The latest stats on missing pets are eye-opening! Nearly 10 million pets go missing each year in the U.S., with dogs being more likely to be found. Amazingly, 30% of outdoor cats living in a new home try to find their old homes, which leads to them going missing.

But microchipping can make a huge difference. 🌟 Almost 52% of lost dogs with microchips are reunited with their owners, compared to only 22% without. And we always recommend keeping your cats indoors when possible.

Here's how you can keep your pet safer! Ensure they are microchipped and registered, and that your contact info is up-to-date. Always have a visible ID tag with your current details!

In this touching story by Becki Howell in the Guardian, after the heartbreaking loss of her French bulldog Yoda, her family visited a breeder with hopes of finding a new puppy. Instead, they were drawn to Lilly, a three-year-old dog with a well-formed personality who seemed to instinctively connect with the grieving family, especially her father.

Despite initially planning to get a puppy, the family was thrilled when the breeder offered Lilly to them. Lilly quickly became a cherished member of the family, bringing joy and comfort through various life changes and events over the next eight and a half years. Though Lilly passed away in June, the family remains deeply grateful for the love and companionship she provided.

Becki writes, "I’ll always feel as if I’m walking with Lilly by my side, hearing her deafening snores or feeling her lead in my hand."

If you follow our page, you likely agree that "Pets are family." A recent NPR article by Lola Murti highlights pet owners' financial struggles in today’s economy. Despite inflation, many continue to invest heavily in their pets. For instance, Thomas Guzowski and Eloísa López relocated to save on living costs but are dedicated to providing high-quality care for their aging dogs, Mali and Yaretzi. This sentiment is echoed by many pet owners who, according to the Pew Research Center, are willing to make personal sacrifices for their pets' well-being.

Pet care costs have risen sharply, with a 25.8% increase in pet products and services over the past five years. Despite this, pet owners are projected to spend over $150 billion this year due to their strong emotional bond with their pets. However, these rising expenses have led some families to consider surrendering their pets due to financial constraints. While some struggle with the cost, others, like Lisa Wilkerson-Willis, remain committed to their pets' care, underscoring their integral role in family life.

🐾 At the Sampson Fund for Veterinary Care, we're honored to have been there for Smore and Susan during their journey together. Six years ago, Susan brought her late sister's cat Smore from Arizona to Harwich, helping her to navigate a new home with her already existing cat, Meggie. Recently, Smore faced a health challenge, requiring urgent oral surgery. Thanks to the support of The Brewster Veterinary Hospital & our assistance, Smore received the care she needed to recover well.

Susan says, "Receiving help with the veterinary expenses was so wonderful. I am very grateful. My children don’t live nearby so it’s just the three of us. Smore is the best... she’s as sweet as a s’more!”
