Equine Dentistry Proper dental work performed by an experienced equine veterinarian is an important part of a horse?

Dr. Cawiezell graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1975 with a Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology. After obtaining a Master's Degree in Parasitology from UW in 1978, he attended vet school at Colorado State University, graduating in 1982. Dr. Cawiezell has operated a mixed practice in western Nebraska & Eastern Wyoming until 2008, when he began to emphasize an equine-only practice. He relocated to central Nebraska in 2020 to specialize in dentistry.

All horses need at least an annual dental check with floating and routine care. Even horses on pasture are at a disadvantage if improper alignment, especially of the incisors, interferes with normal grazing and chewing.

There was a recently diagnosed case of rabies in a horse in northern Nebraska. Vaccination against rabies in the horse is an effective means of preventing the disease. A horse is usually infected with rabies from the bite of an infected animal; most usually a skunk. All horses should have annual boosters. This vaccine must be given by a vet.

Prior to moving to south-central Nebraska, I was located near Lingle, Wyoming and had a full-service equine veterinary practice. Since moving to Nebraska, I have concentrated my efforts towards providing dental care for my equine patients. Providing proper dental care for horses continues to be my focus in my practice.
