Our Veterinary Social Worker, Taylor, had a lovely experience at Dominican University for their Social Work Practicum and Job Fair, representing Premier Veterinary Group!

One of our MSW Interns accompanied her, and together they engaged with social work students about the field, and the specifics of an in-hospital VSW internship. It was an amazing opportunity to share the invaluable work that our VSW Team provides to the clients, staff, and the surrounding communities of our hospitals.

Meet Tucker, a gentle Great Dane who came to us on with concerning symptoms: bloody nasal discharge, coughing, and increased respiratory effort. After chest radiographs, our team diagnosed aspiration pneumonia. To help him breathe more comfortably, nasal cannulas were placed, and Tucker began his journey to recovery under our care. 💪🐾

Here, our Doctor is expertly placing the nasal cannulas, with Sam, CVT, providing essential assistance and monitoring anesthesia. 💙 We're so proud of our team for their dedication and compassion!

Let’s send Tucker some love as he rests and heals. ❤️🐶

🚨 Did you know that thousands of pets are treated every year for accidental ingestion of rat poison? 🐾 Trixie and Tramp, adorable housemates, recently visited us after eating rat poison. Thankfully, they received prompt care, but this is a critical reminder for pet parents to stay vigilant.

⚠️ Symptoms of rat poison ingestion in dogs and cats can include:
🩸 Lethargy or weakness
🩸 Pale gums
🩸 Difficulty breathing
🩸 Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
🩸 Bleeding from the nose, gums, or other areas
🩸 Bruising or swollen joints
🩸 Seizures or collapse in severe cases

If you suspect your pet has eaten rat poison, seek veterinary care immediately—it can be life-threatening without prompt treatment. 💙

🎄🐾 Holiday Plant Hazards 🐾🎄

Festive favorites like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias can cause digestive upset—or worse—if curious pets take a bite! 🐶🐱 Keep them out of reach to keep your holidays happy.

🌲 Bonus Tip: The water under your Christmas tree might seem tempting to pets, but it could contain harmful fertilizers or bacteria. Cover it up to avoid any risks!

Keep your furry friends safe this season! ❤️✨

As you know, roads can start getting icy this time of year. A common de-icing product known as rock salt is a mixture of sodium chloride that helps reduce ice build-up on roads. ❄️

What you may not know is that rock salt can be extremely dangerous to pets - especially when ingested or licked from paws and fur. Symptoms of salt poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested rock salt, contact us right away! You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

🎄🐾 Kitty Corner: Holiday Safety Tips just for Cats 🐾🎄

The holidays can be exciting, but they can also be overwhelming for our feline friends. Keep your cat happy and safe with these tips:

✨ Stress & Quiet Spaces: Give your kitty a quiet room or cozy hiding spot stocked with favorite toys, blankets, and easy access to food and water.
🚗 Traveling Cats: Secure your cat in a well-ventilated carrier during trips, and try using a calming pheromone spray to ease travel stress.
🐕 Unfamiliar Pets & Visitors: Your cat may not love meeting Aunt Mary’s dog. Create a “safe zone” and use gates to keep introductions low-stress.

Help your cat enjoy the holidays as much as you do! 💕

The risk of hypothermia becomes higher during cold weather. Exposure to cold water or cold air are the most common causes of hypothermia, so it's important to keep pets warm and dry. Protect your furry friends this winter! If you think your pet may be at risk of hypothermia, get them to a veterinarian immediately and take action steps below:

🥶 Remove them from the cold
🥶 Wrap them in warm coats or blankets
🥶 Use your body warmth to increase their body temperature
🥶 If they lose consciousness and are breathing, put them in the recovery position (Read about the recovery position here: https://firstaidforpets.net/recovery-position-and-why-could-it-save-your-dogs-life/)
🥶 If you know pet CPR, respond quickly if they stop breathing

Holiday Food Safety for Pets 🐾

The holidays are full of delicious meals and treats, but not everything on your table is safe for your furry friends. Here’s what to watch out for:

🍖 Turkey & Roast Trimmings
Bones and fatty leftovers can lead to dangerous blockages or pancreatitis. Keep bones, drippings, and greasy foil safely out of reach.

🧅 Stuffing & Gravy
Onions, garlic, and certain herbs are toxic for pets and can cause severe health issues.

🍫 Candy & Chocolate
Sugar-free candies with xylitol and rich chocolates (like truffles) are highly toxic—especially to dogs. Avoid giving any human treats to pets.

🍷 Alcohol
Even a small sip can cause toxicity. Be mindful of unattended festive drinks!

🛑 When in doubt, keep human food away from pets and stick to pet-friendly treats. A little caution can prevent a holiday trip to the vet!

Our Story

We moved to Orland Park in October 2018!

Premier Veterinary Group acquired EVCS in 2012. By summer 2013, we expanded to offer 24-hour emergency 365 days a year. Soon after, we added the specialties of advanced surgery and internal medicine by referral from your family veterinarian. In October 2018, we expanded yet again and moved the hospital to a 12,000 square foot facility in Orland Park. We are a thoughtful, dedicated group of individuals with a profound desire to share our gifts of healing and understanding with companion pets and their families. With the addition of our third practice in Crestwood, Illinois, we now care for pets and handle animal emergencies throughout the Chicagoland area, including the far North suburbs (Grayslake) and the City of Chicago at the corner of Belmont and Pulaski.
