Dana visited Dr. Sawa for her annual exam to check for changes in her overall health. This beautiful 10 year old Great Dane is in great health, but one thing Dr. Sawa recommended is her yearly dental cleaning to address the mild dental disease she found during her examination.

🦷 Periodontal disease is a term used to describe infection and associated inflammation of the tissues surrounding the tooth. It’s very common and affects two-thirds of dogs over the age of 3. It often begins with gingivitis and if left untreated, the infection can spread deeper into the tooth socket, destroying the bone altogether.

Thankfully, there are many ways we can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup by changing our routine! Daily tooth brushing using a toothpaste specifically formulated for pets is a great start. Dental chews and water additives can also help reduce or delay plaque and tartar build-up. Be sure to ask your veterinarian what products they recommend for your pet.

👩‍⚕️ In this case, Dana received an anesthetized dental cleaning, allowing Dr. Sawa to thoroughly examine her mouth and note the alignment of her teeth and the extent of tartar accumulation both above and below the gum line. Intraoral radiographs assess the viability of the tooth root and surrounding bone. Depending on the affected teeth and severity of dental disease, extractions may be needed and are dependent on the situation. Tooth scaling is then performed using both traditional hand scalers and ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove all remaining traces of tartar. The before and after photos show how important routine cleanings and proper oral health is to the wellbeing of our pets!

Did you know that February is National Pet Dental Health Month?

What is periodontal diseases?
🦷 Inflammation or redness of the gums. As well as build up of tartar and calculus on the teeth.

How do you know if your pet has dental disease?
🦷 You will notice inflamed or red gums, has bad breath, or you notice your pet dropping their food while trying to eat.

What percent of dogs have periodontal disease?
🦷 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have some grade of periodontal disease.

How often should you have your pet's teeth checked?
🦷 At least once a year at the time of their annual exam.

Why are dental x-rays important?
🦷 Sometimes teeth look normal and healthy above the gum line. Dental x-rays help to find disease below the gum line, such as abscesses.

What’s Oravet and how often should you give it to your dog?
🦷 Oravet is a dental chew that combines mechanical and chemical cleaning of your dog's teeth, similar to brushing your teeth. Oravet needs to be given daily to help with bad breath and tartar build up.

How often do you need to brush your pet's teeth?
🦷 Once a day for 5–6 days a week for it to be effective.

How do you brush your pet’s teeth?
🦷 Only on the outer surfaces of the teeth. Each side and front portion need to be brushed for 5–10 seconds for maximum effect.

PAWS is an amazing rescue that takes phenomenal care of their animals. Their directors and volunteers acted quickly and thankfully all of the animals are safe and under observation. We are thankful for the volunteers and our team members that showed up to help! Tonight around 6:30pm a fire broke out in our laundry room. Our volunteers called the Tinley Park fire department, who quickly came out to control the situation. While the fire remained in our laundry room, the smoke took over the rest of our shelter, affecting our animals. Our friends at Midwest answered our call immediately and sent out their veterinarians and staff to take our animals out of the shelter for treatment. Currently over 100 animals are hospitalized at Midwest being monitored for smoke inhalation. 14 cats and 2 dogs are showing signs of respiratory distress.

We are so grateful to Midwest Animal Hospital (it’s nearly midnight and their staff is still there caring for our animals), the Tinley Park Fire department, our volunteers and community who rushed out in our time of need.

If you are looking to help, we will need monetary donations to help pay for our vet bills, a new dryer and repairs.

We will be closed until further notice while our shelter undergoes cleaning and repairs.
