This is an actual event that happened to a good friend of ours, Its most definitely worth the read especially with our hotter than hell temps.
Feeling so very thankful today ! We had a medical emergency this weekend with Norman….it happened so fast as if a light switch had just flipped…even though Norman is an indoor dog and very pampered, with the high temps we have had, just going outdoors for a very short time period for potty etc, he evidently was not drinking enough extra water to compensate for the temps.. Dogs do not have sweat glands and cannot sweat so they pant to help cool down.
He evidently had a cumulative situation that hit him in a flash early Sunday morning and we were so afraid it was not going to be a good ending….the vet and and us decided it would be too traumatic to try to transport him since he is older and could not walk, so, for all Sunday, all Sunday night and yesterday, I continually gave small amounts of unflavored pedialyte and water in a small bowl by his bedside 24/7….also did cooling blankets etc…. He is now eating and up on his own and getting back to his old self!
If you have a pet, cats or dogs…..please make sure they get more water than normal in these temps even if you have to intentionally offer it to them….brush them to remove excess fur so it does not add more heat…pedialyte is perfectly fine to supplement to dogs ( ask vet for cats) in hot weather…don’t exceed the recommended amount for a child… ( 1-2 liters within 24 hr period)put a large hand towel wetted down in cold water on their neck down their back after they come inside from a hot day…you can turn a fan on them to cool them quicker to….just a few preventative tips so you can be ahead of the situation. I would not want anyone to go through this scary situation ! Still keeping a close eye on our sweet boy but think for sure we are out of the danger zone now❤️Note…make sure Pedlyte is unflavored!
