Rawhide chews may seem like a fun treat, but they can pose serious risks to your dog’s health!

On top of the chemical concerns, rawhide is a major choking hazard and can cause serious intestinal blockages. When wet, the chews become slippery, making it difficult to grab if your dog starts choking. These risks are sadly more common than many people realize.

For your dog’s safety, it’s best to avoid rawhide entirely. Instead, try healthier, natural options like bully sticks, yak chews, or vet-approved dental treats. For dogs that love to chew, durable toys made from rubber or nylon are great alternatives. And while these options are safer, no chew is completely risk-free, so always supervise your dog while they enjoy their treats.

Happy Halloween 👻!

Here are some tips to ensure a fun and spooky night for everyone! 🎃🐾

🔸 Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can be toxic to pets, as can candy containing xylitol, a sugar substitute. Ensure all candy is kept in secure, pet-proof containers.

🔸If you dress your pet in a costume, make sure it's comfortable, doesn't restrict movement, vision, or breathing, and doesn't have small, easily swallowed parts. If your pet shows discomfort, remove the costume.

🔸Frequent doorbell rings from trick-or-treaters can stress pets. Consider keeping them in a quiet room away from the commotion or play calming music to soothe them.

PSA about solar covers for your pool

With the weather getting somewhat chillier, you might be getting ready to put a cover on your pool. Although this seems like common sense that a dog who is aware that there is a pool in your yard will stay away despite the cover, it’s really not at all. To the dog, it looks like they would be capable of walking in the spot where the pool once was, and if you are not outside and your dog attempts to walk on it and the cover caves in and your dog gets stuck underneath it, there is just no way for the dog to get out, especially when it is panicking.

Proof-
I had a clear cover on my pool for a couple of years and then we randomly switched to a blue cover and one of my dogs who has been living in my house for five years tried to run across it- luckily I was outside.

Yesterday at social, 4 dogs who have been coming to social and are fully aware that we have a pool and have been in it over 20 times all tried to walk over it. One ran so quickly she was able to make it to the other side!

Needless to say we will never have the cover on the pool during social again.

Please— be aware that what’s common sense for us it’s not common sense for your dog so if you’ve never had a cover on your pool before and you decide to get one, please understand that your dog can get stuck underneath it.

Luckily we NEVER EVER leave these dogs alone during social.

If you must evacuate today — take your pets with you ! Most hotels are allowing & here’s local shelters :

Pet friendly shelters:
Pets will be accepted at Deland High School, Mainland High School, and Volusia County Fairground shelters, however, owners must bring a few days' worth of pet food and prescription pet meds, food bowls and water bowls, leashes and collars for each pet, Pet ID tags filled out with contact information, drinking water, potty pads or cat litter, crates, and copies of pet medical records.

Transportation to shelters
Votran and Volusia County Schools will provide free transportation to public shelters. All Votran bus stops are evacuation assembly points during an evacuation order. Bus space is limited. Evacuees should take only essential items, such as personal identification, food, bedding, clothing, and medications. Carry-on items are limited to a pillow, blanket, and one carry-on bag (not larger than 22” x 16” x 8”). Residents can also bring a folding chair (i.e. lounge chair to sit or sleep on).

Volusia County will continue coordinating with state officials and the National Weather Service to assess potential local impacts from the storm. Residents can stay updated by downloading the Volusia Emergency Management app, following the County’s social media channels, or visiting www.volusia.org
