Answer: yes! While our focus is heart health, the heart needs oxygen to pump - so let’s chat a bit about asthma.

We have many patients who come to us with a diagnosis of asthma. Asthma in pets is like asthma in humans. This is inflammation of the airway, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

In dogs, asthma is considered “canine bronchitis,” which is chronic inflammation of the airway. This can be caused by various environmental factors, allergies, or even infections. Likewise, cats with asthma may experience coughing, wheezing, and labored breathing.

If you suspect that your dog or cat is experiencing respiratory issues, make sure to contact your primary veterinarian promptly. Early detection and appropriate management are key!

Cardiovascular health in dogs and cats have MANY similarities with the human heart, yet there are also some differences! We oftentimes get asked, “did my pet have a heart attack?”

In humans, a heart attack typically refers to a sudden blockage of blood flow to part of the heart. In animals, they can have heart-related problems, but the mechanisms and terminology differ. It is extremely rare in the veterinary field to hear of a dog or cat having a heart attack. They rarely get coronary artery disease. Rather, dogs and cats can be diagnosed with other heart issues common in humans, such as heart disease, heart failure and specific conditions like cardiomyopathy.

We perform diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and echocardiograms to assess your pet's heart health and determine an appropriate course of action. Preventive measures, regular check-ups, a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, can help overall well-being and cardiovascular health of your pets.

🐾🚶‍♀️Join us in celebrating National Dog Walking Month! Jazz up the daily routine with a brisk walk outside – and it’s a great New Year’s resolution!

CFVC is excited to talk about the crucial connection between daily walks and cardiovascular health. Just like humans, dogs (and cats) need exercise, too.

Regular walks do more than just keep your dog active—they're essential for their overall health. Walking helps maintain a healthy weight, builds muscle strength, exercises joints, and supports cardiovascular fitness. Walks stimulate blood circulation which in turn improves heart function and can contribute to a stronger cardiovascular system (each case is different please talk to your veterinarian if you feel a change in routine is needed). A healthy heart is a happy heart!

Did you know that daily walks offer mental stimulation for your dog, too? Let them explore the world with their senses, boosting both their physical and mental well-being.

Here's to a month filled with happy hearts!

It’s National Cat Lovers Month! 🐾❤️

We can’t let the month slip by without giving a shout-out to all our CFVC feline family members! There’s no need to purrrr-suade us, we love seeing our kitties! Most of our staff own a cat (or 2 or 3), and we know all cats are unique and pawsitively perfect in their own special way! Whether they're striking a pose, being mischievous, or just enjoying a sweet nap, show us why cats are simply purr-fect!

Comment below, share the post, or tag some of your fellow cat friends and let’s see if we can flood our feed with our beloved cats! Post a photo of your cat with an emoji that describes their name, and we will try to guess the name! Here’s to a meow-tastic holiday season!

Meet Lotus! Lotus’s story highlights the importance of following up with a veterinary cardiologist when any heart irregularities are detected. Lotus’s primary care veterinarian discovered a heart murmur, prompting his dedicated parents to reach out to Dr. Bolfer for a cardiology workup. We were able to provide valuable insights and create a health plan to support his heart health moving forward.

It’s Giving Tuesday! 🎉 What better way to celebrate than by giving back and supporting those who need it most, including our furry friends! This year, our office is participating in two fundraising initiatives to help support Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando! Pet Alliance has two pet adoption shelters around the Orlando area, a low-cost veterinary clinic, and conducts a variety of community outreach programs.

Our fundraisers will be running from today, Tuesday, December 2nd until Thursday, December 19th (until 5pm).

1. Donate a 10-pound (or larger) bag of dog or cat food at our Longwood location. For each 10-pound bag you donate, you’ll get a chance to add your name to the raffle to win a $250 gift basket from Fresh Market! Donations will be accepted until Thursday, December 19th - 5pm.

2. We will also have a Giving Tree in the Longwood office. Choose an ornament that has a donation amount between $5-$50, and we will match your donation!

This holiday season, let’s make tails wag and kitties purr! 🐾 Your donation can make a world of difference for homeless pets, giving them the love and care they deserve. Together, we can turn their “ruff” days into a cozy, belly-filled holiday season!
