Fixing the retrieve for Achilles is probably the one training adjustment I’m most proud of. Our first 3 years in IPO/IGP were not filled with the best training we could do.
I was originally just going to take a picture of one of each from old era and new era, but I felt it wouldn’t capture just how consistently bad our first go at the retrieve was vs how it’s going right now.
Of course the dumbbell doesn’t tell all of the story or let you hear and see how performed. But it should give you a good enough idea of the difference.

Working through struggles on a harness with Blue! She has a problem, sometimes overcoming post type pressure on a harness. She feels the resistance that she can’t move and gives up instead of driving forward. In this video, I am allowing the leash to drag through my fingers, and slowly pinching to create the highest level of resistance at peak moments of effort. If she remains driving forward with good effort, I then release that resistance to allow her to reach reinforcement. And shouldn’t take too many sessions of this for her to catch on and start really driving those legs. Great job, Blue and Katie!

Utilizing your marker to capture choices you want in your training can be done for many things, including taking rewards nicer. You may need to spend significant time on it to have a bigger impact and you may need to maintenance sessions to keep the skill sharpened, but you can improve it. Here’s how I like to work on it with my dogs.
