Feline tooth resorption is a lesion in which the body breaks down part of the tooth (essentially, a hole is formed in the cat’s tooth). Although your cat may not show signs of discomfort, this is a common condition and can be very painful! Tooth resorption can be identified and treated during your cat’s annual oral exam.

This cat was diagnosed with an oral mass on the right lower jaw, next to the last molar tooth. After the initial consultation, he presented for a complete dental prophylaxis, cone beam CT scan, examination, incisional biopsy, and extractions under general anesthesia.

A biopsy was taken of the oral mass and the diagnosis was pyogenic granuloma.

Pyogenic granulomas are benign enlargements of the soft tissue that show up as solitary red tissue. We often see pyogenic granulomas next to the last lower molar as seen in this cat.

They are usually caused by repeated trauma to the area. In most cats, the repeated trauma is due to contact from the opposing 4th premolar on the upper jaw. The contact leads to inflammation, tissue enlargement, then more inflammation and more enlargement.

Treatment usually involves extracting the tooth causing the trauma and the tooth next to the mass. Biopsies are important as any oral mass in animals can be cancerous.

🐾 Fun Fact Friday: Pets Can Have "Dental Plaque Parties"! 🦷

Did you know that plaque can start to build up on your pet’s teeth within just 24 hours of brushing? This means if you skip a day or two, plaque can turn into tartar and contribute to dental disease. To keep your pet’s smile healthy, be sure to brush regularly and provide dental chews to help combat plaque buildup.

Remember, a little prevention goes a long way to avoiding a "plaque party"! 😁✨
