has come so far in the two weeks she’s been here!

Our first ride it took 45 minutes to walk, with her head down, on a loose rein. Our latest ride took about 10 and after that most times when we stopped she chose to relax and put her head down and breath deeply without prompting, politely standing for as long as I wanted until I asked her to do the next thing. She had been super responsive to any movement of body often interpreting her rider simply readjusting a leg or hand when just standing with her as a request to move, now she stands while I do whatever antics I want on top of her. She hardly ever would stand still anywhere before, now during a recent ride I knocked a barrel over and she stood politely while I hung off the side of her like a monkey, way down her 16.3 hand height, to reach down and reset the barrel and then clamber back up. She also is doing so well learning to move off her hind end, arc and counter arc, starting back into haunch turns, leg yields, moving forward with collection and just overall learning to trust her rider and work together again. Her current owner has done very well to mitigate her past, and I’m super glad to be trusted to help bridge to Kaycee’s future.

The photos included here were captured during a session last week and she has gotten better since. Top left of each set of photos was the beginning of the ride, top right was the middle of the ride, and the bottom was toward the end of the ride. You can see the progression just in this one session in each set of photos and it is very noticeable. Each ride she just gives me more and more and with patience and giving her the grace to work through her self and come back to me she is blossoming and coming around so well. Good girl Kaycee, I’m so proud of you!
