Today is FIP Awareness Day.
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an illness caused by a type of coronavirus that affects the GI tract. Most cats exposed to the virus will experience mild or no symptoms. Unfortunately, in about 10% of cats, the virus mutates and begins to spread throughout the body, causing severe illness.
FIP is more commonly seen in younger cats, with symptoms like weight loss, anorexia, fever, fluid buildup in the abdomen causing distention, and even neurological signs like seizures and incoordination. For years, FIP was a devastating diagnosis, with few treatment options available in the United States.
Thanks to recent advancements, new medications are now being used to treat this illness. With these treatments, more cats are surviving FIP and living happier, healthier lives.
