Lexi, an elderly vizsla, wandered away from her home last Thursday evening. She stayed within a few blocks from home, but wouldn't get close enough for anyone to catch her. Knowing she was close, we set up a trap for her, but the only things we trapped were a couple of annoying trash pandas.
The next day she was seen in various locations in the same neighborhood but again stayed far away from everyone. Saturday morning, Lexi was spotted almost a mile away in a very busy area. There were several people attempting to catch her by chasing after her, which only kept her running away. One of her fur siblings was brought out to try and coax her, but every time, there was a chance someone would jump in trying to help and cause her to run the other way.
With the rain and cold, she was wet and tired so she disappeared into a small wooded area where we hoped she was staying put. We decided to get the thermal drone out; the plan was to watch from above as Lexi’s owner walked through the wooded area to try and flush her out. We found a hot spot with the drone which was only a few feet into the woods.
Not knowing if it was her, we changed our plan. The new plan was to have her owner come in from the same side while the drone watched from above. While in communication with Lost K9, Lexi’s owner walked just past the image so she was directed back towards it and then spotted Lexi curled up in some leaves sleeping. Lexi’s owner decided to come out of the woods and go in from a different angle and she was able to sneak up on Lexi and drop a slip lead over her head before she woke up. She was quite startled but then realized who had her and what was going on. They walked out of the woods together and Lexi knew she was going home.
Without the thermal drone, we may not have found Lexi, and she would possibly still be out there. Sometimes it just takes the right tool or resource to help find a lost dog.
Lexi went home and slept for almost 24 hours straight. Hopefully she'll never do this again.
