As winter ensues and spring is on the horizon, we all witness countless inquiries on “when to start my horse?”.

And DAMN that’s a loaded question.

I first like to ask if you have a deadline, meaning stallion testing, Mare performance test, selling purposes… those aspects put timelines on your end goal no doubt. 

Next question is, can you properly start this horse? And then is your goal for breeding, selling, or personal benefit?

I am a believer (as a breeder) for handling foals from day one, and handling horses properly in general, that is the only way that a horse succeeds no matter their purpose and no matter their age. This is the route to proper initial training and to cases of rehabilitation.

So when you go to ask if your horse is “ready” to start, ask yourself if you (or whoever is laying the groundwork) have given them the ability to answer the next question.

Stallion spa day!

It always amazes me here at Inner Balance Therapy the horses who like more stimulation and/or deeper work. Usually it’s the stoic and extremely intense horses, but Cruz surprises me with his want for stronger and deeper therapy considering he wears his heart on his sleeve. Regardless it’s always rewarding with every client, even my own horses!!! ❤️❤️❤️

****I will edit the below quote to say just working with horses is tough, the young ones actually IMHO are more honest and easier UNTIL they are lied to repeatedly…. Those that you try to work with after being lied to are the toughest. ****

“Working with young horses is tough.

And not just in the "hold on and hope you stay in the saddle" kind of way.

No one warns you how challenging it truly is. How often you'll doubt yourself, wondering: Am I doing this right? Am I moving too fast? Too slow? Is this too much? Not enough? You'll constantly be questioning your approach, trying to figure out the best way forward while tuning out the opinions of the trainer down the road or the livery next door, who throws judgmental glances every time you do groundwork.

No one tells you how, on some days, you'll feel like you're failing. You'll question if this horse would be better off with someone else, convincing yourself you're either wasting their potential or outright ruining them. After all, there are four-year-olds excelling in young horse classes while yours is still struggling to trot in a straight line.

No one tells you how attached you'll become. This horse is your baby, maybe one you helped bring into the world. Every setback feels personal, like a wound to your heart. You care so deeply about their well-being that it physically hurts when things go wrong. You’ll also become fiercely protective—God help anyone who dares to criticize your horse.

No one tells you how humbling, even brutal, these horses can be. They'll expose every weakness you have and practically shout it from the rooftops. While they are forgiving, they have a way of knocking you down a peg, reminding you there's always more work to be done.

No one tells you how these horses will change you. They'll force you to look inwards, to question everything you thought you knew. If you thought you had everything figured out, this horse will quickly show you that you don't. But they'll also ignite in you a fierce determination to prove everyone wrong and show them what you saw in this horse from the very beginning.

No one quite tells you how difficult young horses can be, but anyone who's been through it knows...

As tough as they are, they’re absolutely worth it.

The best part to come from the Olympics is I feel like you learn you can pick up something at any age, or any point of your life, and still excel… just because you didn’t do it when you were young, doesn’t mean you can’t become a champion at it later.

And I will make a note that every athlete is just breathtakingly beautiful and I truly believe it’s because they are just glowing with health, happiness, inspiration, and support.

Sooo… in the end do what you love, no matter when you find out what that is! 😎😎❤️❤️

You cannot fear movement.

If you want to ride successfully, train horses with direction, and help the horse think correctly and safely… then you cannot fear movement.

Movement is thought. It is effort.

The CORRECT movement is what you strive for, just any movement will not do.

But movement is always better than stagnation or paralysis (mentally or physically).

Happy to officially state the 2nd black dot of the season is at 28d and a solid heartbeat! This is meant to be a keeper foal, and I am so blessed to have been able to get this mare in my program (who already has one Grand Prix Jumper son under her belt) let alone hopefully get her to term successfully again! She is worth it!!!

It was at the end of a typical 5am show day, I was red faced, sweaty, and frizzy hair galore... but damn it if Bethany P Photography wasn't up for the challenge and NAILED IT. Cruz always falls asleep in my arms when I brush his face, and so I wanted a "candid" of this special moment we have everyday.... I couldn't be more in love with these!!!
