Animal's Best Friend Fund

Animal's Best Friend Fund ABF is an all volunteer, non-profit animal welfare group dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation. Please call 269-808-0064 for more information.

Our Mission:
The mission of Animal’s Best Friend Fund is to reduce the stray, feral and unwanted dog and cat populations in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties (Michigan) by providing spay/neuter programs targeted to assist low/fixed income persons and feral cat caretakers. Our programs are reducing the number of cats and dogs being euthanized at area animal control facilities. How We Work:
Animal’s

Best Friend Fund is an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. We partner with select area veterinary clinics to provide spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats in need. It is our policy that over 90% of all income received goes directly to helping animals - not to salaries or excessive administrative expenses. Since our inception in 1981, we have helped to spay/neuter over 50,000 cats and dogs! Our Programs:

Subsidized Spay/Neuter Program for Cats and Dogs:
If funding is available, Animal's Best Friend will pay for part of your pet's spay/neuter surgery. The subsidy amounts are as follows:

Cat: $40

Dog: $80

Each month, ABF works with certain area veterinary clinics by authorizing the clinic to provide a certain amount in subsidies.

Call 269-624-1090 and listen to the recording to find out which veterinary clinics have been selected, and then ask to make an appointment with one of them. When you schedule the appointment, ask if there is any ABF money left to apply to your pet's surgery. You will be responsible for paying the balance of your bill after the subsidy is applied.

Your best chance of getting the surgery subsidized is by scheduling your appointment early in the month when the clinics are first authorized to use the money. Free Spay/Neuter Program for Feral and Free-Roaming Cats:
ABF also strives to make a difference in the lives of feral and free-roaming cats by focusing on TNR (trap-neuter-release) in selected areas of Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties. What Doesn't Animal's Best Friend Do? Animal's Best Friend's focus is on spay/neuter. If you need help with other vet care, help finding a home for an animal, or want to adopt a pet, please contact some of the other Michigan organizations who may be able to assist you. See the Resources page for help.

It’s midday on Giving Tuesday, and the need has never been clearer.

In just one week this month, we were contacted about over 90 feral cats across four crisis situations. With no low-cost clinic in our area, these animals rely on us — and we rely on you.

Every $200 sponsors one spay/neuter.
Every donation prevents suffering.
Every share helps us reach someone new.

1 Day Until Giving Tuesday!

This year brought a unique project: helping cats living at a new transitional housing site in Kalamazoo.

As families prepare to move in, we’re ensuring the cats already living there can stay safely — without continuing to reproduce.

We estimate $2,000 is needed to spay/neuter the 6–10 cats on the property.

Giving Tuesday helps both people and animals stay safe, warm, and supported! 💛

3 Days Until Giving Tuesday!

Thanks to donors like you, we’ve spayed and neutered over 1086 cats and dogs this year alone, bringing our total to 69,071 since ABF’s founding in 1981. These numbers - through 10/31/25 - have prevented thousands of unwanted litters and unimaginable hardships.

Let’s keep that momentum going!

4 Days Until Giving Tuesday!

Every colony we assist costs hundreds - often thousands - to fully sterilize.

This year alone, spay/neuter expenses have already reached $132,599.62.

On Tuesday, your donation goes straight to surgeries that stop suffering before it starts.

5 Days Until Giving Tuesday!

This time of year, the calls don’t slow down - they surge.

Just this month, we were contacted about over 90 feral cats needing urgent help across four locations.

With no low-cost spay/neuter options nearby, preventing endless litters takes all of us.

Giving Tuesday is your chance to make a direct, local impact. ❤️🩵🤍

Hope, Challenges, and the Reality of Feral Rescue.

Feral cat rescue is unpredictable, emotional, and often far more complicated than it looks from the outside. But this experience has also shown the incredible things a community can accomplish when people come together with compassion.

What began with three Good Samaritans has grown into a connected effort supported by a trusted local vet, a few caring animal control contacts, experienced trappers, rescue partners, veteran animal advocates, and Animals Best Friend Fund helping with awareness and limited support. It truly has become a community-powered mission.

When the team returned Monday evening to bring the mama cat and her three young kittens to safety, things didn’t go as planned - but there has been meaningful progress:
Local agencies now recognize the urgency and have stepped up to help prioritize this little family.

Because the remaining cats are very young and very feral — and with cold weather approaching — we’re being careful about what details we share publicly. The caregiver on site continues to feed and watch over them while next steps come together.

And in the middle of the challenges, there is real hope:
💛 The two gray brothers trapped on Sunday were neutered today and are recovering safely together in their new home.
💛 The five kittens trapped on Friday are thriving in the care of Rose’s Rescued Cats, an experienced rescue who stepped up immediately to help.

We simply want our community to know who is involved, who is helping, and how many caring hands are working together for these animals. No one is doing this alone — and every bit of progress is happening because people and groups are showing up for one another.

If anyone wants to stay connected to the ongoing efforts or learn more about the partners helping behind the scenes, you’re welcome to reach out: 📩 [email protected]

Thank you for caring, thank you for sharing, and thank you for being part of a community that makes rescue possible.

UPDATE: Two More Safe!

For everyone following this rescue effort - we have more good news to share!

Today, the two young gray brothers were successfully trapped and brought to a wonderful new start where they will stay together, safe, warm, and on their way to proper vetting. 🩶

Tomorrow afternoon, we will be heading back out to continue the effort and focus on trapping the mama and her three mid-September kittens. Getting this little family safely secured is our top priority - especially with mama being very pregnant again and the weather getting MUCH colder after tomorrow! 🍀

Thank you to everyone sending encouragement, sharing updates, and offering help.

Your support is making all the difference!
