With the number of cases increasing daily on the east coast, Nashville & Birmingham area over the past couple weeks, we wanted to let our loyal clients how they can protect their dogs from the Canine Influenza Virus that is going around and could easily make its way to our area.

Canine Influenza is a highly infectious & contagious respiratory disease in dogs. There are two known strains of dog flu found in the United States, H3N8 & H3N2.
H3N8 is the current strain they have identified affecting these areas over the past few weeks.

The clinical signs of this illness are cough, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, and reduced appetite, but not all dogs will show signs of illness. Most dogs recover within 2 to 3 weeks. However, some dogs may develop secondary bacterial infections which may lead to more severe illness resulting in pneumonia & death in some cases although he percentage of dogs infected with this disease that die is very small. Some dogs have asymptomatic infections (no signs of illness), while some have severe illness with infection.

We are currently recommending the Canine Influenza vaccine for your dog if they go to any grooming, daycare, boarding, dog park facilities or come in contact with other dogs in social settings.

Initial vaccinations are available now at Oxford Veterinary Clinc & need to be boostered in 2-4 weeks (we are recommending 3 weeks). Full immunity is reached 2 weeks after the 2nd booster and then annual vaccination if your pet is at risk.

We have been able to secure doses of the Bivalent Vaccine to give to our patients that are at the most risk of contracting this virus.
Our Canine Influenza vaccine covers both H3N8 & H3N2 stains to provide the best protection for your pet. Please call today to get your pet vaccinated at 662-234-3930.

If you pet is coughing and been in contact with any other dogs-please call the clinic & stay in your car with your pet when you arrive to decrease any transmission of this infectious virus.
