If you, or someone you know, is looking for a new furever companion please consider adopting. Many of these dogs get overlooked and end up spending "too long" in a kennel environment. Fostering is another great way to help the dogs in need of a family, to learn the in's and outs of living in a home environment. This gives them physical and mental stimulation. Too often, the nicest most loving pets, become stressed, and develop behavioral issues from being kenneled for far too long.
Please share these babies' stories and help them find a loving home.
Animal shelters throughout Central Florida have been at or above capacity with dogs for quite some time, unable to catch a break.
The simple reason is because the number of dogs coming in exceeds the number of dogs being placed. Letโs take a look at today, for example. In the five hours our shelter has been open, weโve accepted 35 dogs. And placed seven. Right now, we have 223 dogs in care.
The puppy pictured here is one of a litter of 10 that arrived today. An Orlando resident told us they have found these puppies in the days following , with no idea where they came from or who owned them. We likely wonโt ever know their true background. What we do know is they have demodex mange, a parasitic mite (not contagious to other animals or people) that causes hair loss and skin damage. Itโs thankfully an easily treatable condition, but we need for these puppies to be placed quickly as keeping them in the shelter environment, with its inherent stress and exposure to various germs, is less than ideal for their weakened immune systems.
We have four dogs on the way to the shelter, being brought in by various Animal Services Officers. One pair of dogs, 8-month-old puppies, were left behind in an eviction from an apartment complex near UCF. The other pair are reportedly owned by a person living in their car that had an accident requiring the owner to be hospitalized.
Once they arrive, theyโll join the dozen or so dogs temporarily housed on our carport, waiting for a kennel space to open up.
We share all this in an effort to be transparent about the challenges these pets are experiencing. We need help from our community in these specific ways:
๐ฃ Adopt โ Fees are reduced to $31 for the remainder of the month. All available pets, including this puppy, are listed on our website here: https://ocnetpets.com/Adopt/AnimalsinShelter.aspx. Visit the shelter to adopt or to initiate a โsleepover,โ which is a trial adoption period.
๐ Foster โ We repeatedly call out the need for foster homes, especially for large dogs. Caring for a shelter dog for even a few days can make a significant difference. We provide all food and any necessary vetting. Find out more here: https://ocnetpets.com/GetInvolved/FosterCare.aspx
๐ต Be a Good Owner โ Most of the pets in our care are unfortunately here because of the failure of a person. We implore our pet owners to step up, to provide adequate care for their pets and to appropriate tag and microchip them so if lost we can reunite these families. We also recommend having backup caretakers identified in the event of an emergency.
