Snuffle mats are a great way to serve meals when you want your dog to slow down eating but also a great way to get exercise on these brutally cold days. Sniffing enrichment uses just as much if not more energy than a walk and they love it!!

Comment MAT if you’d like the link to the mats I’m using. I use the same ones for my little dogs too!

When mom puzzles so does everyone else. We all have our different styles. Teddy is slow and steady and waits for someone to do the work and then steal the snacks. Bella sees how fast she can get all the snacks to move to someone else’s and take theirs. Shiloh knows he’s gotta be thorough and quick if he wants to keep the snacks before someone else takes from him. 😁

🎄Tree Trouble: Tips to Keep Pets Safe Around Holiday Decor🎄

The holiday tree can be irresistible to our curious pets, but it’s important to keep them safe while enjoying the festive vibes. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Why Pets Are Drawn to Trees
• The twinkling lights, shiny ornaments, and enticing smells of pine can spark curiosity in both cats and dogs.
• Cats love to climb, while dogs might see decorations as new chew toys!

2️⃣ Opt for Pet-Safe Decorations
• Avoid glass or breakable ornaments that can shatter and cause injuries.
• Skip tinsel and ribbon, which can cause dangerous blockages if swallowed.
• Choose shatterproof, non-toxic ornaments and place them higher on the tree.

3️⃣ Secure the Tree
• Use a sturdy tree stand and anchor the tree to a wall or ceiling with fishing line or hooks to prevent tipping.
• Opt for a smaller or tabletop tree if your pet is particularly mischievous!

4️⃣ Keep Cords and Lights Safe
• Use cord covers or tape to secure wires and prevent chewing.
• Spray cords with pet-safe deterrents like bitter apple spray to discourage curious pets.
• Always unplug lights when you’re not around.

5️⃣ Create a “No-Tree Zone”
• Use baby gates or barriers to limit access to the tree.
• Train your pet with commands like “leave it” and reward them for staying away.
• Place a soft deterrent, like aluminum foil or double-sided tape, around the base to keep curious cats at bay.

🎄 Holiday Treats: What’s Safe and What’s Not for Your Pets? 🎄

The holidays are a time for indulgence, but some festive foods can be dangerous for your furry friends. Here’s what to keep in mind when treating your pets this season:

1️⃣ Holiday Food Hazards to Avoid
🚫 Chocolate: Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats.
🚫 Grapes and Raisins: Can cause kidney failure in dogs.
🚫 Onions, Garlic, and Chives: Harmful to pets’ red blood cells.
🚫 Alcohol and Caffeine: Even small amounts can be life-threatening.
🚫 Fatty Foods: Too much fat can lead to pancreatitis (beware turkey skin and gravies).

2️⃣ DIY Pet-Safe Treat Recipes
Try these easy, pet-friendly options:
🍪 Peanut Butter Pup Cookies:
• Ingredients: Whole wheat flour, unsweetened applesauce, and xylitol-free peanut butter.
• Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes.
🐾 Catnip Tuna Bites:
• Ingredients: Canned tuna, egg, and a pinch of catnip.
• Mix and bake small pieces at 375°F for 10 minutes.

3️⃣ Moderation Is Key
• Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily caloric intake.
• Break treats into smaller portions to spread the holiday joy!

4️⃣ Watch for Signs of Food Allergies or Reactions
• Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, itching, swelling, or excessive licking.
• Contact your vet immediately if you notice these signs.

5️⃣ Emergency Contact Numbers
🚨 Keep these handy:
• Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661
• ASPCA Animal Poison Control: 888-426-4435

Celebrate safely and share the love this holiday season! What treats do your pets enjoy during the holidays? Let us know below! 🐾

❄️Cozy Up! Choosing the Perfect Pet Bed for Winter Nights

☃️As the temperature drops, make sure your furry friend has a warm and comfy spot to snuggle up. Here’s how to choose the best bed for your pet this winter!

1️⃣ Types of Pet Beds to Consider
• Orthopedic Beds: Ideal for older pets or those with joint pain (e.g., Big Barker for dogs or K&H Memory Foam beds).
• Heated Beds: Keep your pet cozy with self-warming or plug-in beds (e.g., K&H Thermo-Snuggly Sleeper).
• Cushioned Beds: Soft, plush options are perfect for pets who love to burrow (e.g., Furhaven Plush Donut Beds).

2️⃣ Choose Materials Carefully
• Opt for fleece, sherpa, or microfiber for warmth and softness.
• Look for hypoallergenic materials if your pet has allergies.
• Waterproof linings can help with spills or accidents.

3️⃣ Get the Perfect Fit
• Measure your pet from nose to tail while lying down and add 6–12 inches for extra space.
• Small dogs and cats might prefer enclosed beds, while larger dogs need open, spacious options.

4️⃣ Keep It Fresh and Odor-Free
• Choose beds with removable, machine-washable covers for easy cleaning.
• Use pet-safe fabric sprays or baking soda to combat odors between washes.

5️⃣ DIY Option: Blanket Nests
• Use old fleece blankets to create a cozy nest. Simply fold and layer in a box or laundry basket for an easy, low-cost solution!

Why do cats knead? It’s their way of saying, ‘I trust you.’ 🐾💖

🐈‍⬛Kneading is a comforting, instinctual behavior that starts in kittenhood. When nursing, kittens knead to stimulate milk flow, creating a sense of comfort they carry into adulthood.

