Move over Patty Mahomes, there’s a new Patrick in town😎

Meet Patrick, a 2 year old heeler mix.

His hobbies include snacks, playing with his doggie friends, more snacks, and did I mention snacks? He’s got the body type of a tator tot…just means there’s more to love❤️

Patrick knows all sorts of cool tricks. He’s a master at sit and if you don’t give him the treat quick enough, he can sit and lay down 30 times in a row until given his reward. He’s got beauty and brains🤓

Patrick has been in the shelter far too long. This quirky cutie is ready to find a home of his own. What better way to ring in the upcoming Super bowl than with your very own Patrick to cheer on Mahomes & the boys❤️

Give Them Room to Run; donate to our Emporia Fence Fund!

Have you ever watched a dog experience pure joy—the way their eyes light up as they race across an open field, paws pounding the earth, tail wagging with uncontainable excitement?

For shelter dogs, play isn’t just fun—it’s healing. Many come to us uncertain, afraid, unsure of the world. Giving them space to run and roam isn’t just about exercise—it’s about freedom. It’s about helping them feel like dogs again.

We’re working to build a significantly larger fenced play yard at our Emporia shelter so every dog in our care can experience that joy.

Because dogs need to run. They need room to heal, to grow, to play. And we need your help to make it happen.

We're raising $20,000 to build that dream. Will you help? Donate today:

Update - he has been reunited with his owner❤️

Meet Lucky, a dog who is down on his luck. He somehow found himself as a stray. His finder decided to keep him for awhile in hopes he could find his owner. No one ever came for Lucky. We don’t know his story or how he got here, but the gray in his muzzle indicates he’s had a long life. Upon intake, we noticed Lucky is a little different than some of our other canine companions. He seems to be completely blind and very hard of hearing. This poor dog does not belong in the shelter. He needs a miracle. If you have a soft spot for seniors, please consider adopting or sharing this post to help get the word out. Lucky could use all the luck he can get🍀

This is just a glimpse of what he’s done since he got here. With the kennel noise and chaos around him, he walks in circles and barks up to the sky. He’s lost & confused. Please up us find Lucky a place to call home.

Help us give our Emporia shelter dogs the space to play that they deserve!

Concrete isn’t kind to paws, and every dog deserves the joy of running on soft grass. That’s why Prairie Paws is launching a $20,000 project to expand the play yard at our Emporia shelter.

The current play yard is built on a concrete pad and doesn't include a grassy area-- Let’s change that together! This expansion will provide plenty of grassy space—a safe, fun area where our shelter dogs can stretch their legs and play together.

We need your help to raise the funds necessary to make this dream a reality. Every dollar takes us closer to giving these dogs the outdoor freedom they need.

Donate today and be a part of something life-changing. Click the link to donate:

Dear Prairie Paws supporters, I am writing this in hopes we find Leo a forever home. Leo has had quite the track record here. He was originally a transfer from another shelter back in 2022. I’m not sure how long he’s been in the shelter system as we have no records from before his transfer to us. In the time we’ve had him, he’s been adopted and returned a few times due to his UNIQUE personality.

Leo is an acquired taste. He’s not the right cat for everyone. He needs someone who understands him and loves him the way he is. He can be the sweetest cat and then the naughtiest cat, all in a matter of minutes. I truly believe he is an adult cat with single kitten syndrome. This is what we refer to as cats that never had another feline to teach them at a young age. He never learned that he plays too rough or that you’re not supposed to randomly bite people just for fun. He’s just a giant kitten still trying to figure out how to be a cat. He truly is a kitten in an adult body.

I’ve worked with TONS of cats in my time here at Prairie Paws. I can honestly say, Leo is one of a kind. This cat is by far one of my favorites as he always keeps you on your toes. He’s one of the most beautiful cats with his charming little orange mustache. His MASSIVE personality is just the icing on the cake. I truly believe the right person is out there that is willing to give him the forever home he deserves. I wish more than anything that I could take him home, but I know his person is out there somewhere.

I’m not sure how Leo would do in a home with another cat. Part of me believes he would be best in a home where he’s the only pet and part of me thinks he might benefit from having a buddy. We really won’t know until we try. That’s all Leo needs, is someone to try. Someone to give him a chance. Please share this post far and wide. Spread the word for sweet Leo. No animal deserves to spend its life in the shelter. There’s someone out there for him, we just haven’t found them yet.

Sincerely,
a hopeful shelter worker & Leo’s biggest fan🐾

My whole camera role is filled with pictures of Leo so please enjoy🥰

We have a few new faces here at Prairie Paws that you may not have seen yet. Velvet and V***n came in together as strays and never got reclaimed. They are both Mixed Breeds and very friendly. Velvet is 10 months old so still has a little puppy energy in her. V***n is only a year old and full of energy. They have been loving the snow so if you want a dog that loves being out in the snow they are your girls! Marston came to us as a Surrender and is shy at first but warms up to you very quickly! He knows how to sit and stay and likes the company of other dogs. He is a 4-year-old black lab that is looking for a forever home! Last but not least is Chanel. She was here as a puppy and got adopted and it didn't work out at her home so she came back to us and is now looking for a new home. She is a year old Shepherd mix that would love to have a new home. She is shy at first but warms up pretty quick. She also knows how to shake. If you would like to see any of these pups you can come in any business hours. We are open Monday-Friday 9-6 and Saturday and Sunday 1-5. You can also see them on our website at prairiepaws.org or give us a call at (785)-242-2967.
