Spinning Alpaca Fiber into Yarn:

People who spin their own yarn LOVE Alpaca Fiber.
Their fleece does not need to be washed before spinning. Most hand spinners do the carding, spinning and plying first and then wash the finished skein of yarn in tepid water.
The only real preparation is to remove any stray pieces of foliage or dirt before carding.

These are just some of the reasons to use Alpaca Fleece:

- it is Soft and Silky to the touch, with no 'itch factor'

- Lightweight- Hollow core to the fibre means alpaca is light to wear Warm- Hollow core makes alpaca a fantastic insulator

- Durablility. Alpaca yarn less inclined to 'pill' due to long staple length

- it is Washable - alpaca can be handwashed and then dried flat

- the natural colors of Alpaca fiber, range from cream, beige, reds and browns, through to black. If brighter colors are required it absorbs dye incredibly well and the colors are great.

Good to remember when washing hand spun yarn is that alpaca is a natural fibre that does felt if wet.

This is a funny Alpaca Fact...
Alpacas are a domesticated member of the Camel family...
The first large importation of Alpacas to the U.S. happened in 1984. At first, there were a few seen in Zoos and Private Collections. Now, they have become popular with small farms across the country. Their curious friendly personality makes them more of a pet, than livestock....and the babies... There is nothing cuter than a baby Alpaca....

They "are clean and intelligent. They produce fibre that is as fine as cashmere, soft, silky and much warmer and stronger than sheep's wool." . . . and they are super cute.
