Unleashed Training

Unleashed Training We ❤️ reactive dogs! Unleashed Training is the authority on resolving reactivity. Check out our free training page! www.unleashedtraining.org Cheers! Jessica

We empower women to heal their dog's reactivity using ethical, fun, and effective methods supported by science. I have never been more than a few feet from a dog, if I had anything to say about it anyway (as I type there are three are at my feet). I was born into a family with a dog, I grew up with many more; dogs were my playmates, confidants, protectors, and friends. My love for animals quickly

evolved to include dolphins and science, then animal communication... but all along there were dogs and our connection to them.

Hi, I am Dr. Jessica Owens, owner of and lead behaviorist at Unleashed Training. While my parents taught me to train the family dogs, I received formal training in animal behavior from Mount Union College, Sea World, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the University of Tennessee, where I earned my Ph.D. While pursuing my research and serving as a Professor of Psychology for the past 15 years I have been committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and training of Bully Breeds. You will see the many pictures of my own dogs on the website, each one a rescue. Now I look forward to bringing this passion to work for others. Here at Unleashed Training we recognize that a happy and healthy family includes all of it's members. Unleashed Training aims to maximize the health and happiness of your 4-legged family members - whether cats, dogs, or ferrets. We offer breed education, help in selecting a puppy, basic obedience training, and behavior modification for aggression, anxiety, etc. And we only used methods backed by science. You do not need to live in Volusia County, Florida to have access to a world class behaviorist. We can meet in-person, virtually, or via our trainer in residence program. Whatever your needs we are here to help with personalized service. I look forward to working with you and your family.

Our first day back from a long and very needed vacation. So excited to start the new year by helping people and their pups live their best lives!!

2025 is a big year for us.

For so many folks we know that it's our own s**t, our Itty bitty s**tty committee, that gets in the way of us being able to make big changes in our lives. This includes training our dogs. So this year I'm adding life coaching to my services. Let's finally kick those old habits and learn how to show up for ourselves, each other, and our dog!

Want to learn about dog communication?

I'll be at Good Times Dog Bar today (1/4/25) from 1pm to 2:30. This is a great place to kick back, have a beverage, and watch dogs behave. I'm holding a session here today to help some clients of mine really dig into dog communication.

I'm extending this invite to all of my clients to come out and join in my live analysis of dog behavior. Come learn, have a beer, and connect with a community of people just like you.

Flagler Humane Society Inc. Will be on site with some of their adoptable dogs joining in the play groups.

Yes!!!

Crowds, children, loud music, new environments, other dogs, etc. are all potentially part of a holiday gathering with family and friends. This can understandably be overwhelming and stressful for many dogs.

It’s absolutely ok for your dog to not be present at these holiday gatherings, whether that means to leave your dog at home (if they don’t have separation related issues) while you attend the gathering, or provide your dog with a safe room they can get a little peace and quiet in.

If you were considering taking your dog to a gathering with friends and family and you’re not sure if your dog would be comfortable there, consider calling the host to find out the number of people who will be there, whether there are any other dogs there, as well as anything else you think your dog might be overwhelmed by, so that you can have a plan!

If the gathering is at yours, consider having a space for your dog, like a comfy room, where guests know that your dog is not to be disturbed when they are in there and your dog can choose to have a rest in there with their bed(s) and toys, etc.

And if you have guests who are really keen on interacting with your dog when your dog isn’t feeling so keen on that, you could consider asking them to help with filling up a snuffle mat or snuffle toy to give to your dog!

It does not make our dogs less like family to not be present at holiday gatherings with family and friends and your dog who finds these gatherings overwhelming will certainly not feel like they’re “missing out”.

It just means our dogs get to enjoy their holiday season in the way they’d prefer to!

Had a client who needed help creating distractions while working on stay. Say no more! Here is a fun video

No prep, raw footage of each of my dogs doing stay with distractions. I use a food drop escalating in temptation as a distraction. You'll notice how I adjust my approach for each dog's personality and ability.

no prep, just raw footage of each of my dogs doing stay with food drop distraction. All done at low distance simply because my house is small and i cant fit ...

The past few weeks have been a truly beautiful way to round off 2024. I say all the time that relationship is the foundation for all the work I do with dogs. And it's the same with the human end of the leash.

In the past week I've had several families graduate from training programs that are living dramatically improved lives compared to when we started. And, I've also welcomed back some familiar faces to rebuild their confidence or learn something new. I am honored that these people, and their dogs, trust me to help them. They allow me to guide them through some truly intense situations. And I want to thank them. For the rest of the month I'll post tributes to some of these folks. Let's start with the infamous giraffe!

This is Daxx, and I've been honored to be his trainer/girlfriend for the past 18 months of his life. He hit a big milestone today - Everyone send big cheers to our boy who successfully walked past and beside a dog for the first time.

Daxx is a happy-go-lucky goofball who doesn't know how size, neither physically nor emotionally. When he gets excited he let's you know by barking and leaping into the air - which scares a lot of other dogs. As he grows into his body he's also learning how to manage his emotions. And I think we can all appreciate how hard that is even for us humans.

Super proud of this guy, and his parents, for doing the work to get to this milestone. Keep practicing!

Say Hi to Chester and Bob. These boys are snowbirds, and they just landed for their second winter working with me.

Chester is the young guy, and he's a STUNNER! 😍 But, he also had the horrible trauma of being attacked by his father, and another intact male later in life. While he has bonded with Bob, he can be reactive to other dogs. This year we've decided to muzzle train Chester and we're looking forward to ordering a stylish custom muzzle from our favorite company, Big Snoof Dog Gear !
