Miles To Freedom Animal Rescue Miles To Freedom Animal Rescue is a non-profit, no kill animal rescue organization. Our mission is t

Our mission is to save dogs from overpopulated shelters and areas across the southern parts of the United States. We are dedicated to finding quality, loving, committed forever homes for each animal we bring into our care and provide a better future for them and our adopters. We follow a comprehensive adoption process which includes an extensive adoption application to find a good match and educat

ing prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives. All dogs in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all age appropriate vaccinations and proper veterinary care prior to going to their new home. We have a wonderful foster base to help house, train and love our dogs while they await to find their perfect humans. We assist dogs in need without regards to age, breed, or ease of placement and we strive to keep our operating costs low so that funds brought into our rescue go directly back into the care of our animals and our mission to save more.

💛🐾 Jafar: The Nervous Noodle With a Heart of Gold 🐾💛
This boy isn’t just “another puppy”—he is a whole personality, a quirky little soul who just needs the right people to finally feel safe, understood, and loved.

At 7 months old, Jafar is a sweet, cautious, wiggly mix who gives major Dobby vibes 🧦🐶 — big eyes, soft heart, and a look that says, “I want to trust you… just give me a minute.”

💞 His Heart

Jafar wants so badly to love and be loved.
He adores belly rubs, cuddle time, and being near his person once he feels secure. His recall is amazing, and when you call “Jafar!” he comes running with that little hopeful trot that melts you instantly.

🧍‍♂️ Men? He Tries—He Really Does

Jafar can be leery of men and needs time, patience, and gentleness.
He’s still unsure around his foster’s partner, Colby—sometimes he’ll approach when he’s sitting, but if Colby moves or leans forward, Jafar gets startled and retreats.
This isn’t aggression—it’s fear.
And fear can be healed with kindness and consistency. ❤️‍🩹

🐾 Other Animals

He truly shines with other dogs. He watches them, copies them, and uses their confidence to build his own.
He could be an only dog, but he will absolutely thrive with a calm, friendly pup to show him the ropes.
He’s fantastic with cats—curious, playful, but respectful when they say “no thank you.”

💼 His Quirks (and we love them!)

• Startles easily and will bark at people or movement outside — classic dachshund/corgi watchdog energy
• Circles around your legs on walks when nervous (prepare for a little tango)
• A chewer in the kennel — blankets and beds don’t stand a chance 😢 so for safety, he only has his tray
• Looks exactly like Dobby and nobody can tell us otherwise
• Loves love more than anything

❤️ The Truth

Jafar is the kind of dog who will bloom beautifully in the right home.
He needs patience, gentleness, a confident dog friend would help, and an adopter who understands that scared dogs aren’t “broken” — they’re simply waiting for someone to show them the world isn’t out to hurt them.

He’s sweet.
He’s quirky.
He’s trying so hard to be brave.
And he deserves a family who will see past the fear and fall in love with the heart underneath.

We are still needing to raise funds for Kevin’s surgery. We cannot do his surgery until we have raised all we need! Any and all donations are so incredibly appreciated for this sweet guy

Many of you know that back in March, Lucille and I took a trip to Texas to meet our new rescue partners at Fort Worth Animal Care & Control. While we were there, we met the most amazing dogs… but one stood out in a way neither of us can put into words. There was something about him—something special, something grounding—that stopped us both in our tracks.

His shelter name was Corky. His foster later renamed him Kevin.
And so, world… meet our big boy Corky Kevin. 💙

From the moment we walked him, we noticed he had an odd gait—stiff, limping, clearly uncomfortable. We asked for X-rays on the spot, and the shelter staff kindly accommodated. We sent those films to our vet here in Maine as well as had their vet review them. The news broke our hearts.

Kevin needed an FHO (femoral head osteotomy), a surgery where the head and neck of the femur are removed to relieve severe pain caused by a damaged or diseased hip. His injury likely happened long before he entered the shelter system back in January.

The cost of an FHO in Maine is upwards of $5,000+. It was not a medical expense we could take on at the time… which meant we could not bring Kevin home with us. And leaving him behind felt like leaving a piece of ourselves in Texas.

We never stopped thinking about him.
Did he make it out? Was he safe? Was he loved? Was he getting the care he desperately needed?

Fast forward to August 2025—months later—when I received a text from our southern partners:
“Kevin had his hip surgery today and is doing well in recovery. We’d still love to send him to Maine once he heals.”

Lucille and I cried. Truly cried.
Until you meet this boy in person, you cannot understand the way he grabs your heart.

Kevin arrived in Maine on Friday, 11/12/2025. We immediately noticed something was very wrong. He could barely walk. At first, we assumed stiffness from the long transport… but after two days with no improvement and clear discomfort when we manipulated his legs, we knew we had to dig deeper.

This week Kevin saw our vet for further assessment and new X-rays—and the news was devastating.

💙 Kevin now needs a rear cruciate ligament repair and a luxating patella repair.
With Kevin weighing over 110 lbs, he is not a candidate for a simple lateral tie procedure. He will require metal plates, screws, and a very lengthy, restricted recovery. This dog cannot catch a break.

