Animal Companion Vaccines 101:

Vaccines help prevent many illnesses that affect pets. Vaccinating your pet has long been considered one of the easiest ways to help them live a long, healthy life. Not only are there different vaccines for different diseases, there are different types and combinations of vaccines.

Vaccination is a procedure that has risks and benefits that must be weighed for every pet relative to his lifestyle and health. Your veterinarian can determine a vaccination regime that will provide the safest and best protection for your individual animal companion.

If your beloved animal companions are in need of vaccines and care, please reach out and contact us for an appointment, where we can assess what your pet's specific vaccine needs are.

Call us @ (650) 359-3685 or email us @ [email protected]

We are open Monday-Friday 7:30am-6:30pm, Saturday 8:30am-4:30pm, and Sundays CLOSED

Did you know more than 50% of dogs and cats that are pets in the United States are considered overweight or obese?⠀

Obesity in pets is a big deal because it can lead to a multitude of health issues.⠀

Below are some tips on what to do with your overweight pet. ⠀

• Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian - Having a veterinarian examine your pet should be the first step if you are concerned about your pet’s weight. This way you can find out the cause of weight gain before trying to shed those pounds. Your vet can also help you create a diet plan that works best for your companion. ⠀

• Diet - Obviously for most overweight pets, diet factors a huge role. It is important to check the calorie content of the food you are feeding, as well as the treats your pet is getting. You’d be surprised how many calories pet treats (even dental treats) can add. Discuss with your veterinarian on how much you should be feeding your pet.⠀

• Exercise - Just like with people, exercise plays a big role in weight management for our furry companions. Even taking your dog on daily short walks or spending extra time letting your cat chase the laser can make a difference. If you struggle getting your pet to want to exercise, trying finding a toy that makes him work for his food - like a food dispensing ball, slow feeder, or puzzle.

• Weight checks - Checking your pet’s weight regularly can help you know if he is eating too much, or even losing weight too quickly. If you can’t weigh at home, speak with your veterinarian about doing monthly drop-ins for weight checks.

Pacifca Pet Hospital Veterinary Care Update: Pacifica Pet Hospital offers curbside veterinary service so everyone can keep safe and healthy during this time.

Veterinary practices are considered essential for the sake of our animal companion's medical needs. While veterinary clinics are still open, veterinary staff are taking precautions to limit human contact as much as possible.

Pacifica Pet Hospital has joined other practices in offering its curbside veterinary service. During this time, keeping everyone’s health in check is all-important, and this includes how we interact with our pets.

*Pacifica Patient Service

Appointments for pets can continue as normal thanks to the curbside approach. Instead of pet owners coming into the clinic with their pets, they can park in the parking lot and let the veterinary staff bring the cat or dog in for them. Owners should have the veterinary hospital’s phone number on hand to call when they arrive. You can then call the hospital and communicate remotely while he or she examines your animal companions.

*Can Pets Catch Coronavirus?

Curbside veterinary service certainly helps people avoid too much personal contact. One can avoid crowded sitting rooms and keep oneself and others safe. Perhaps, though, someone might worry that contamination can spread from human to pet. There is so far no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 can harm canines or felines. However, the virus may be able to sit on the pet for some time. Note, the novel coronavirus is not the same as canine coronavirus, which is an infection of the abdomen and is highly contagious among other canines.

*Keeping Your Pet and Others Safe

Limiting the transmission of germs from person to person involves how one cares for their pet as well. When walking the dog or letting the cat outdoors, it’s best that no one pets the animal. Keep your dog on the other side of you as you walk past strangers to maintain this. If you are sick, you should limit your interaction with your pet. Ask someone else to feed and walk the dog, and refrain from hugging and kissing your pet. If you have a question about your pet’s wellbeing, you can call us.

As for keeping up with routine veterinary care, a pet owner need not worry; Pacifica Pet Hospital curbside veterinary service can help keep your dog or cat healthy and everyone else safe too.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at 650.359.3685 or email at [email protected]

The 4th of July is just around the corner!
Most animals are extremely frightened by the sound of fireworks, and shelters see a 30-60% increase in lost pets every year around July 4th. Here are a few ways to keep your pet safe and reduce their stress:

• Keep pets indoors and create a place to hide
• Only allow your pet to go outside when absolutely necessary, and keep them on a leash
• If you can’t keep your pet indoors, ensure fences are secure and provide an outside place to hide
• Make sure your pet is wearing current ID tags
• Update your pet's microchip with your current contact information
• Play calm music to help mask the noise outside
• Distract your pet by offering their favorite toys, treats, and/or chews
• Talk to your neighbors about moving fireworks or noise makers away from houses

Please note that fireworks might start days in advance and continue throughout the weekend. If your pet is lost, please visit https://phs-spca.org/
