Building the future of Kitten Season! 🛠️

As we wrap up this month-long Kitten Con celebration of all things tiny, fluffy, and hungry, we'd like to give you an update about our new Orlando shelter location! Recently, concrete foundation was poured for the building, outlining the location of shelter features that will revolutionize our ability to care for thousands of kittens in the years to come.

Additional space for incoming fosters and our state-of-the-art shelter medical area with advanced isolation wards will bolster our ability to take on and treat those common kitten ailments like upper respiratory infections and ringworm. Plus, beautifully designed kennels and free-roam rooms for our cats and kittens ready for adoption will allow for their optimum comfort and an enhanced guest experience while visiting with potential new family members. We can't wait to see this purr-fection in action!

While we dream about all that we'll be able to accomplish in this special building, we still need your support caring for this summer's brood of litters! Find out how you can get involved at https://f.mtr.cool/nlpflhqfws

On this final week of Kitten Con, Spring has arrived and more litters are starting to tap on our door! 🌸

Meet Jewel, an adorably unique tabby with some funky feet!

Jewel's bowed limbs were deemed to be congenital, but they don't seem to cause her any problems or pain. She spent a few weeks in foster care with her siblings before finding her permanent home last Friday through our Downtown Orlando cat shelter!

A moment for the mamas - Because behind every litter is a mother's story!

While many of our kittens come to us orphaned, found alone, or after their moms have finished raising them, we still see our fair share of family units during the busiest months of Kitten Season.

We are proud to provide outstanding care not only for our youngest residents, but for their resilient mamas as well!

In early February, 2-year-old Kit Kat and her two fluffy 4-week-old kittens came through our doors. The youngsters were healthy and well-fed, but skinny Kit Kat was struggling with a completely immobile left hind leg and a weakened right hind leg.

Despite the state in which she was found, she had done an incredible job of nursing and socializing her kittens. Staff immediately connected with her curious and playful personality!

After a warm bath and thorough assessment by our veterinary team, Kit Kat's condition was deemed neurologic, with amputation of the unusable limb determined to be the best course of action to help her long-term mobility.

After her surgery and a brief stint in foster care for the family, Kit Kat has recovered wonderfully! She has gained weight and so much strength in her remaining back leg. Plus, her sunny personality continues to shine brighter every day!

With her kittens now off to their new homes, Kit Kat made her own debut to the adoptions lobby at our Downtown Orlando shelter this week!

Oh no!

✅ Missing fur
✅ A mysterious patch on the skin

Must be ringworm!

Since Kitten Season coincides with some of our warmest, wettest months, this condition also thrives this time of year. Despite its scary and misleading name, this rash-like fungal infection has nothing to do with parasites and is fairly easy to remedy. Affected animals are placed in a foster home where they can be isolated from other pets and are given special baths in a yellow-tinted lime sulfur dip over the course of multiple weeks.

Though it may not look glamorous, these "lime dips" are incredibly effective in making the pesky ringworm nothing more than a distant memory!

We provide the supplies and medical care, you provide the love! 🛍️🍼🐱

Many people ask about the financial obligations of fostering during Kitten Season. While some of our foster volunteers choose to purchase their own items, we are able to send you home with any food, formula, litter, toys, or supplies needed for a litter in your care!

If you’re unable to foster, but still want to support our cute and cuddly efforts, please consider donating a needed item from our Wish List! These important gifts keep our foster program running smoothly and allow us to take in more kittens in need.

Must be sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies!

Scabies definitely has some of the more dramatic visuals when it comes to common ailments we see during Kitten Season, but it is very easily treated with two doses of parasite prevention given two weeks apart.

Gumdrop was found with a case so severe she struggled to open her eyes, but just a few weeks later she looked like a brand new cat and has now found her permanent home!

Colorful, colorful kittens! Have you ever wondered why there is such diversity in the gorgeous litters at our shelter?

The answer is ✨science✨

The hue of a cat's fur is controlled by genes on the X chromosome, with each X only able to express one color. These colors are black and red, but may dilute into other familiar shades like orange, brown, and grey.

🐱 Since females have two X chromosomes, that means they have more real estate for color and overwhelmingly make up the population of calico and tortoiseshell cats. For a male to don an orange and black coat, he would have to be born with an extra X chromosome.

🐱 Did you know around 80% of orange cats are male? This is because a female cat requires the orange gene to be represented on both of her X chromosomes, while a male only requires the trait on his singular one. It's just probability!

🐱 It's possible that a litter of kittens might not all have the same father. That's one of the reasons that some kitty siblings may not look anything alike!

🐱 But what about cats that have white spots, or the iconic tuxedo look? The addition of white into a cat's coat is linked to an entirely separate gene and not related to coloration. Whoa!

Got all that? There will be a quiz next week on the material.... Just kittin' you!

Since 2018, Pet Alliance has spayed/neutered almost 20,000 community cats! 🐈

These efforts are decreasing the number of kittens born in the great outdoors, thus paving the way for less strain on our local shelters during Kitten Season.

Oh no!

✅ Sneezing
✅ Stuffy nose
✅ Goopy eyes

Must be a kitty cold, also known as an upper respiratory infection!

Just like a human child might easily contract a bug while out in the world, young kittens' developing immune systems make them prime targets for germs.

2-month-old Bakso came to us facing this common medical issue, but is feeling much better after spending a few weeks in foster care receiving treatment and lots of love. Today, Bakso is now ready to roar into a permanent home! 🐯

They're about to take over our shelters for the whole summer, so why not let them take over our internet footprint for a whole month? 😻

This March, we're launching Kitten Con, an educational celebration to help our organization and community get ready for Kitten Season!

Each year as the weather warms, thousands of kittens are born outside to community cats. If unprepared, Pet Alliance can be easily overwhelmed with dozens of little ones brought to our doors each day. It takes a true village to ensure a successful Kitten Season and we need your assistance to ensure these resilient babies thrive!

Want to help us get a jump start on supplies? Interested in giving some of these guys a temporary home by fostering? Visit the Kitten Con hub on our website to learn more about getting involved: https://s.mtrbio.com/xekcirkehm

A little guy with a big job! 🐶💙

6-month-old Oleander was adopted by the Canine Companions Southeast Training Center, where he will soon be working alongside aspiring service dogs! This outgoing kitten will provide valuable socialization for the puppies as they learn to perform their tasks in dynamic environments.

Oleander, now named Ollivander, is currently acclimating to his new home and slowly meeting a lot of furry and human friends. We're so proud of this special cat and can't wait to hear about his adventures with Canine Companions!

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's BANDIT! 🦸

Bandit's eye spots make her look soooo cool and mysterious, you'd never guess that her true identity is simply a goofy 3-year-old medium-sized shelter dog looking for a fresh start.

Hailing from the Florida panhandle, Bandit recently came to us as a transfer from Gadsden County Animal Services with heartworm disease. Now that we've begun the treatment to help her battle said evil foe, we're hoping to connect this super gal with a new sidekick!

Bandit will need to come back and visit us a few times over the course of the coming months to ensure the heartworm butts are kicked. Never fear, as with all heartworm positive dogs adopted from Pet Alliance, treatment services are included with adoption!

Ready to be the hero in Bandit's story? Come visit her at our Sanford shelter (2800 County Home Rd) today!
