Today I'd like to discuss just ONE of the reasons we recommend spaying your pets.

Doctor Riegler spayed a 10 month old dog today and after removal of the uterus and ovaries she noticed that there was an area in one of the uterine horns that was swollen. After the surgery was done, she cut into the area and it was filled with pus. Pus in the uterus is called Pyometra, which is fatal if left untreated. While the end result of pyometra surgery is a spayed dog, there is nothing routine about a pyometra spay. The surgery is challenging and the patient is in a life-threatening situation. Now this pup was at the very early stages so there was not immediate threat.
Intravenous fluid support during and after surgery are generally needed plus the patient is toxic and requires extra support. The uterus is very large and the associated blood vessels are engorged making the surgery time longer. Recovery from surgery takes longer compared to the spay of the healthy female dog. For these reasons, the pyometra spay typically costs five to ten times as much as a routine spay.

This can happen after just the first heat folks!

When a dog goes into heat, the hormonal changes cause the cervix to open. Bacteria can then invade the uterus and create the infection known as pyometra. Pyometra tends to occur in older female dogs who have experienced multiple heat cycles as well as dogs that have just had their first heat cycle.

What are symptoms of Pyometra?
Some symptoms may include....
Decreased appetite, increased thirst, larger looking abdomen, vaginal discharge, lethargy, and vomiting.

How can I prevent Pyometra?

Get your pet spayed!
