Contact me today to get your horses up to date on their immunizations! ALL horses should receive CORE vaccinations annually against EEE/WEE, WNV, Tetanus, and Rabies. Horses may also need to be protected against several RISK based diseases dependent on their lifestyle, such as Influenza and Herpesvirus. And some may even need protection against lesser heard of diseases such as Botulism, Leptospirosis and Rotavirus. Contact me for more information on vaccination schedules and the diseases your animals should be protected from!

Have you ever wondered WHY we vaccinate horses in the spring? Because as the weather warms up, insect re-emerge and bring with them the potential of disease, like West Nile Virus and EEE/WEE which are both transmitted by mosquitoes. By vaccinating your horse prior to the start of mosquito season, you ensure your equine friend has a defense system ready to go against such diseases.

EEE/WEE, West Nile virus, Rabies and Tetanus are categorized as core vaccines, which means *every single horse* should receive them every year. Additional risk-based vaccines (Botulism, Equine Herpesvirus, Strangles, Equine Influenza, Potomac Horse Fever, Equine Viral Arteritis, Anthrax, Rotavirus, Snake Bite and Leptospiroris) are available that your veterinarian may or may not recommend depending on your horse’s individual situation (e.g., location/environment, lifestyle, use and age).

While you may be tempted to vaccinate your horse yourself with over-the-counter products to save yourself some money, be advised that the benefits of using a veterinarian for vaccinations far outweigh any savings you think you are making. For example, you may give your horses unnecessary vaccines or skip a booster dose, and the chance of improper storage/handling of products is far greater. Veterinarians know all the ins and outs: Vaccinations need to be scheduled around other medications to prevent interactions, and in the case of vaccine side effects, an experienced veterinarian is ultimately more qualified to handle the situation.

In addition, a vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for an annual physical examination of your equine friend, which allows your veterinarian to evaluate your horse’s nutrition and general health, plus detect and treat any conditions before they get established. So if you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling your horse's spring vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

To learn more, extensive vaccination guidelines are available to both horse owners and veterinarians on our website at https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines.

This morning I had two great assistants, Klaire and Kinsley helping work cows and calves before turning them out to pasture. It was a great opportunity to educate the future generation about herd health.

CATTLE PRODUCERS!!

I have put together a herd health management calendar to help keep your operation on track and continue building positive momentum in your herd. It is a spreadsheet-based calendar that provides approximate dates for major herd activities such as when to turn out and pull off bulls, when the ideal time for pregnancy checking is, as well as when to wean and process calves and cows.

At the top of the spreadsheet, simply input when you want your calving season to begin and end, the rest of the dates below (shown in blue) will automatically update to your chosen inputs. Both spring and fall calving herds can be managed on the same spreadsheet.

*I also have a calendar with all the products (vaccines, dewormers, implants, ectoparasite control products, etc.) that I recommend based off the most up to date research available. This calendar can be made available to any currently established clients. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

As a follow up to my earlier post, below are a few frequently asked questions and answers.

Q: Do you carry large animal vaccines, antibiotics, dewormer, etc. for purchase?

A: Yes, a small inventory is always kept, however, if needing large quantities, please let me know and an order can be placed. In general, orders are received and delivered within 24-48 hours. (Clients must have current VCPR in order to purchase prescription medications.)

Q: Do you have an ultrasound?

A: Yes! I have an ultrasound that is used largely for pregnancy diagnosis in cattle, horses, and small ruminants, but is also useful for looking at other structures such as scanning lungs, abdomens and potentially ligaments and joints in horses.

Q: Do you have a mobile chute for cattle processing and conducting examinations?

A: No. I currently do not have a mobile chute.

Q: Do you have a portable X-ray machine?

A: No. If x-rays are a needed diagnostic, referral to one of our local referral hospitals may be necessary.

Q: Do you provide any small animal services?

A: Yes, I carry all dog and cat vaccines as well as offer in home euthanasia. Making the decision to put down a family pet can be very difficult and emotional, by offering in home euthanasia, your pet can be laid to rest peacefully in the comfort of their own home. When further small animal services are provided, I’ll be the first to let you know!

Q: Do you have any haul in large animal facilities?

A: No, however, there are many generous people in our community that may be willing to lend a helping hand and allow the usage of their facilities if needed.

Q: Do you provide any services for poultry? (Chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc.)

A: No, however, I am always willing to learn something new and depending on the situation, may be able to offer additional information or get you in contact with someone who can better help you.

Over the past couple of months, I have received several questions about what a mobile/ambulatory veterinarian is and what kind of services I offer. Simply put, a mobile veterinarian is one who provides solely on farm/in home visits and appointments, without having a ‘brick and mortar’ clinic. Nearly all the same services can be provided as a typical veterinary clinic, but at the comfort of your own farm/home. For a list of specific services provided, please visit my website, and click on the 'Services' tab for more information! As always, don’t hesitate to give me a call for any additional questions or to schedule services!

With many cattle producers entering calving season we get a lot of questions about when and how to intervene or assist with difficult births. Below is a really good article from the University of Missouri outlining the birthing process, when to intervene, how to intervene and potential complications.

https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g2007

I will say there are a couple points I disagree with presented in the article. 1. I always place OB chains above the fetlock with a half hitch around the pastern (between dewclaws and hoof), this provides two points of contact with the calf on each leg, spreading out the force applied over a larger area to prevent any fractures or broken bones. 2. The article mentions recurrence of uterine prolapses in cattle. To my knowledge there is no hereditary component to uterine prolapses, unlike vaginal/cervical prolapses which occur prior to calving.

As always, don't hesitate to call with any questions regarding this or any other topics!

Six to 10 percent of all calves born in beef cow herds in the U.S. die at or soon after birth. About half of those deaths are due to calving difficulty (dystocia). This multi-million dollar annual loss is second only to losses from failing to conceive.Calving difficulty has received much more attent...
