I have fostered many dogs and cats in the past. These beautiful words give a bit of an idea of what it is like to bring a neglected, possibly abused and certainly discarded creature into your life. It isn't easy by any means but it fills you up when you build them up and provide them with love, allow them to learn to trust humans, and one day send them off to their new home where they will forever be loved, cared for and respected. Shelters and rescues are inundated with dogs and cats. People are giving up their pets at a remarkable rate for many reasons. If you have ever considered fostering please explore it. Locally Steele County Humane Society, Rejection Collection Boxer Rescue, Waseca County Humane Society, Mower County Humane Society, Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Humane Society of Freeborn County are just a few. They do take a bit of your heart with them when they go but providing them a bridge to a wonderful life costs you nothing financially.
I know many of you enjoy seeing pictures and the stories of my Packs, MOST of them were adopted from rescues. Without fosters they wouldn't be with us now. So please think about being that person who helps a dog, puppy, cat or kitten find their forever home. Thank you from all of us here at Critter Comforts.
Musings of a dog foster mom
Fostering is easy. You see a picture of the most unbelievable heartache. You see what evil can do. Really look. You see the eyes full of doubt, fear, anger, terror, rejection, loss or worse, empty of any hope or emotion.
You see scars, open sores, bites, fleas, infection oozing from eyes, ears and nose, you see skin and bones, mange and scabs.
And you open your heart and home because you want to make up for whatever hell that life has been through. You want to show love, to help heal, to bring light into the darkness. Baby steps. You reach to touch, they cower away. You provide food, they either gorge or don’t trust enough to eat. You offer soft beds, and they choose to sleep on the hard floor.
Slowly they learn all humans aren’t mean. They learn about couches, baths, grass, blankets, treats, toys, cuddles and love.
You watch them come alive. The oldest kid becomes a puppy because they never knew what that was before.
Then the day comes they are ready for their very own forever home. You post pictures, you go over every detail the potential new home needs. These are special kids that might need extra patience or a special vet. You don’t want to ever let this precious life worry ever again.
You pour over applications. You call references. You call the vet. You do a home visit.
Then the day comes. Your head is ready. You work out the details. You deliver this precious baby to their new home. You hug. You laugh. You take the first family photo.
Then, you turn and walk away. You can’t look back. You sit in your car and let the tears flow. You don’t regret this. You’ve simply left a huge piece of your heart with someone new.
Because you loved. You took on something that only the strong would ever do. You became a bridge from hell to heaven.
And in that moment, you loved enough to create a new family for a broken soul. And you go home, open the rescue page on Facebook, and look for the next life you will change.
Fostering is easy. You just have to take the leap.
Without foster homes, rescues could not save the number of pets they do every day. Fostering cost you nothing. Rescues cover food, all vetting, provide supplies, medications and endless resources.
They just need you. Shelters are overflowing. We fill our homes with so much that is unimportant. Maybe on this Give to the Max Day, you can fill your home with hope. Hope for a new life.
Hope to end overfilled shelters. And hope to end uncaring puppy mills.
Please sign up to become a superhero and become a foster. You can change a life, and it will change yours.
Every donation—no matter the size—makes a difference in the lives of these incredible dogs who still have so much love to give.
