Why do we sedate for orthopedic exams?
To find defects in certain joints, we need to put the joint through a specific range of motion. This can often be painful and sedation is necessary so we aren't fighting muscle tone. You can see the inappropriate forward and back motion of this knee due to the torn Cranial Cruciate Ligament. This is the most common orthopedic injury in large breed dogs.

Not a complaint post, but just sharing my day yesterday. Kinda long winded.
At work at 730 for surgery check-ins
8-9am, appointments for chronic allergies, euthanasia, consult internal med doc on a chronic diarrhea case, discuss new cancer findings for 2 different families, call lab and figure out a test, call in meds to pharmacy, call clients back about bloodwork and treatment changes.
9-2:30 surgery: bone biopsy to confirm osteosacoma, lymph node biopsy to see if a melanoma has metastasized, neuter, 2 mass removals, leg amputation on a dog hit by a car.
2:30-6pm 15 appointments: healthy dogs and cats, vaccines, allergies, congestive heart failure, call back owners, sick raccoon, establish new clients, behavioral consults, more itchy skin and ears.
Thank goodness I packed snacks, no lunch lol
9pm check on hospitalized patients
Today, 2 hours of paperwork and phone calls to catch up. It's my day off.
From 730am-6pm my techs have their own appointments, dispense and administer meds, follow up with clients, help with surgery, dentals and appointments. My kennel staff is cleaning, bathing walking and feeding boarders, recovering patients. The reception team is scheduling, handling phone calls emails and texts from clients and sending records and a million more things. The other doc is doing his appointments and surgeries.
Was it a crazy day? Yes. Was it unusually busy? No. Both doctors had fully booked schedules before the day began, and we still allowed double booking when we could.
This is why we can't always return calls promptly. This is why we can't always get you in last minute. This is why we can't always take an emergency case even if you have been a loyal client for "forever". We can only do so much and we will not let the quality of our care slip. Please always be patient with us. I know you are worried about your pet and it can be frustrating or scary when they are ill. We are always striving to provide the best care for every patient every time.
We partnered with Santa Rosa County Animal Services to fix this cats jaw.
For animals with entropion, their eyelid rolls in causing damage to the cornea because their lashes rub along the corneal surface. Not only is this painful, it can potentially lead to a loss of vision if bad enough. In young animals, we can tack their eye lids to see if the "grow into" their skin. Otherwise a surgical repair may be necessary.

I recommend Sileo or trazodone to help out those dogs that get scared with loud events. Both medications have their merits, so give us a call if you are worried about how your pet will react during Independence Day.
