Our mission is to save dogs from overpopulated shelters and areas across the southern parts of the United States. We are dedicated to finding quality, loving, committed forever homes for each animal we bring into our care and provide a better future for them and our adopters. We follow a comprehensive adoption process which includes an extensive adoption application to find a good match and educat

ing prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives. All dogs in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all age appropriate vaccinations and proper veterinary care prior to going to their new home. We have a wonderful foster base to help house, train and love our dogs while they await to find their perfect humans. We assist dogs in need without regards to age, breed, or ease of placement and we strive to keep our operating costs low so that funds brought into our rescue go directly back into the care of our animals and our mission to save more.

🚨 KEVIN SURGERY UPDATE — WE NEED YOUR HELP 🚨

We just left Kevin’s surgery consult, and our vet was incredibly kind with his estimate… which means we are SO close to making this happen for him. 💙

👉 We only need to raise another $2,500 before December 16th for Kevin to get the surgery he desperately needs.
👉 Without the funds up front, we cannot move forward — and Kevin can barely walk. 💔

This sweet boy survives every day in pain, and we are fighting hard to give him the chance at a pain-free life he deserves. If you’re able to donate, no matter the amount, it truly makes a difference. 🙏🐾

💙 THIS GIVING TUESDAY * HELP KEVIN WALK AGAIN 💙

This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking our community to rally behind one incredibly special boy — Kevin.

Kevin has survived more heartbreak than most dogs ever will. After a devastating hip injury and surgery in Texas, he finally made his way to Maine… only for us to learn he is once again fighting for his ability to simply stand without pain.

Kevin now has a torn cruciate and a luxating patella.
Every step hurts. Every shift of weight sends pain shooting through his NOT so tiny body. 💔

His surgery will cost over $7,500, and after a year filled with medical emergencies, our medical fund is completely depleted. We have raised about $3,000 of his surgery cost already but have a long way to go still!
Kevin deserves to live without suffering — and the only way he gets that chance is with your help.

🐾 This Giving Tuesday, you can change Kevin’s entire future.

Your donation, no matter the amount, brings him one step closer to the pain-free life he’s been fighting so hard to reach.

Kevin has held on through fear, travel, heartbreak, and overwhelming pain — but he still believes in people.

Thank you for helping us give Kevin the safe, pain-free life he has fought so hard to reach. 💙🐾🙏

Meet Jafar — Your Little Diamond in the Rough!

📍 Oxford, Maine
Approx. 8 months old

Jafar is a foster pup with Miles To Freedom Animal Rescue, and he’s searching for a very special forever home — one filled with patience, kindness, and the understanding that shy dogs bloom beautifully when given time. 🌼

This sweet little guy needs a family who will let him settle in at his own pace. Once he feels safe? He is the cutest, most affectionate little lovebug. His foster says he listens incredibly well and truly wants to please. 🥹💕

⭐ What Jafar Brings to the Table:

• Kennel trained and potty trained
• Knows “sit” and is working on “stay”
• Dog-friendly — loves other dogs and learns from them
• Cat-friendly — respectful once comfortable
• Sweet, gentle, loyal, and sensitive
• A total little character once he feels at home

Because he gains confidence by following other dogs’ lead, Jafar would thrive in a home with another dog — but he can be an only pup if his humans are patient and nurturing. 💛

👨‍👩‍👧 Kids?

He’s unsure around children, so he would do best in a home with kids 12+ who have dog experience and understand calm approaches with nervous pups.

🌟 Jafar’s Ideal Home:

✔️ Quiet, patient, and slow-paced
✔️ A family who will give him time to warm up
✔️ Preferably another friendly dog for confidence
✔️ A gentle environment where he can feel safe

Once he trusts you, he becomes your little shadow, eager to follow your lead and melt into your arms. He’s truly a hidden gem waiting for his person. ✨

This Thanksgiving, we’ve been slowing down a bit to look around and really take in how lucky we are — and it all circles back to you (our network).

To everyone who follows along, donates, shares our posts, volunteers their time, opens their home, or adopts one of our dogs… we truly couldn’t do any of this without you.

You help us show these animals what kindness feels like. You help us give them safety, healing, and new beginnings. And the dogs? Their happy tail wags, goofy smiles, and quiet moments of trust are all because people like you believe in them.

So from all of us at Miles To Freedom — and from every animal who has been given a second chance — thank you.

We’re extra grateful for you this Thanksgiving. 💛🐾🦃

**************************************************

Many of you know that back in March, Lucille and I took a trip to Texas to meet our new rescue partners at Fort Worth Animal Care & Control. While we were there, we met the most amazing dogs… but one stood out in a way neither of us can put into words. There was something about him—something special, something grounding—that stopped us both in our tracks.

His shelter name was Corky. His foster later renamed him Kevin.
And so, world… meet our big boy Corky Kevin. 💙

From the moment we walked him, we noticed he had an odd gait—stiff, limping, clearly uncomfortable. We asked for X-rays on the spot, and the shelter staff kindly accommodated. We sent those films to our vet here in Maine as well as had their vet review them. The news broke our hearts.

Kevin needed an FHO (femoral head osteotomy), a surgery where the head and neck of the femur are removed to relieve severe pain caused by a damaged or diseased hip. His injury likely happened long before he entered the shelter system back in January.

The cost of an FHO in Maine is upwards of $5,000+. It was not a medical expense we could take on at the time… which meant we could not bring Kevin home with us. And leaving him behind felt like leaving a piece of ourselves in Texas.

We never stopped thinking about him.
Did he make it out? Was he safe? Was he loved? Was he getting the care he desperately needed?

Fast forward to August 2025—months later—when I received a text from our southern partners:
“Kevin had his hip surgery today and is doing well in recovery. We’d still love to send him to Maine once he heals.”

Lucille and I cried. Truly cried.
Until you meet this boy in person, you cannot understand the way he grabs your heart.

Kevin arrived in Maine on Friday, 11/12/2025. We immediately noticed something was very wrong. He could barely walk. At first, we assumed stiffness from the long transport… but after two days with no improvement and clear discomfort when we manipulated his legs, we knew we had to dig deeper.

This week Kevin saw our vet for further assessment and new X-rays—and the news was devastating.

💙 Kevin now needs a rear cruciate ligament repair and a luxating patella repair.
With Kevin weighing over 110 lbs, he is not a candidate for a simple lateral tie procedure. He will require metal plates, screws, and a very lengthy, restricted recovery. This dog cannot catch a break.

This surgery will cost $5,500–$7,500, and our medical fund is literally empty.
This is not a “want.”
This is not optional.
Kevin cannot live a pain-free, functional life without this surgery.

And we need your help.

To support Kevin, we are launching a special apparel fundraiser with Maine St. Supply Co.
➡️ $10 from every item ordered will go directly toward Kevin’s medical costs.
Orders placed BEFORE 12/10/2025 should be delivered before Christmas, all other orders cannot be guaranteed delivery before the holiday. The link to order is at the bottom of this post.

Thank you for loving him already.
Thank you for helping us give him the future he deserves.
