Training a dog, whether it’s a puppy or an older dog, begins with understanding that consistency and patience are key. Dogs thrive on routine and clear communication, so establishing a predictable schedule and using consistent commands will help your dog understand what you expect.

Though it may seem like a fun thing for kids, dogs are NOT meant to sit on. EVER!!! Please do not ever encourage a child to sit or step up on a dog. This can cause pain, fear and conflict. All can increase the chances of a dog bite.

Is your dog “tolerating” what is happening in a situation? Or is the dog really telling them they're uncomfortable and want this to stop? We encourage families to observe their dog's body language so that they can understand what their dog is telling them.

How do I know what to look for if they’re uncomfortable?
❗Half moon eyes, your dog is leaning their body away from what is going on,
❗Yawning when they aren’t tired
❗lip licking

There are many body language signals that dogs display to us if they are uncomfortable, and even if they are enjoying something. Dogs use their bodies to communicate discomfort, stress and joy. Maybe they are happy and content and come over to you while you are holding your baby and get some pets, or they are happily wagging their tail with a loose body.

Recognizing how your dog uses their body to communicate is an important way to build and strengthen bonds. Looking for more information? Tethering can be a great way to include dogs in the daily routines with newborn babies. Many caregivers feel more comfortable with their dog in their success station, especially during the Homecoming phase (the first 3 months). Caretakers are able to move around and toss treats while the dog is able to observe the baby without any type of physical barrier.

*🚧 Once a baby is able to roll, crawl, or move, a tether is no longer a safe option and should be discontinued. 🚧 *

It’s a great time to start rehearsing a few different self-pacifying games and experiences that you can offer your dog during the fireworks to support them.

A wonderful opportunity to practice one of the few golden rules of dog behavior:

If you want something to improve behavioral outcomes in the condition your dog struggles in, the approach you choose to use must already have a solid reinforcement history associated with it.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***
