A little over 6 years ago I was asked to care for Rosie and Eddie for a week or so! They ended up being my foster dogs. Eddie got adopted about 5 months later and has the very best life any little dog could ask for. Rosie was … let’s say a pill😆 She bit if she was touched wrong, I couldn’t pick her up or I would really get bit hard! As the weather got cold it was clear she needed a coat as she hated the cold. It took maybe a week or so of trying but I finally got a coat on her👏 Well…. About 5 months later I finally got that coat off of her😂 Every time I tried she wanted to rip my face off! Luckily it/she didn’t get too dirty. At this point it was clear that Rosie wasn’t really an adoptable dog but we kept trying to find an appropriate home for her. Eventually I became her forever foster. I pay for her food and treats and everything else she needs. SCHS pays for her medical. We all knew we would never get back any of the dollars put into her so to offset the cost I volunteered to pay for her needs. SCHS could have made the decision to euthanize her but out of the kindness of their hearts they let me care for her. Rosie was old when she came and we now estimate her to be 21 or 22 years of age! Considering her not so good life before she arrived, I am amazed. She truly is old now. She is blind, she can’t hear well, is on pain medication for her arthritis and she sleeps most of the time. She hasn’t come to work with me for months now. I know her time with me is short but she still has a good appetite , enjoys a stroll in the backyard 3 or 4 times a day and wags her tail when I get home. So as long as she is willing to soldier on, I will soldier with her. Sometimes living with an old dog can be trying and definitely frustrating but I made a commitment to her. Sometimes I get sad when I see her struggle a bit but when I come home and see her on her favorite bed sleeping soundly and comfortably I am happy that I can give her respect and a fairly good quality of life.
