As temperatures have begun to drop, please take an extra minute to bang on the hood, honk the horn, walk around and inspect the wheel wells (and even the engine) of your car to make sure no critters are stowing away in an effort to stay warm. The feeling that comes with saving a life, is hard to describe!! 🎊💜😸

Happy Cat Month is an awareness event sponsored by CATalyst Council to educate and inform owners about what they can do to ensure their cat is happy and healthy. Often, cats are viewed as self-reliant, aloof, and less in need of medical care than dogs. This not the case. 83% of cats visit the veterinarian before their 1st birthday, but over 50% don’t return until they become sick or are in pain.

Your veterinarian is trained to detect subtle signs of illness and disease. Catching these signs early is the best way to help your cat live a long, healthy life. Your veterinarian can also advise you on any questions you may have specific to your cat. It is important that your cat visits the veterinary practice yearly for their checkup, and even more often for senior cats.

Cats also need enrichment in the form of attention, exercise and play. After all, in the words of Terry Pratchett, "In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this."

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and this coincides with human medicine’s Pain Awareness Month. Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and can appear as “getting old” or “slowing down.” In particular, cats are very good at hiding pain. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals, including pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage. Please talk to your veterinarian if your companion pet, horse or livestock seems to be experiencing the symptoms of pain.
