Recently, our rehab center has received several calls about crows. Although we typically don't handle birds and often refer them to other specialists, we have a soft spot for ravens and crows, so we decided to take on the challenge. We took in our first crow, and upon examination, noticed signs of lethargy, slight twitching, and lack of coordination. We reached out to a rehabber with more experience in birds, who informed us that West Nile Virus is unfortunately common in American Crows. This prompted us to research further, and we discovered that West Nile Virus, a mosquito-borne illness, can affect over 250 bird species and is particularly deadly to crows. Infected birds can spread the virus through their secretions and f***s, potentially transmitting it to others.

Although this crow only survived a short time, it helped us learn more in our ongoing mission to support all of New York’s native wildlife. It’s a reminder of the many challenges our wild neighbors face every day and the incredible resilience they show in overcoming them.

Fishers (Pekania pennanti) are widespread throughout the northern forests of North America. The name “fisher" is a misnomer, as they have very little connection to fish. Rather, it comes from a European Mustelid (Mustela putorius) that is referred to as “fitch.” Fishers are considered uncommon, largely due to their secretive habits.

2 new babies in, poor opossum was covered in fly strike and the little boy squirrel was found in the rainstorm in the middle of a parking lot! Consider donating to their care! We are almost to release of most of the raccoons but we care for wild ones year round and are always preparing for the next season! 🦝🦇🦨🐿️

Thank you Aiden DeGroff for choosing us for your Eagle Scout project! Not only did this young man come out and perform community service hours helping us prep outdoor enclosures, he also built us some raccoon den boxes and bat boxes for our releases. The Eagle Scouts/Boy Scouts have various projects that they have to do to earn their badges! We love that we were chosen for this! ❤️

We would also like to thank the following who were involved in this project!

We were made aware of a mangy fox frequenting the west side of Oswego. Everyone wanted the either the fox captured and treated or killed. With the help of a few local residents we were able to confirm a feed location to treat in place. At that point I made up some special dishes to basically lace with the medication that should cure this guy. This morning the homeowner confirmed that the fox indeed ate the whole concoction left for him. Fingers crossed we may have just saved this fella! 🦊

We are looking for anyone wanting to donate an outdoor dog kennel (6foot tall) that we can place on a pre-release site for raccoons. We need to secure one asap so we can get this fully functional.
