At Garrison Limousin we breed for physical looks, confirmation including the udder, reproductive qualities, among other things.

The most important thing we breed for is functionality, not only for us but for functionality for almost anyone. These yearlings have thrived in the worst drought we've seen. Their dams carried and milked them in a drought. This group was weaned in a drought. The D3 drought has not stopped them from turning into greatness!

Out with the cows is this girl’s happy place. Don’t tease her with saying moo unless you plan on taking her out there. Also, if she sees them out the window you are doomed. She also knows how open the gate, so watch out.

What holds non-limousin people back from choosing Limi and for sure high percentage Limi?

Docility! Hospital bills are not cheap, a more calm herd prevents a few of those. Calmer cattle get more people interested because they don't have to worry about their kids being involved.

We breed our cattle to improve their faults and emphasize their attributes; each calf crop should be better than the last and the calves should be better than the dam and sire. We feel this is something all cattlemen should do.

These are great examples of good docility, and just darn cute! None of these were bottle calves. We do not breed the maternal protection out of them, our cows have stomped a coyote to death, but for them to stay around this farm they have to be good natured.

This is what promotes the breed, and gets the next generation of cattlemen interested. We MUST get the next generation interested, excited and involved with fullbloods and high percentage Limi for the breed to continue.

Update on everything that's we've been up to since our last post!

We have survived the drought this far (it's not over but looks to be getting better) hay season was cut short for Ron but farmers are optimistic for a good fall cutting.

We will be at the Foundation Sale 8 and are bringing Harvest Olympus semen with us. You can arrange purchase now while supplies last.

Our Punch cow, Polled Princess Punch 17P, calved at 18 YEARS OLD and it's a bull. We are looking forward to watching him grow into someone's herd sire.

Noelle, the oldest, and her husband Ryan also had their own baby at the end of May that she named Penelope; we affectionately call her Loop, or Sweet P.

Shelley retired from teaching and is spending her days watching grand baby Sweet P, and her two great nephews ages 1 and 5.

Livie had her four wisdom teeth pulled recently, but has made a recovery. Livie and her husband Zach have purchased some ground and looking to build a house soon.

It's been awhile since we posted, but have thought of our Limousin friends through this season of our lives. We are looking forward to seeing everyone this fall at sales, cooler weather, rain, and watching the herd grow and calves move to their forever farms.

You ever call something a heifer that ain't a heifer, just because it's acting like one? Well have we got a prime example. This cliffhanger x Wild Storm cow had her third calf this week and apparently was looking for a cool place to labor and decided to try out a water birth. The picture was taken after Ron moved the fresh heifer calf out of the water onto a near by gravel bar. The calf is doing fine.

How is spring going for everyone? Here on the farm, one group of calves is weaned, the grass is green, spring cows are calved out, and the mud is plentiful (for now). Even though spring calving season ended it's about to get busy again with hay season starting. We are enjoying watching the herd graze and next group grow, even if it is soggy. We won't complain about the mud because every rain is one closer to fall, and another day without a drought.

People like to bring up Limousin being the carcass breed and discuss marbling, but say about a Fullblood, 100% limousin calf out of 100% dam and sire do not marble. These steaks out of one of our FULLBLOODS prove otherwise. Marbling EPDs, along with all other EPDs can be misleading due to inaccuracy. However, the proof is in these steaks and these pictures don't lie.
