There are three species of manatees, the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee, and the West African manatee.
The Amazonian and the West Indian manatees are both considered vulnerable. But thanks to successful conservation, in 2016 the West African manatee was downgraded from endangered to threatened.
The main threat manatees face are human-related issues, including habitat destruction, ship strikes, and getting caught or digesting fishing gear.

There are two types of Elephants, the African, listed as vulnerable, and the Asian, listed as endangered. You can tell the difference between the two types by looking at the size of their ears. African elephants are generally larger and have very large and pronounced ears. The asian elephants are smaller and also have noticeably smaller ears.
The biggest threat to both populations is being poached for their ivory tusks, meat, and hides. Other threats include habitat loss and conflicts with the locals.

The largest threat the polar bear is facing is habitat loss. Caused by climate change, the polar bear is now classified as a vulnerable species. Other issues they are facing include pollution from toxic contaminants and the exploration and development for oil and gas.

Due to habitat loss from logging, forest fires, human development, and palm oil plantations; both orangutan species, Sumatran and Bornean are considered critically endangered. They are also being killed for a variety of different reasons including, exotic meat trade, traditional medicines, or to steal and sell the babies as pets. Conservation work is in place to try and work with the palm oil industry to try and improve sustainability as well as encourage the conservation of the species and its habitat.

There are five different types of rhinos still living today. Each of which is endangered due to humans poaching them for their horns.
On the black market, rhino horns are worth as much as gold and are sold for a various reasons. Some people believe the horns have therapeutic and aphrodisiac properties and grind the them to dust for consumption. Others use them as handles on their daggers.
Conservation efforts for these animals are proving to be successful in increasing their numbers. But until we can stop poaching these animals will always be in danger.

Native to Brazil, the beautiful Spix's Macaw is currently a critically endangered species and since 2000 the species has been considered extinct in the wild.
As of 2015, there were only 110 Spix's Macaws in captivity and with the increased deforestation, introduction of invasive species, and climate change these birds may never return home.

2016 was an interesting year to say the least, but let's try to reflect on the good that did occur. My Top Nine Good Things of 2016: - I have just completed my first year of freelancing full time. - My landlord decided to not sell the house that I'm renting. - Having a shirt design sold at Creative South. - That Rogue One movie was pretty awesome. - Learned how to start animating my work. - Participating in a Panel discussion on Design Recharge. - I pet a whole lot of cats this year. - Hurricane Matthew spared us and our home. - I'm still healthy & happy.
