Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.

✨🐈 Dr. Paul Dent 🐈‍⬛✨ is our spotlight Veterinarian this week!
Dr. Paul Dent grew up on a dairy and crop farm in Southern Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois Veterinary School in 1983 after obtaining a Masters Degree in reproduction physiology in Dairy Science. He moved to California, and initially began practicing as a large animal veterinarian, specializing in horses and dairy cattle. His veterinary passions soon led him to Buck Animal Hospital here in Oroville, CA in 1988 - where he worked with small animals with Dr. Buck for many years. After Dr. Buck’s retirement, Dr. Dent took over the practice and renamed the hospital Dent Animal Hospital. After selling his practice, Dr. Dent and his team joined the Butte Oroville Veterinary Hospital and has been here ever since.

Dr. Dent enjoys various outdoor activities: scuba diving, bass fishing, racquetball, softball, water/snow skiing, camping and restoring land cruisers. In his spare time he also loves spending time with his 3 grandchildren. Dr. Dent is known as the “cat-guy” in our hospital and has 3 cats of his own: Spatz🐈, Joey🐈‍⬛, and Missy🐈 and his beloved dog Waylon🐕‍🦺.

Dr. Dent says “The best part of veterinary medicine is seeing familiar, long-term clients and patients with whom I have developed a trusting and friendly relationship” and he likes to maintain that “small town” bond with his patients and looks forward to meeting you and sharing his 40+ years of experience.

We are so grateful to have Dr. Dent with us and are happy he has been serving the pets of Oroville and the surrounding area for many years!👨🏼‍⚕️❤️
