Josh's Frogs is an inspiring story of success from humble beginnings. It was all started in 2004 by Joshua Willard, a former pastor, dart frog hobbyist and vivarium enthusiast. Josh made flightless fruit fly cultures to serve as feeder insects for his poison dart frogs. From his apartment, he started selling the extra, pre-made fruit fly cultures as well as supplies for kits so others could make t

heir own. After moving to a house, Josh utilized the space in his garage, where he expanded in selling other products as well and hiring his first couple of employees. His dedication to customer service and quality supplies quickly led to a growing success. In 2009, the company moved to its 1st facility in Corunna, Michigan, where it only employed about 4 people but continued to grow. With the extra space, we were able to bring plant propagation, care, and shipping in-house and were able to carry a full line of live plants for dart frog vivaria. We continued to expand our product selection and further develop our own product line, but we quickly began to run out of space! In 2013, Josh's Frogs moved into a 37,000 square foot, 5-story warehouse in Owosso, Michigan where we currently reside and employ over 100 people. We’re now the largest online retailer of reptile and amphibian products as well as the largest breeder of captive bred dart frogs in the United States, and probably the world. We’ve utilized this large space to greatly increase the now even wider variety of live plants, animals, and feeder insects that we offer. However, being the leaders in the industry, we are trusted as a hub of helpful information via our website, blogs, videos on our YouTube channel, and other social media. Our knowledgeable staff is always willing to help in any way that we can. The following philosophies drive our business:

Most pet reptiles and amphibians love to eat live insects, and most live feeder insects should be dusted with a quality vitamin and mineral supplement. Providing these supplements is very important to keep your pets healthy. In the wild, these animals would be eating a wide variety of different food items - something we are incapable of replicating in captivity. By dusting prey items with a vitamin or mineral supplement, we're doing what we can to ensure our pet's diet is nutritious and well rounded.

At just ¾ of an inch, these adorable Blue Back Reed Froglets are almost fully grown! Females can reach up to 1.5 inches, while males stay closer to 1 inch in size. Native to Madagascar, the Blue Back Reed Frog (Heterixalus madagascariensis) is found nowhere else in the world! Their stunning coloration and patterns can vary depending on individual frogs, age, gender, and even light exposure. At night, these little frogs become more pale as they spring into action to find food and mates. How cool is that? These frogs make great pets and can live anywhere from 3-5 years in captivity. They also thrive in groups, so be sure to pick up a few when purchasing!

The Thai Golden Fringed Tarantula, known scientifically as Ornithoctonus aureotibialis, is an uncommon tarantula that definitely deserves a bit more attention. This Thai beauty from the tropical rainforests of Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia is rarely seen in its native range. That's because it's an inveterate burrow dweller that only leaves its burrow if it's been destroyed or it happens to be a mature male. This gorgeous tarantula looks like it's reflecting golden light off its front legs. You might not see this beauty out of its home much, but when you do, it's all worth it!! 😍

This is a Dendrobates tinctorius 'Alalapadu Cobalt' Albino Dart Frog. It's amazing how intricate these frogs' patterns are when you get to see them up close. When bred with a normal blue and yellow Alalapadu Cobalt, you'll often get a range of both the albino and normal phenotypes.

🐜🕷️ Many people are afraid of insects, but did you know that we couldn’t survive without them? And I'm not just talking about the honey bees; insects like wasps, cockroaches, and even mosquitoes play essential roles in our ecosystem too! Sure, they might bug us 😄, but every other animal and plant we love depends on their presence. If insects were to vanish, our environment would spiral into chaos! It’s a mind-boggling thought, especially considering that if all of humanity disappeared, the Earth would return to the balanced state it enjoyed thousands of years ago. Despite our technological advances, life as we know it would grind to a halt without these little critters. Why is that? The reasons are both simple and complex. For one, almost all insects are essential pollinators and act as nature's cleanup crew! Without them, countless plants, including those that produce our food, wouldn’t be able to reproduce, and dead plants and animals would pile up without insects to break them down. 🚮 Think about this: in the rainforests of central Africa, all the insects together weigh more than all the vertebrates combined! 🐘🦍🐍 Imagine that… these tiny creatures surpass the mass of all the forest’s elephants, gorillas, birds, reptiles, and other animals with backbones. 🏋️‍♂️ It’s a powerful reminder of how vital insects are in keeping our ecosystems balanced, from pollinating flowers to cleaning up the forest floor. 🧡 That’s why, at Josh’s Frogs, we take special care to ensure that no insect or animal is ever released back into the wild.🚫 This helps protect natural ecosystems from disruptions and keeps local wildlife safe. Josh's Frogs strives to connect people with nature and strongly believes that the keeping and breeding of animals in captivity should have a direct, positive link to wild populations. We've put this theory into action with our Josh's Frogs Conservation Initiatives. Through direct partnerships with key conservation players, every animal sold results in money going directly to conservation in the field, and we provide annual grants to support these initiatives. We're determined to make a difference! Our commitment to conservation doesn’t end there! We’re proud to offer programs like the Josh’s Frogs Amphibian Conservation Grant, which helps protect rainforests and the amazing species that live there. 🐸🌳

Although most species of tarantula have one consistent look throughout each species, there are some that come in different varieties. Today we will look at the Trinidad Olive Tarantula, known scientifically as Neoholothele incei. This gorgeous dwarf species from the dry scrublands of Trinidad, Venezuela, and the Caribbean actually comes in two color forms. The original is a classic, the Trinidad Olive Tarantula has a metallic pale green hue as an adult female. There is also the Trinidad Olive Tarantula Gold Form, which, as it sounds, has a shiny golden hue. Here we see two adult females that live here at Josh’s Frogs. We call them Frick (the Gold) and Frack (the Olive). They are heavy webbers and it is not difficult to see why they are so popular. Under the correct conditions, this species can be kept communally.

There are two very popular species of Tarantulas, kept as pets, that are very easy to confuse. These are the Mexican Red Knee Tarantula and the Mexican Giant Orange Knee Tarantula. Brachypelma smithi was first described in 1897. However, in 1994, a man named A. M. Smith redescribed the species using two adult specimens that actually belonged to B. hamorii. B. hamorii was first described, years later, in 1997 by Marc Tesmoingt, Frédéric Cleton, and Jean Verdez. In 2017, J. Mendoza and O. Francke used DNA barcoding to clarify the distinction between the two species. They found that the two species have different DNA barcodes and can be distinguished by other morphological features. Here are some of those visible morphological differences, to help us hobbyists tell the difference. On the left is Brachypelma hamorii. On the right, Brachypelma smithi. In the first picture, you can see the front of the tarantulas showing the leg pattern differences. On B. hamorii, there is only red on the “knee segment” (patella). The rest of the segments are cream colored. On B smithi, the red/orange can be seen on each of the lighter colored bands. The second picture shows the top (carapace) of the tarantulas' central body segment. On B hamorii, the carapace is dark, with a red ring along the outermost edge. On B smithi we see that the majority of the carapace is red with a dark triangle over the eye mound. The third picture shows the sides of the patellas of the number one (first towards the front) leg pairs. On B hamorii, the color is only on the top of the patella. It has black on the sides and bottom of that leg segment. On B smithi, the color is completely across the sides of their patellas, with no black visible from the side or above. Hopefully this can help you differentiate between two awesome and popular Tarantulas!
