In the spirit of the Paris games our team participated in The Veterinary Olympics this week. Categories included timed E Collar assembly, blindfolded pack wrap, p**p bag toss, pill vial stacking, and other fun games. Looking forward to some winter games in a few years.

If you travel to Canada with your dog please be aware that the rules for getting back into the US are changing on August 1st, 2024. There is a new process and new paperwork that will need to be filled out. Your pet must be microchipped as well as having a current rabies vaccine and appropriate paperwork.

Just like mosquitos being out earlier this year. We have also seen a uprise of ticks on patients this year.
Ticks come out when the weather is 35 degrees or above! This year was a record of the warmest winter we've seen in Minnesota in awhile. Make sure your pet is up to date on flea/tick and heartworm prevention!!!!

It’s time to pass on the cocoa mulch. This type of mulch is made from cocoa bean hulls. Although popular due to its attractive color and odor, it also attracts dogs with its sweet, chocolate smell. Depending on the amount, ingestion can cause a range of clinical signs from vomiting and diarrhea, to muscle tremors, elevated heart rate, hyperactivity, and even seizures. Instead consider shredded pine or cedar bark which are less toxic alternatives!

Is your pet vaccinated for Leptospirosis?
As the weather gets nicer, we all get cabin fever. Don't forget about your pet's health. Leptospirosis is the most widespread infection among animal and human species worldwide, and dogs can be the source of infection. It is most commonly spread by rats, and we are #11 on rat population in the united states.

Where: Bacteria can get into water or soil and survive for weeks to months.
How: Bacteria multiply in the bloodstream and move to the kidneys and other tissues to continue reproducing.
What: Once the bacteria reach the kidneys and bladder, bacteria are spread each time the animal urinates.
When: The bacteria enter the body through the eyes, nose, mouth, a cut, or a scratch.
Who: Other dogs, wild animals, or people can become infected through direct or indirect contact with the urine