🐈Here are a few reasons why your cat kneads:
🌟Marking Their Territory: Cats have scent glands in their paws, so kneading is one way they claim you (or their favorite spot) as “theirs.”
♥️Stretching and Relaxation: Kneading helps cats stretch their muscles and relax, especially when they feel calm and safe.
✨Making a Cozy Spot: In the wild, cats knead to prepare a soft, comfy sleeping area by patting down grass or leaves.
❣️It’s a Love Language: If your cat kneads on you, take it as a sign of affection and trust. You’re their safe space!

🐾Next time your cat kneads, know it’s their way of saying, “I’m happy here!”

🐕‍🦺Leash Manners: Making Winter Walks Stress-Free🦮

1. Choose the right leash for icy conditions-choose a shorter leash to keep them close.🦮

2. Train for loose-leash walking. Make sure your dog has good manners and can safely use a loose leash for exploring but come back to heel when asked.🐕

3. Using paw balm or booties for winter walks to protect their pads.🐾

4. Reflective gear for early sunsets.🧤

5. Positive reinforcement for staying close.❤️

🐶🎄Holiday Dog Treats: Naughty or Nice? What to Buy (and Avoid) This Christmas!

🚫What NOT to Get Your Dog:

1. Rawhides
• Hard to digest and can cause blockages in the digestive tract.
• Often processed with chemicals like formaldehyde & bleach.
• Can splinter, be a choking hazard or cause internal damage

2. Treats with Artificial Additives
• Artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives may cause allergies or behavioral issues.
• These additives provide no nutritional benefit and can accumulate in the body over time.

3. Cooked Bones
• Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or punctures in the gastrointestinal tract.
• They lack the natural nutrients found in raw, unprocessed bones.

🌟What TO Get Your Dog:

1. Freeze-Dried Treats
• High-protein and nutrient-rich, making them excellent for training.
• Easy to break into smaller pieces for portion control.
• Single-ingredient and minimally processed.
♥️ We love Vital Essentials-my dog’s favorites are the minnows & chicken hearts- I know, it’s gross but literally their favorite things in the world (my cats too)

2. Bully Sticks are great!! (You do NOT need to know what they’re made of 🫣)
• Promotes oral health by reducing plaque and tartar.
• Easier to digest.
• Available in various sizes for different breeds and chewing habits.

3. Holiday-Themed Dog Biscuits (Natural Ingredients)
• Festive and fun, but made with simple, pet-safe ingredients like peanut butter and pumpkin.
• Free from artificial additives and safe for sensitive stomachs.
• You can even find grain-free options for dogs with allergies.

🐶Is your dog a jumper? Here’s how to teach them to stay on the ground during your holiday gatherings!🎄

🐾Use Positive Reinforcement for Calm Behavior
Instead of focusing on the jumping, reward your dog for staying calm. When your dog greets you (or others) with all paws on the ground, immediately reward them with praise, treats, or pets.

✨Consistency is key
Every time your dog stays calm and doesn’t jump, reinforce that behavior. This teaches them that keeping their paws on the ground is the behavior that gets rewarded.

Redirect with a Sit Command🐕
Use the “sit” command we talked about last month: When your dog starts to jump, give a “sit” command. If your dog sits instead of jumping, reward them with a treat or affection. This gives them a clear alternative to jumping and helps them understand what’s expected during greetings.

🌟Practice before the gathering
Practice the sit command regularly in different environments, so your dog becomes more reliable at sitting when asked. When they greet people, ask them to sit first before offering attention.

🐾Ignore the Jumping (Don’t Give Attention Until Calm)
If your dog jumps on you, avoid giving any attention until they stop jumping and calm down. This helps your dog understand that jumping doesn’t get them the attention they want.

🐕‍🦺Reward calm behavior
As soon as your dog’s paws are on the ground, give positive reinforcement. This helps them learn that staying grounded is the quickest way to get your attention.

🐕Teach “Off” or “Down” as a Cue
If your dog jumps up on people, teach them the “off” or “down” command as a cue to get them back on the ground. Practice the command during calm moments and reward them when they respond correctly.

💫Be consistent
Use the “off” command consistently every time your dog jumps, so they begin to associate the word with the desired behavior.

These tips will help reinforce calm behavior during greetings and make interactions with your dog more pleasant and controlled!

🐶Holiday Pumpkin-Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Ingredients:

1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree (make sure it’s unsweetened and unspiced)
1/4 cup natural peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol)
1 egg (helps bind the dough)
1 cup oat flour (or blend regular oats to make your own)
1/2 cup rolled oats (adds texture)
1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional, but festive!)
1 tbsp honey (optional, for a touch of sweetness)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and egg. Stir well until smooth and fully mixed.
Gradually mix in the oat flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, and honey (if using). Stir until the dough comes together.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut into shapes
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and firm to the touch.

Cool down: Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog.
For longer storage, place them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or freeze them for up to 3 months.

🐾Why Your Dog Will Love These Treats:

🐶Pumpkin is rich in fiber and helps support healthy digestion.
🥜Peanut butter provides healthy fats and protein.
🥣Oats are a great source of fiber and can aid in digestion.
♥️Cinnamon (in moderation) is safe for dogs and adds a festive touch while offering anti-inflammatory benefits.
