Ember IS a superhero!! This dog keeps smiling even in the face of adversity! What she has gone thru and survived ….

•Found as a stray many years ago, no family to want her or come to claim her
•Belly full of babies that she birthed at a crowded shelter, cared for, and then watched get adopted as she stayed behind.
• Finally found her perfect match, her human dad who adopted her, and spent six of the best years of her life with him before he passed away. She once again lost the only family she had.
• Came back to the shelter where she has sat for more than a year, waiting for somebody to understand that she’s not a bad dog… She’s just a scared, nervous dog. She doesn’t know what these new people are going to do to her. She’s been let down so many times before that she keeps her guard up until she can trust you.
•And yet, YET, she still is such a good girl. She displays no signs of depression in her kennel. She is not destructive. She doesn’t do the things that dogs do when they’re going "kennel crazy"… no Spinning, chewing on herself, cowering. She doesn’t have accidents in her kennel. She sits and waits, every day just waiting, and still eagerly greets “her people” when they come to let her out.

She just keeps overcoming. She keeps pushing through. She keeps having successes. She’s had her share of failures, who can blame her. The next and most important success story she needs is her second chance at a home ❤️

We talk all the time about Ember… She’s an amazing senior girl that has roadblocks to her finding a home. She doesn’t like other animals and is wary of strangers, she takes some time to warm up to people. But she’s not just a one person dog as these pictures clearly show. Ember has a large group of people in her circle of trust… and the photos on this collage aren’t even everyone. She loves her people, and if you give her a chance like everyone here did…she will love you too ❤️

(be sure to hop on our page tomorrow to get more of Ember’s story and more pictures from her photo sessions!)

Check out this pic of Ember and the date at the top…October 2015 🥹 It was Ember’s “Freedom Ride” from her first adoption many years ago. Her personality was the same then as it is now (wary of strangers, doesn’t like other animals). BUT there was a gentleman who saw in Ember what the rest of us saw… And decided she was worth several meet and greets to win her trust. He wasn’t disappointed, and they became the best of friends. They did everything together. Unfortunately he passed away and Ember had to come back to the shelter. Ember is older now, she’s a bit slower now, but she still has that same sparkle her human dad saw in her years ago when he took her home ❤️

Ember is ready for her second and hopefully final freedom ride. Perhaps that ride could be with you!

Say hello to our black beauties!!

Just look at their gorgeous, shiny coats and warm brown eyes. Our black dogs may not be as “flashy” as their light coated counterparts, but their capacity to love is just as big.

Every single dog pictured here is just waiting for their forever family to notice their sparkling personality and good looks. We think black dogs are the BEST!

If you see someone that catches your eye, head on over to our website at www.shspets.org to fill out an adoption profile. Don’t make them wait another minute to start their happily ever after.

Nice to meet you Hulk!

This gorgeous boy is about 8 years old and he sure hopes he finds his forever on the last day of our BISSELL Pet Foundation Valentine’s Day adoption event!

Hulk has great house manners, knows his basic commands, loves people and would prefer to be an only pet.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of Cathy Bissell and the BISSELL Pet Foundation, you can adopt any animal that is 5 months or older for just $14, but today is the LAST DAY! Give us a call to come out and meet the love of your life!

If you interested or have questions please contact the shelter at 989-723-4262. Thanks

We have some pretty awesome pets looking for their forever!

If you are looking to add to your family and are ready to make a 15ish year commitment to care for your new furry family member, the holidays might be a great time to adopt. Many families have quiet time at home and extra days off work/school to help a new pet adjust this time of year. You can view all of our adoptable animals at www.shspets.org.

Our staff will be happy to help you make a plan for a successful transition from shelter to HOME!
