A yellow dog sits in the exam room, sitting back on her pelvis, hind legs extended straight towards her front legs. When she wants to move, she pulls her back end across the ground with her now muscular front limbs. She has worry in her brown eyes and looks anxiously to her owner, not sure what is going to happen next. She growls at me. This is Lemon.
Lemon was referred to me by another clinic as a “last ditch effort” to get her ambulatory. Hit by a car in mid July, her pelvis was fractured in 4 places and there was minimal improvement in her ability to move her legs after six weeks of rest and pain medication. So she was sent to me. On our first visit, the owner said, “They told me ‘Dr. Kimi is your only hope.” No pressure, right?
On the positive side, Lemon was actively engaged in life activities - eating well, playing with her sibling Cherry, and able to urinate and defecate on her own: all indicators of a fair prognosis for good quality of life. Additionally, on her first visit (despite her growling at me and generally being mistrustful of any move I made towards her), she demonstrated that she still had sensation and reflexes in her hind legs.
After five weeks of weekly therapy (sometimes twice a week), this is the result (see video): Lemon the Wonder Dog!
Teamwork and dedicated owners often produces results beyond expectation. Lemon still has a ways to go to - but the fact that she is starting to stand and move with her hind limbs is awe-inspiring to all who know her and have worked with her. She has courage, drive and determination. There is a lot to be learned from Lemon's example.
Dr. Kimi
PS. She doesn’t growl at me anymore.
PPS Rehab isn't only for dogs like Lemon. If you'd like to learn more, please give us a call.
