Yesterday, we were contacted by an employee of a local farm store about a baby chick with an injured leg. They were looking to surrender the chick to a sanctuary in the hooes it would receive medical care. While we couldn't offer a forever home at HQ, we were able to connect with Briarwood Farm Sanctuary and they agreed to take the chick in! So, we ran out and picked up the little one and got them all set up in a makeshift brooder in our bathroom until we can get her/him moved to Briarwood. We're happy to report that, despite the injury, the chick is doing really well so far!

However, this little ball of feathered fluff is going to need some serious medical care that comes with some serious costs. Briarwood has already consulted with their vet and has an appointment for this little one set up. It's looking like there is a chance the injured leg will need to be amputated if it can't be set. We have no doubt this little one is a fighter and can have a long and happy life ahead! Even with just one working leg, there's no slowing them down at all!

We get a lot of interesting Superheroes visiting HQ, but today's Emu guest topped the list. He was only here long enough for us (with the help of our local sheriffs) to figure out where he lived and arrange for his owners to give him a lift home, but it was a fun visit while it lasted!

Studies show that the biggest impact each of us can make towards saving our planet doesn't require buying an electric car, walking to work, or tossing out all your single use plastics (although we encourage all of those things as well). Adopting a vegan diet provides a 76% reduction in land use for food production.

Would it be wonderful if we all stopped eating meat and dairy today? Of course! However, we recognize that's easier said than done. But you can take the first step towards a healthier and more compassionate planet today. Commit to cooking one vegan meal a week. Switch to a plant-based milk alternative next time you go to the store (we love oat milk here at HQ). Check out a local vegan restaurant next time you go out for a meal. Start small, but start.

Update on our injured Rooster Superhero Sidekick: He’s doing well and his foot seems to be healing nicely. He’s taking his meds like a champ, is able to put weight on that foot more often, and the swelling and bruising looks like it’s going down. He’s also loving the warm water foot soaks and accompanying snuggles and head scritches. We’ll be emailing the vet with an update and comparison pictures tomorrow to get her official opinion, but we’re cautiously optimistic about his recovery.

UPDATE: Rooster Sidekick is chilling out in his own secure space in the barn and took his first dose of meds relatively well (for a rooster). Total at the vet was $167.56 (pic of the invoice in comments). We’ve received a $20 donation towards that cost so far, so please consider helping if you can! Every dollar counts and is so appreciated. ❤️🐓❤️

At vet with one of our Kaporos Sidekicks. We noticed he wasn’t putting weight on one of his legs and it looks a bit swollen and bruised. He’ll be getting antibiotics and warm water soaks for that foot for a bit as well as his own accommodations while he heals. Funds are definitely tight at HQ as we prep for winter, but we’re committed to getting all our Superheroes the care they need, when they need it. We wanted to show you all how your donation dollars are hard at work as we continue to build and improve HQ. We recently decided to create a new and improved area for Jubilee & Logan. With the help of a very generous sponsor, we rented (to own) a shed for a new shelter, spread gravel and sand under it, wired it and added a heater, then moved the pigs in. They love hanging out with the Flock of Sidekicks now.

🚨NEW SUPERHEROES ALERT!🚨

October was a busy month here at HQ. Not only did we welcome Rocket & Groot, our two male calf superheroes, but we also opened our doors to Hal & Arthur, a bonded pair of drakes abandoned next to a busy highway in Long Island, NY. These guys were going by the secret identities of Simon & Schuster when they were rescued by our friends at They All Want To Live, but have revealed their Superhero identities since being at HQ as none other than Green Lantern (Hal) & Aquaman (Arthur)! They’ve settled in really well and enjoy spending as much time as possible in their own pool.

And we’re not done yet! Stayed tuned to find out who else decided to call HQ home recently!

We talk a lot about how our Superhero animals inspire us, as humans, to make more compassionate decisions when it comes to what we eat. But let’s not forget that medical experts tell us that a plant based diet has enormous health benefits for us as well. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are among diseases that have been medically proven to improve when a patient adopts a plant based diet.

Heaven got a new Superhero today and you can bet she showed up wearing the most fabulous cape. Rest in peace, Esther the Wonder Pig. Thank you for being you and inspiring so many. We love you. ❤️🐷❤️

Hello, everybody.

There’s no easy way to say this, but the day we all wished would never come has arrived. Esther has passed away. She was calm and peaceful, and fell asleep with her dad Steve by her side.

While we understand many of you will have questions, and we will have the answers for you , but we are going to take a little break to process the situation.

Even though Esther is no longer physically with us, her memory and legacy will live forever. Esther is immortal, and we will continue to show the world that all animals deserve to be loved just like she was.

Sending love and happy thoughts to each and every one of you. We know you all loved her just as much as we did, and we thank you for that.

“Dairy” cows don’t just produce milk all the time. This is probably the biggest misconception we run into and the biggest shock to people when we talk about it. In truth, just like human mothers, a female bovine (cow) has to have given birth to produce milk. It’s simple biology. Milk from a cow isn’t meant for humans any more than human milk is meant for calves.

Recently, there’s been some comments on some of our social media posts accusing HFS of spreading false information. While we’ve certainly donned our insult-deflecting Superhero capes, we wanted to take a minute to reiterate what our mission is at HFS.

Our goal has always and will always be to share facts and information about the harm Factory Farming has on animals, the planet, and humanity. We aim to empower people with knowledge that is otherwise not readily known due to actual misinformation and deceptive marketing & propaganda. We always provide sources to every fact we share on our Tuesday Truth posts and try to use reliable, unbiased sources whenever possible (the fact below was actually sited from a dairy industry website). We try to spread our message by sharing stories about our rescued Superhero animals because most people have only interacted with pigs, cows, chickens, etc via their dinner plate. Plus, each of our Superheroes are pretty special, entertaining, and we’re proud of them.

What we will never do is use shame or guilt or insults to achieve our mission. Nor will we engage with them. The information we share was once new to us too and we know how hard it can be to process harm you may have unknowingly caused. Plus, it’s just not the Superhero way.

If you have any questions, concerns, or just need some support in your own journey for Truth, Justice, and the Plant-Based Way, we are always here to lend a hand and a cape. 🦸🏻‍♀️ 🦸🦸🏽‍♂️
