I get asked occasionally “how do you make such good horses?” Simple answer, you show up. Yes there are a ton of things that go into making a good horse that years and years have taught me so I can teach them but the first step is you have to show up, consistently.
This weekend was a full on storm watch. Rain, thunder, lightning, high winds, all at the same time but you know what, those young minds need guidance so rather than hide inside in my pjs it was full blown layers and to the barn we go. We took this weekend as an opportunity for desensitizing, for continuing to learn that uncomfortable environments can be scary but we will survive and be more confident on the other side. This 2yo filly had some big days with her first loping sessions, first rides in the pasture and on the trail course, first haul out to a show, first big girl ride in the arena at all gaits with no ground work before, a stupid big heron flying out of the pond that she’s pretty sure was going to eat her, flapping tarps and so much more. Did we run for cover and hunker down between storm cells? Yes we sure did, but we showed up, and this baby girl made HUGE strides and progress this weekend and I could not be more proud of her. Less than four weeks ago she had never even been sat on, this weekend she hauled around and storm rode and gave me try and effort and trust and that is what happens when you show up. I am super excited to see this young mind work and see where it will go. I’m soaked, I’m sore, but I’m happy and she’s thriving.
So how do you make good horses? Show up, rain or shine, want to or not, they are worth it and they deserve you to be there. Oh and if you have the gumption to show your soggy butt up in the weather, I bet you’ll find you can make a horse that doesn’t care about water, wind, tarps, flying crud, and a horse that learns to have guts and confidence to pack you through whatever comes your way.
