Our Mission:
The mission of Animal’s Best Friend Fund is to reduce the stray, feral and unwanted dog and cat populations in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties (Michigan) by providing spay/neuter programs targeted to assist low/fixed income persons and feral cat caretakers. Our programs are reducing the number of cats and dogs being euthanized at area animal control facilities. How We Work:
Animal’s

Best Friend Fund is an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.We partner with select area veterinary clinics to provide spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats in need. ​It is our policy that over 90% of all income received goes directly to helping animals - not to salaries or excessive administrative expenses. Since our inception in 1981, we have helped to spay/neuter over 50,000 cats and dogs! Our Programs:

Subsidized Spay/Neuter Program for Cats and Dogs:
If funding is available, Animal's Best Friend will pay for part of your pet's spay/neuter surgery. The subsidy amounts are as follows:

Cat: $40

Dog: $80

Each month, ABF works with certain area veterinary clinics by authorizing the clinic to provide a certain amount in subsidies.

​Call 269-624-1090 and listen to the recording to find out which veterinary clinics have been selected, and then ask to make an appointment with one of them. When you schedule the appointment, ask if there is any ABF money left to apply to your pet's surgery. You will be responsible for paying the balance of your bill after the subsidy is applied.

​Your best chance of getting the surgery subsidized is by scheduling your appointment early in the month when the clinics are first authorized to use the money. Free Spay/Neuter Program for Feral and Free-Roaming Cats:
ABF also strives to make a difference in the lives of feral and free-roaming cats by focusing on TNR (trap-neuter-release) in selected areas of Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties. What Doesn't Animal's Best Friend Do? Animal's Best Friend's focus is on spay/neuter. If you need help with other vet care, help finding a home for an animal, or want to adopt a pet, please contact some of the other Michigan organizations who may be able to assist you. It's here! Kitten season is pretty much a year round/no end in sight thing. Anytime you feed a cat is the right time to get him/her fixed. 😸💖

That's if the kittens survive. Free kittens are sometimes used as bait for dog fights (especially in southern States (US)). The average US citizen may be unaware that dog fighting is a thing; those involved & their supporters stay out of the public's radar because it is illegal. They won't tell you why they want the entire litter; if you ask (guess what), they lie. Kittens, puppies & small breed dogs are stolen from their owners fenced yards to be used for either bait (dog fights) or food for pet snakes. Aren't humans just cheap. 🤬💔

If you witness a dog fight taking place, call 911. If you suspect dog fighting, call 1-877-TIP-HSUS to report. In North Carolina, call the NC Attorney Generals Animal Welfare Hotline 1-855-290-6915. Google "How to identify possible dog fighting" to learn the signs.

🐈‍⬛ It is FREE to separate unaltered males from females until they are spayed/neutered.

🐈 It is FREE to touch/handle kittens when they are small to make them adoptable and/or easy to corral for appointments.

🐈‍⬛ It is FREE to withhold food from stray cats when we have arranged getting a trapper to you. We cannot catch unhandleable cats if they aren’t hungry.

🐈 It is FREE to point friends, family, and neighbors in the right direction if they need help - or to send a message on their behalf.

During the month of January we had 159 cats and dogs neutered. We’re off to a great start to 2025 thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. Keep supporting our fundraising events and let’s see what we can accomplish for the animals this year!

Thanks to everyone who baked, donated, volunteered or made a purchase to help make our Valentine bake sale a success. We raised $2352.02 today and we completely sold out of baked goods. Our next bake sale will be our St. Patrick’s Day bake sale on March 15, 9:00-3:00 at Pet Supplies Plus Westnedge who provides the location for our bake sales.
