The Dogwood Animal Shelter has been providing a safe haven for displaced cats and dogs in the Lake Area for over thirty years. The shelter is solely supported by proceeds from the Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Shop and by the generous donations from individuals and businesses.

As we say good-bye to 2024 and welcome 2025, we are reflecting on the blessings we have received this year.
Adoptions are up and the number of community spay/neuters performed this year has increased significantly from last year.
Several long-term dogs have found their furever homes - such as Ray, Trinette, Lightening, Chip, Gabby and Tart.
We were able to be part of two young men’s Eagle Scout projects – projects benefiting the rescues that are still here, as well as those who have new homes.
Several local businesses have donated their time and materials with volunteer projects to help the Shelter and Thrift Store, at what seemed like perfect timing all the way around.
We have the best staff - who day in, day out – 7 days a week, 365 days of the year - ensure that the animals in our care are provided for, exercised, and loved on as much as time allows.
Yet, the greatest blessing we have is the continued support we receive from our amazing community - our donors - whether it’s through money, donations to the Thrift Store or just needed supplies; our volunteers - who faithfully walk our dogs, donate their time or assist at an adoption event; and our adopters – who find it in their hearts to open their homes to give our rescues the lives they deserve.
So, from all of us at Dogwood Animal Shelter and Thrift Store, we wish you a very Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you in the new year - the best is yet to come!

When Gabby’s family came down to meet her, they couldn’t help but notice another special girl who had been a part of our Dogwood family for years. After much consideration, they made the incredible decision to come back and adopt Tart!

If you’ve been to our shelter in the past four years, you’ve probably met Tart—our sweet, determined, and resilient girl who has touched countless hearts. She’s been a shining star of the Dogwood family since she was born, and it was finally her turn to go home. From losing the use of her back legs as a pup to conquering mobility with a wheelchair, Tart refused to give up.

For years, Tart waited for someone who could see her not for what she’s been through, but for who she is: a loving, playful, and truly special companion. That day finally came! Tart is now on her way home, where she belongs, surrounded by love and a family who recognized her unique spirit and couldn’t leave without making her a part of theirs.

To Tart’s new family, thank you for giving her the happily-ever-after she’s always dreamed of. And thank you for adopting not one, but two of our very special girls. And to everyone who supported Tart along the way, from cheering her on to helping her stand again, this moment is as much yours as it is hers.

We’ll miss you, Tart, but we couldn’t be happier for you and Gabby. Enjoy every moment of your new life—you deserve it all. 💛

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

This year, make a resolution that matters—help give our homeless dogs and cats the love and care they deserve. Join our incredible team of volunteers and start 2025 with purpose and compassion!
Join us for our walk-in orientation January 4th at 3:00pm!

Did you know our dogs and cats get their one on one time from our dedicated volunteers? Unfortunately, that only means a 15 minute walk or cuddle session a couple of times a week at best. Please consider helping us improve that by donating your time!

We will be hosting a walk-in orientation January 4th at 3:00pm in our community room here at the shelter. An application can be filled out online in advance, or at the time of the orientation.

Even if only an hour or two a month. Every second spent with a dog or cat helps make their stay with us a little bit brighter!

If you want to make a difference for our guys, but can't be directly involved for various reasons, you could also help out in our Thrift Store- which is more of a retail environment that helps provide finances to cover the care of everyone here at the shelter while they wait for forever homes.

After nearly six long years, it was finally Ray's turn! Ray got to go home today!

Ray walked out of our shelter for the very last time, tail wagging and ready to start a new chapter with a family who believes in him. It’s moments like these that remind us that miracles really do come true.

To everyone who supported Ray’s journey—thank you. Your kindness and belief in him helped make this incredible moment possible. And to Ray’s new family: Thank you so much for putting in the work to establish the beginning of an incredible bond.

Let’s celebrate Ray’s happy ending, and remember, there are still many more animals waiting for their own Christmas miracles.

A little elf stopped by this week and told us how Santa was going to make a special visit at our thrift store to meet all of the kids and pets of the lake area December 14th before Christmas Eve! 🎅🏻

To say we are ecstatic is an understatement. The good boys and girls at the shelter haven't quit waggin' since they heard the news!

Are you looking for an awesome Christmas present, well your search is over. Come meet Chip on December 7th at the Osage Beach Lowe’s/Marshalls mall. A volunteer will be walking him between (and in) these two stores from 9:30 am until about 12:30 pm. If you don’t immediately see chip, check in one of these two stores - most of the employees in the stores know chip and can tell you if they saw him enter the store. They are also hoping he gets a new home soon.

Chip is a good looking, well behaved and smart dog. He is a volunteer favorite and has been overlooked at the shelter. As a result, he has been there for over 3 years. He loves children, loves car rides and is very friendly. However Chip should be the only pet in your home as he likes all the attention.

A generous sponsor has paid his adoption fee and chip comes with a free Kansas City chiefs collar (which he has worn all season and look at the season the Chiefs have had!). Chip is wishing for the same luck in finding his new forever home.

Please help Chip get a new loving home for the holidays!!!

Come meet Chip on Saturday, October 5. He will be at Lowe's/Marshalls in Osage Beach from about 9 am until about 10:30, then will be at the strip in Lake Ozark until about 12:30. A volunteer will be walking him around. He is an awesome, smart and obedient dog who is desperately looking for his forever home. He has been at the shelter for three years.He is a volunteer favorite and loves people and kids. However, he will need to be the only pet in the home.This is your chance to get a great dog!!

Join us for kitten cuddles and play time! All of these junior house panthers are ready for their forever homes! Stop by for your own snuggle session anytime during business hours- and who knows!? 🐶🎓 Basic Obedience Classes 🎓🐶 October 18th - November 22nd Fall into good habits by turning over a new leaf, and joining us for our Basic Obedience Classes! We'll show you how to imprint invaluable skills, and help your pup to become a well-behaved member of your family and community. Foundational Skills will be covered, such as; Walking nicely on a leash, answering their name, coming when called, leaving an item of interest, manners around strangers, impulse control, and home etiquette. They will probably average her size. They won’t be available for adoption until they’ve weaned and had two of their puppy shots on board. If you have any questions let us know!
