The forecast is in: a big winter storm is bearing down on Kentucky. For most of us, that means a trip to the grocery store to grab the usual staples—bread, milk, and eggs. After all, what’s an ice storm without the legendary milk sandwich?
Keeping our families warm and safe in the face of possible power outages and freezing temperatures are of utmost importance. But while we’re bundling up and preparing to hunker down, Kentucky farmers are gearing up in an entirely different way.
Out in the fields, barns, and pastures, our farmers are working tirelessly to prepare for whatever Mother Nature has in store. Livestock need shelter, fresh bedding, and extra feed to stay warm through freezing temperatures. Crops must be protected from frost, and equipment has to be checked and ready for use in emergency situations. Even frozen water lines and icy roads won’t stop their commitment to keeping their farms running smoothly.
For Kentucky’s farmers, there’s no such thing as a snow day. They’re out there ensuring their animals are cared for, their land is tended to, and their operations are ready to keep feeding our families—even in the harshest conditions.
As we all prepare to face the challenges this storm may bring, let’s take a moment to think about the hands behind your milk, bread, and eggs. Those hands are calloused from hard work, braving icy winds and frigid nights, all to make sure we stay fed and nourished.
And let’s not forget those who may face a tough road ahead without power or heat. Check on your neighbors, lend a helping hand, and share if you can. Together, we’ll weather this storm. Stay safe and warm out there, Kentucky. ❄️
