🕯️ Why Scented Candles Are Dangerous for Cats – And Safer Alternatives 🕯️
Scented candles are a holiday favorite, but did you know they can be harmful to your cats?
According to Dr. Karen Becker, DVM, “Like air fresheners, scented candles can also contain dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde and VOCs. Cheaply made candles can contain toxic levels of heavy metals in the wicks. When one of these candles burns, the lead particles are released into the air. Frequent use of these candles could contribute to the development of health conditions such as asthma, allergies, and cancer.“
Cats are highly sensitive to airborne toxins and these toxins often trigger unwanted reactions, like asthma attacks.
✨ Safe Alternatives for a Fresh-Scented Home
Open your windows for fresh air! The smallest breeze can clear out stale air.
Simmer water with lemon, lime, and/or orange peels - mint, cinnamon sticks, and/or cloves for a natural, cozy scent.
Invest in an air purifier to not only freshen the air but also remove harmful particles.
Use only cat-safe essential oils (like those from AnimalEO) if you choose to diffuse – many essential oils are toxic to cats.
Let’s make this holiday season safer for our kitties by ditching the candles and choosing natural ways to keep our homes smelling fresh! 🐾💚
