Colby Lovell is known just as well for his top-horsepower and ranch work as he is for his gold buckle heading ability. From Madisonville, Texas, Lovell has competed in ProRodeo since 2006 when he was a freshman at Blinn College, the same year he won the Southwest Region collegiate championship in the tie-down roping. In 2009, he finished second to fellow ironman Russell Cardoza at the World’s Greatest Roper, and he qualified for his first National Finals Rodeo that year.
Since then, Lovell has made six more NFRs, including a spot at the 2020 NFR in Arlington, Texas, where Lovell and Paul Eaves won the gold buckles without placing in the average—a feat only accomplished by winning the last three go-rounds outright after a hard crossfire call seemingly took them out of the race in Round 7.
Lovell, a fan of good hunting dogs, raises and trains them, too, as well as versatile ranch and performance horses on his family’s ranch in Madisonville.
Since slowing his rodeo schedule in 2021, Lovell has focused on training futurity rope horses, winning the reserve heeling title at the American Rope Horse Futurity Association’s World Championship in Fort Worth in 2022. Lovell headed for Cade Rice, the one man who beat him, and then he went on to win the Riata Buckle’s $60,000 heading title at the Lazy E two weeks later with Dakota Kirchenschlager. In 2023, he again won the Riata Buckle, this time heeling in the #14.5 on 5-year-old stallion Pepinstep.
Lovell and wife Kassidy have been married for 12 years, with children, Levi and Jewel.
Lovell was a crowd favorite at the 2023 edition of the Cinch Timed Event Championship, fearless when it came to running down bull do***ng steers and never quitting—even long after the 60-second buzzer. He finished eighth last year, winning $3,000 in his first appearance. In 2024, his goal is to complete the course and highlight his horsepower with the help of switchender and long-time friend Ty Arnold in the team roping.
