Even after 20 years it doesn’t get easier to run a business. Yeah, I’ve got some things figured out but the world in constantly changing. I still stress about money, I still worry if new clients will want to buy our services, how to stay relevant in a very saturated market and all this social media stuff just confuses me… I still get burned out & overwhelmed but then something like this happens and I remember why I started this business in the first place.

A Lifeline Extended: My Experience with 1 Veteran Foundation

From the moment I reached out to 1 Veteran Foundation, I knew I was embarking on a transformative journey, not just for myself but for my loyal companion, Moose. As a U.S. Navy Veteran, my service on the John C. Stennis carved a path of resilience but also left me navigating the complexities of PTSD. This foundation didn't just see me as another veteran; they saw the individual struggles and the potential for healing through the bond between a man and his dog.

Training Moose was not just about obedience or skills. It was about creating a bridge between my world and the one I served to protect. Moose, with his keen sense of empathy and alertness, was already a great support. However, 1 Veteran Foundation's program transformed him into a lifeline that extended beyond the comforts of home into the world I felt alienated from.

Their approach is deeply personal, acknowledging the unique story of each veteran. They recognized the constant vigilance and anxiety I lived with, the nightmares, and the struggle to find a place in civilian life where my skills seemed out of sync with the world's pace. Yet, they also saw the potential for healing in Moose's attentive gaze and his intuitive presence.

Thanks to 1 Veteran Foundation, Moose can now accompany me beyond our walks, offering support in situations that once seemed insurmountable. Crowds, movies, and gatherings are no longer off-limits but are experiences we can navigate together. This foundation didn't just train Moose; they unlocked a door to the world for me, showing that the path to healing is sometimes walked on four legs, not two.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for the impact 1 Veteran Foundation has made on my life and Moose's. They've not only provided us with tools and training but have gifted us a renewed sense of freedom and companionship. To anyone considering their services, know that you're not just getting a service; you're gaining a family that understands, supports, and walks the journey with you.

Something to keep in mind… There’s no difference when training obedience vs training something “fun”. It’s all the same to the dog. Name this task, do this task & get rewarded. We tend to be more strict & serious when teaching obedience but more fun and forgiving when teaching something like running through a tunnel or doing a silly trick. I think it’s important to approach obedience training the same way you would teach something for fun. Relax, keep it light and enjoy working with your pup.

Wowsers it was cold today!!! I figured I’d post a photo from warmer times. I already miss blooming flowers. Is it to early for spring fever?

Early in my career I had my first business/ networking meeting at a coffee shop. I wanted to look cool in front of these people but I didn’t drink coffee. So I text a coffee drinking friend “Hey, I’m about to meet with these people and I have no idea what to order. Tell me what to get so I don’t look like it’s my first day as an adult drinking coffee”. The response came back “Java chip frappuccino”. I thought to myself “yeah, that sounds cool. I’ll look and sound professional ordering my complicated coffee drink”. At the time I was in my early 20’s, clean shaven, polo shirts and I was insecure about my age. There wasn’t nearly as many dog trainers around as there is today but the ones that were had been training dogs as long or longer than I’ve been alive. I had something to prove. I’ve been working hard, studying hard and I wanted to be taken seriously… And then my drink came out… Java chip frappuccino… I still laugh about that moment. It was a humbling experience. These guys had their adult looking drinks and here I stood with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles… Nobody said anything about my drink. I doubt anyone even cared or noticed. I’ve grown a lot as a person since then but I’ll always remember what it felt like to be starting out in this business. Some colleagues will attempt to discourage you, some will support you but your biggest criticism and your best support is going to come from you so get your mind right. Stay focused, stay strong and keep moving forward. I started Sublime Canine in 2004 and I had a lot of java chip frappuccinos along the way. ✌️
