Foster Friday!
Sweet Ruby girl is still looking for her forever home! She is such a fun little lady that will make a great addition to any active family. Please see notes from her previous home below.
Dear Wonderful Foster/Adoptive Family,
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for opening your home and hearts to Ruby. In the few short weeks we've had the joy of knowing her, we have fallen completely in love with this special girl. Ruby truly has a spirit all her own. She was rescued from a kill shelter in Houston and brought to Utah by some amazing volunteers who believed she was a Beagle mix. After consulting with a couple of vets, one thinks she might be, but the other doesn’t. As a former Beagle mom (I lost my sweet girl, Penny, just two months ago), I don’t see many Beagle traits in Ruby, except for her beautiful tri-color coat. What we do see in her are the unmistakable qualities of a herding breed.
Let me tell you a little bit about Ruby. She’s a loving and affectionate girl who adores her family. She’s sweet and full of personality. However, her love language is…well, biting! Thankfully, it’s never aggressive, just playful. But, as you can imagine, it can hurt, especially since she’s quite the nibbler. Ruby also has very strong herding instincts. She’ll try to herd her human family by chomping on our ankles, which is just part of who she is. We brought Ruby into our home in hopes she could provide companionship to our dachshund who is still mourning the loss of her sister, Penny the beagle. Unfortunately, Ruby plays rough enough that it has traumatized our dachshund. Peppa is soggy all the time because Ruby can't keep her mouth off of her. Again, it is never aggressive. She just has VERY STRONG herding instincts.
Ruby has such an exuberant personality that she’s always ready for action. She loves to sleep snuggled up next to me at night, but she’s bright-eyed and ready to go at 6 am every morning. She’s full of energy and enthusiasm, and we truly believe Ruby needs a family who can match her lively spirit and give her the time and attention she craves.
We made the difficult decision to find Ruby a new home because, unfortunately, my son with autism struggles with her energy during the day, and our older dog, a dachshund, has been stressed by Ruby’s playfulness. My daughter and I work long hours, which leaves us with little time for the dedicated training and exercise that Ru by deserves. We believe the perfect home for Ruby is one without young children and where she can get plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Ruby would thrive on a farm, doing agility training, or just spending lots of time running or playing at a dog park with her human. She needs a job to keep her mind engaged!
Ruby is incredibly intelligent and very trainable. In fact, I trained her to use a dog door in just one day, and she hasn’t had a potty accident in the house since! She knows sit, shake, and down (as in lie down) and we began work on drop (as in drop it), stay, and off (as in get off of a person or furniture). She’s about a year old, according to Utah Beagle Rescue, and she is up-to-date on all her vaccines. She was also spayed in early October. Ruby has a soft spot for cheese and cream (a guilty pleasure, of course), and she loves playing with balls, running with other dogs at the park, playing tug, and most of all, being loved.
I do want to mention a health scare we had when Ruby got into a bottle of baby aspirin. She ingested 32 tablets, and we spent an entire week taking her to an emergency hospital for care. Thankfully, she received excellent treatment, and we’re thrilled to say that as of November 16, she received a clean bill of health! Her liver and kidney levels are back to normal, and she’s on a short course of medication just to be safe.
We’ll be sending Ruby with her favorite toys and some dog food to get her settled in. She’s been eating Kirkland Signature Salmon and Sweet Potato, and we also supplemented with fresh, refrigerated dog food from Costco.
Ruby is an absolute gem, and we hope you can see the love and potential she has to offer. We know she will thrive in your care, and we are so grateful to you for welcoming her into your life. If you ever feel like sharing updates or sending a photo of Ruby, we’d love to hear how she’s doing.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for giving Ruby the love, care, and adventures she deserves.
P.S. Ruby is almost perfect… almost! She has a curious, adventurous spirit and has been known to chew on shoes, scriptures, curtains, passports, and even shirts. Please be sure to Ruby-proof your home as she’s always looking for her next little adventure!
P.P.S. Don't ask about her missing dew claw. It was like that when we got her!
Through Wasatch Canine Camp Ruby comes with free lifetime boarding, socialization classes, and basic group classes. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines. If you would like to meet Ruby please call or text us at 801-735-1978.
