We held a low-cost spay/neuter clinic at the Ottawa location today and served 35 cats and 5 dogs in one day! Every patient also gets free vaccines courtesy of Petco Love and a free microchip courtesy of Fi. Over 650 privately-owned pets just like Charlie have been spayed/neutered at this location since the beginning of the year and we are on track to exceed 1,000 surgeries for the public this year! Meet Leo.
He’s sweet but he’s spicy. He’s calm then he’s feisty. Our man Leo isn’t sure exactly what he’s feeling usually. One second he’s nice and the next he’s not. He can be a ray of sunshine…and the thunderstorm. He needs someone who understands his mood swings and loves him anyways🤷🏽♀️ Leo is a looker…handsome as can be😍 He’s got the personality too…sometimes multiple. One second he’s purring and the next he’s angry. He’ll seek attention from you but growl once you go to pet him. He’s sure to keep you on your toes. Life will never be dull with Leo.
Leo would do best in a home where he is the only pet (he’s a bully)….probably best in a home without small children as well (he shows no mercy as anything small is viewed as a wrestling opponent).

We sure did! These adorable 5-month-old puppies were dumped in a wire crate outside our building overnight. They have been here for ALMOST A MONTH with no interest! That's why we lowered their price, in hopes of finding their furever homes!
They are a bit shy at first but within 10 mins of sitting with them, they want to crawl in your lap. They are sweet, fast learners, and would love for you to give them a chance. Since they are puppies they will need training but we now offer that as well!

Our annual Pooch Plunge is right around the corner!
Join us August 5th from 4-6pm as the Ottawa Rec shares their pool with your pups! All dogs must be on a leash, and be sure to bring proof of your pets' recent rabies vaccination. A $5 donation to Prairie Paws will provide entry to the pool, and you will not be permitted access to the pool if you are not accompanying a dog.

Sweet little Heidi, where do I even begin?Take my word for it, this girl is a special one. She is the best dog but needs a lot of time and patience to prove it. We have no idea what her past was like but it seems it wasn’t very good to her. She is completely shut down and scared when meeting new people. In the shelter, how you present yourself to potential adopters is what gets you out of here. Heidi is absolutely petrified of new people which has caused her to become our longest stay. Sometimes, she won’t even make it down the hallway if she sees an unfamiliar face. The second someone sees her shut down and shy, they overlook her. Everyone comes to the shelter wanting the “perfect dog” or has a certain image in their head of what they’re looking for. No one takes the time to adopt the dogs like this. This won’t be an easy dog. She will take lots of time to gain your trust. She probably won’t approach you, she can be a runner out of fear, she is going to be a project. She will be a dog that will take 100% commitment and dedication. I promise you, if you put the time into her and gain her trust, she will be the best dog you’ve ever had. She has won the hearts of every staff member and volunteer that works with her. It took us months, but now she is finally comfortable enough to show us her true personality. What a personality that is! I’d almost guarantee every staff member and volunteer has a million Heidi pictures & videos on their phone. This dog is truly a gift. A gift that will come with time.
In my time here, I’ve adopted out hundreds of dogs. Some that were easy, some that were a little bit more of a challenge, and others that I didn’t even really get the chance to know as they were out of here so fast. Heidi is by far one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. Trying to get someone to commit to a dog like her is hard. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to adoption. I want people to know what they’re getting. She’s a work in progress and no one wants to take on a dog like that. I’ve written facebook posts, volunteers take her to all kinds of events, we promote her in any way we can; all in hopes we’ll finally find that perfect person to give her a shot. She’s been adopted twice and returned due to her being so shut down and scared. They say a dog can take up to 3 months to feel fully comfortable and I truly believe it will take Heidi every second of those 3 months. She needs someone who will give her all the time she needs and a lot of love along the way.
Of all the dogs I’ve worked with in my time here, this one will always be special. I so badly want someone to realize how special she really is.
Please PLEASE please share this post. Heidi’s perfect home is out there somewhere and I, along with many others, am determined to find it. Someone will fall in love with her and be willing to put in the work. Once they do, they will have the world’s very best dog. We just need someone to give her a fighting chance. No dog deserves to live in the shelter.

‼️‼️‼️‼️ URGENT PLEA FOR HELP: WE ARE AT CRITICAL CAPACITY ‼️‼️‼️ Adoptions are currently reaching an all-time low. The effects of this can be felt nationwide, but especially here within our own community. We desperately need our supporters now more than ever! We are currently providing care to 100+ animals, over half of which are already available for adoption, and yet we have ZERO interested adopters willing to give them a home. We need YOUR help to promote all of the adorable adoptable faces here at the shelter & give them the best possible chance of reaching their fur-ever families! As our waitlist to surrender continues to skyrocket, our number of adoptions has done nothing but dwindle. We aim to only take in as many animals as we have the space and means to care for. However, being able to provide shelter for the pets in need within our community is crucial to avoid any desperate, potentially dangerous, results such as the two terrified and soaked 3-month-old kittens abandoned in a duct-taped tote on our front doorstep this morning... (we would have gladly helped them avoid this sad and cruel situation had they done this during open hours). Without adoptions, the crucial space we need to prevent these disheartening situations from happening is unavailable. Please help us help them. Everyone has different requirements when looking to add a new pet to their family, as they should. However, we feel as though not everyone understands that just because we don't have "purebred" or "designer" breeds doesn't mean that you can't find a pet at the shelter that checks all of the boxes when it comes to what you're looking for in your new companion. Playtime with each other, treats that fall on the ground, a new toy. Corky has been here for 101 DAYS!! Angel has been here for 68 DAYS!! Though, they give a false impression of being not well-mannered and rambunctious. They CAN AND WILL calm down with the right mental stimulation and activity. They even both know a few tricks! Our sweet boy, Vixen, spends his day walking around the cattery crying for a new life. Day after day it’s the same routine. Meet Tyga. His kennel card says he has only been here since the 13th of February, but his history at Prairie Paws has sadly been much longer. Tyga first came to the shelter as a stray in December of 2023. The staff tried their best to track down his owner but no one ever came forward to reclaim him. After waiting for a few months, he started to think that he would never see his original owner ever again. Just as he was about to give up at the beginning of February, Tyga was reunited with his old owner! He was so excited to see them again. He was able to go back home. Everything was starting to return back to "normal." Sadly, their reunion was short-lived. Words like "dump" and "surrender" started to swirl around and didn't make sense to him. Soon, Tyga was back at the shelter. Broken-hearted and confused, he retreated once again into this all too familiar place. Now he is once again waiting for someone to give him a chance. As of late, our average length of stay for dogs is about 20 days. Tyga is well over the average when his total time at Prairie Paws is accounted for. At 7 years old, we would hate to see Tyga sit here any longer when he could be living out his golden years in a peaceful home filled with love. Could you be his saving grace?

The only cat you need is ZOOM ZOOM! This sweet gal has officially sat in our shelter, unloved & unwanted, for 60 days as of today. While Zoom Zoom may not be the right fit for just any home... we KNOW that the PURR-fect home is out there for her! Zoom Zoom is estimated to be 7 years young... and without a doubt has plenty of life & energy left to keep her going for many more (somewhat) happy years. Her personality can usually be compared to a sour patch kid... She loves to rub against her kennel door to lure you into giving her pets. However, if you don't pet her to her satisfaction, she will definitely let you know.
