Here, we were working on basic leash manners when I asked Kim to walk Kali past me to go home. The problem was Kali was tired and kept pulling her mom toward me (the high value distraction). After we tried a few turn- arounds, which didn't successfully correct the pulling behavior, I told her to try luring... and hotdamn she did amazing!

What is neutrality? It is the ability to calmly exist in an environment, and it is the single greatest gift we can give to our dogs.
When working on leash manners, most folks skip over this basic foundation and go straight to the walking. Before your dog can walk nicely on a leash, they need to know how to be calm and focused regardless of the environment.

The team went out to @edgewateranimalshelter to capture some video of the dogs playing with the @calmrdogtoys and the settle strap.
I got to work with Renee, and she is such a pretty girl.... she deserves a home of her own. Renee is super shy, but once we got the settle strap on her she became more confident and wanted some affection. And, the staff here at the shelter said this sweet pup loves to play, play, play!

One way to build relationship and trust with your dogs is to learn how to read and honor their many attempts at letting you know their wants and needs, by harming their body language. this is the same concept of teaching your children consent. Hear me out:
Does your dog kiss you? Of course the do! Valentine loves to give kisses, and Jones and Teddy offer kisses am the time (usually when they want something... jerks), but not all kisses are the same. And to avoid stressing your pup we should honor the boundaries they set.... sort of like giving your kids the right to say no to unwanted affection, etc.
Here is how this video happened:
We were laying down for bed tonight when I thought I would get some harmless video of Valentine, one of my personal dogs.
You can see the tongue flicks at the beginning of the video, followed by furrowed brows and agitated eyes... then the real signal that she wants to be left alone.... it looks like she gives the camera a "kiss".
Why am I so adamant this was not a kiss of affection? Context, body tension, eye focus, and the quick flip of the tongue does not make contact with me or the camera.
All of these are signs of a behavior that we call a "Kiss to dismiss", which is a dog's polite way of saying GTFO out my face. You're making me uncomfortable and scausing me stress.

Videos of dogs reacting violently, explosively, and dangerously get so much attention, but rarely do we as viewers consider the effects of those videos. These reels add fuel to the fire of the stigma of owning a reactive dog. Not to mention the damage being done to that dog and guardian by putting them in a situation where they are likely to fail just to get a video for our own promotion.
These click-bait videos too often are embarrassing for the guardians and exploit dogs who are under stress and struggling. I'm here to help your dog heal. I'm here to support you while we work together. So here I am telling you that I won't do that to you or your dog. I am a safe space, and I understand that reactivity can be scary and frustrating. I'll not only help your dog heal, but I'm here to help you learn how to heal the guilt and shame associated with having a reactive dog. I'm here to ward off those people in your neighborhood who make sh*tty comments or offer insane training advice while you're still learning.

So often, we get caught up in comparing ourselves and our dogs with others on social media that we forget about the bias... most people only show a highlight reel on socials. The best shot, per se. So, here I am, being vulnerable, silly, and imperfect. And I'll keep being that way, in every area of life.
I think one of the reasons my clients choose me is because I'm honestly me, all the time. Authenticity is one of my values, and it's one for my clients, too. So yeah, we aren't perfect, but we're perfectly us.