This surgery will cost $5,500–$7,500, and our medical fund is literally empty.
This is not a “want.”
This is not optional.
Kevin cannot live a pain-free, functional life without this surgery.

And we need your help.

To support Kevin, we are launching a special apparel fundraiser with Maine St. Supply Co.
➡️ $10 from every item ordered will go directly toward Kevin’s medical costs.
Orders placed BEFORE 12/10/2025 should be delivered before Christmas, all other orders cannot be guaranteed delivery before the holiday. The link to order is at the bottom of this post.

Thank you for loving him already.
Thank you for helping us give him the future he deserves.

💛 Sultan — the Boy Who’s Never Truly Been Loved… Until Now 💛
1.5 years • 30 lbs • Mixed Breed

Sultan hasn’t had an easy start.
He’s the kind of dog who watches the world quietly… waiting to see if someone will finally choose him. 🥺

But the moment he feels safe?
He melts — gently pressing his head into your hands, offering the softest little tail wags, hoping you won’t stop. He’s shy, yes… but underneath is a heart that’s been waiting his whole life to open up.

Sultan is:
✨ Sweet, sensitive, and so deserving
✨ Crate trained & house trained
✨ Quick to warm up with kindness
✨ Ready for a home that will never let him down again

He’s not asking for much — just a safe place to land, a soft bed, and a family who’ll love him the way he’s always loved in silence.

If you’re looking for a dog who will adore you with his whole heart…
Sultan is waiting.

🧓🐶 2 Bonded Seniors Looking for Their Forever Retirement Home! 🐶👵

Meet Cash & Nova — the sweetest golden-year pair you’ll ever meet!

🏡 These two lifelong buddies are searching for a quiet, loving home where they can spend their days napping, strolling, and soaking up affection from their people.

💙 Cash – 8 years old, gentle male
He’s a sweetheart who just needs a little extra support with his potty schedule. Cash thrives with regular outside breaks every 4–5 hours. He’s affectionate and loves being near his humans.

💜 Nova – 9 years old, lovely female
This girl is as easy as they come — completely house trained, calm, and incredibly sweet. She’s the perfect companion for quiet days and cozy nights.

✨ Why They’re Searching for a New Home
Their dad started a demanding new job, and these two are spending more hours alone than seniors should. They deserve companionship, comfort, and someone who’s home more often to enjoy life with them.

🌼 What They’re Looking For
• A calm home
• People who are around more often
• A comfy couch and soft dog beds
• Strolls, snuggles, and lots of love
• A family who sees the beauty in seniors

Cash and Nova are affectionate, people-loving, mellow souls who simply want to be treasured for the rest of their days. 💕

If you think your home is the perfect place for this bonded pair, apply today at www.milestofreedomanimalrescue.org 🐾💛

🎸 Meet James Taylor 🎸

DOB: 10/10/2019

Gentle, mellow, and oh-so-loving — James Taylor is ready to find his forever duet partner!

💛 About James:
• Mostly house trained and fully crate trained
• Sometimes barks when left alone, but learning that treats = “I’ll be back soon!”
• Lives comfortably with medium and large dogs — calm, neutral, and easygoing play style
• Can be shy at first meet, but warms up quickly and loves attention
• Walks nicely on leash (still working on not jumping when excited!)
• Moderate energy — prefers snuggles and quiet time over wild play sessions

⚠️ Important Note:
James Taylor is an escape artist extraordinaire!
His foster mom checked every inch of the yard, but he still found a tiny crack under a gate and made a break for it. Another time, he managed to slip through a barely open storm door to chase adventure — with his foster mom running after him in her bathrobe and slippers! 😅
He’s smart, quick, and clever, so a secure, fully fenced yard and vigilant supervision at doors are absolute musts. The good news? Offer him a cookie and he’ll stop in his tracks! 🍪

This sweetheart has a gentle soul and loves being near his people. Whether it’s a walk, a nap, or a cozy movie night, James Taylor just wants to be part of your rhythm.

🐾 William Joel

Age: 7 years
Weight: 11 pounds
Gender: Neutered male

Meet William Joel — a pint-sized gentleman with a big heart and a playful streak! 💛

William Joel gets along beautifully with dogs of all ages and sizes and absolutely loves children. He hasn’t met any cats yet, but given his gentle, easygoing nature, we think he’d adjust just fine.

He’s mostly house trained and prefers the comfort of a soft bed over a crate — it’s safe to say crating just isn’t his thing. 😅

This little guy is also quite the character — he’s a self-proclaimed klepto who loves to “borrow” socks and small treasures! If you try to take them back, the game of chase begins, and you’ll both end up laughing. 🧦💨 Don’t worry though — William Joel is never destructive. He simply loves to gather his favorite finds and make life a little more fun.

Because he thinks open doors might lead to adventure, William Joel will need a secure, fenced-in yard to keep him safe while he enjoys his playful outdoor time.

If you’re looking for a loving, silly, and gentle companion who will fill your home with laughter and love, William Joel may just be your perfect match. 🐶💕
