Update on respiratory illness and your pet…

There is a growing concern over an atypical canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) affecting dogs across the nation. Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab encourages dog owners to remain vigilant regarding their pets health.

As of December 1st, 2023 the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and MSU diagnostic lab have not received any reports of CIRD in Michigan. The illness is contagious, spreading among dogs that have contact with other dogs. If you notice respiratory symptoms (such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge) it’s important to reach out to us to schedule an exam.

To keep your pet safe, make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccines before interacting with other dogs. Avoid sharing, food, water bowls, and toys used by multiple unknown dogs and keep your dogs away from dogs that are sick or who’s vaccine status is unknown.

Today Dr. Baylis went to Clarkston High School to discuss careers in Veterinary Medicine. We had lots of fun answering the students’ questions and meeting everyone. One of our technicians, Logan, brought along her golden retriever to interact with the students. Kobe accidentally stole the show! 🐾

Happy Howlidays! 🐶🎄

The staff is very excited for the upcoming holidays and wanted to share some safety tips regarding your furry family members this season.

Plants: Artificial and live plants can be dangerous to dogs and cats. Live plants can be toxic and artificial plants can cause bowel obstructions if ingested. Keep all plants live or fake in a safe place out of your pets reach. (Yes, this includes your water basin for real trees!)

Food and Drinks: While those sad eyes are so tempting to throw a treat to, be aware of the risks associated with certain foods. Foods like pork that are high in fat can cause conditions like pancreatitis. Many of the holiday treats contain fruit, chocolate, or nuts that may be toxic to your pet. If you have a counter surfer be sure to store your food for the party in a safe place!

Decorations: Keep electrical cords away from your pets! Cats and dogs are very susceptible to chewing on electrical cords which is not only a hazard to them, but your safety as well. They can be taped down to keep them less intriguing. Keep glass ornaments and decorations high on the tree or out of reach. And be aware if you like to light candles that you blow them out and don’t leave them unsupervised.
