✨ Once upon a time, 8 years ago to be exact, there was a “little” pig name Doya 👑🐷 He was 6 months old, 150lbs, and his life was at a crossroads. He was at a local FFA and would be ki11ed in the next 2 days OR someone could save him before then 🤔

💜 Close by there was a couple named the Fuller-Wigg’s with a big backyard that became aware of his story and wanted to help, so they bought a trailer and rescued him the very next day.

🐐 Pretty quickly he settled in, loving a small pool, his 2 new goat sisters, and belly rubs. Acclimating to this new and cozy life, unaware of the alternative and tragic experience he almost had.

🐖 Doya was growing quickly, as was the love that his rescuers had for him. Their love for him, opened their eyes and hearts to seek out “more Doya’s” in need.

⏩⏳ Fast forward 8 years Doya remains the main character of this story.

👑 He is much much larger now and remains known for his gentle nature, his love of belly rubs, and his kindness to every pig (and human) that enters his domain. He is a living legend, a gift, an amazing individual, and an inspiration.

😞💜 I am heartbroken to share that we said goodbye to Cookie, our first resident. 💔

🐐 Cookie was deeply loved, gentle, curious, and the besttttt at making any leg a scratching post. Back in 2016, Cookie and her daughter Bertha sparked the dream that became Austin Farm Sanctuary. She had been “used” at a goat dairy for years but got injured giving birth to Bertha and was granted her freedom. Her individuality, confidence, and curiosity inspired everything we’ve built since.

🥰 Her final moments were filled with love, head scratches, and peace, thanks to our team. Cookie’s impact will live on forever, and we’ll always be grateful for the life-changing joy she brought into the world.

Rest easy, sweet girl. We love you. 🐐💜 We will look after Bertha for you. 🌈

Pumpkin patches all over the city are closing this week and making their goodies available for us! Currently there are 100s of pumpkins awaiting your transport at the below locations 🥰

Swing by in any size car or truck, grab what you can (non-rotten, carved, or painted) and bring them on out to 1165 Old Pin Oak Rd Paige TX 78659. Each dropoff gives you the opportunity to hand some out to the animals and do a self-guided visit.

🌈 Agave 💜 Last week we lost a truly special member of our flock, Agave. Many people don’t have the opportunity to get to connect with and know most of our bird residents as individuals. You may not know Agave, but if you did I am sure you would remember her uniqueness and kindness for a lifetime.

In the Spring of 2021 AFS took on the heavy task of pulling dying chickens from the back room of the local Bastrop Tractor Supply and trying to heal them. A majority of these babies died in our hands within minute or hours of being rescued. At just a day old they were shipped across the country in boxes of up to 30 individuals. After arriving they’d stay in the back room of TSC for 24hrs to “calm down”. Then the healthy ones were put onto the sales floor and the sick/injured ones would die under the heat lamps in the warehouse. This is the harsh reality that accompanies even “backyard flocks”. Those guys and girls come from somewhere and it’s tragic. Back to Agave.

One of the babies that joined us in the Spring of 2021 was Agave. She was a little healthier than the other chicks we were rescuing, and gave us our first feelings of confidence is a “healable” chick. In the coming days/weeks we brought more and more chicks home. Some of the healthy ones that had been around would peck at the new weak babies coming in, but not Agave. She would nestle her unbelievably small body against them for warmth. Stand close by while they ate food, and just generally respect their tiny often dying little selves.

As she grew and moved to be outside with other survivors this same matriarchal and kind personality showed itself. This is evident in the picture of her included below where, like a mama hen does her babies, she would put her wings over the other hens as they perched to keep them warm and safe.

This kindness and curiosity of Agave continued in the years to come. Many of you may have found her brooding an egg on the medical barn laptop (yet another motherly Agave staple).

Recently her health rapidly declined. She lost weight and energy similar to what we’ve seen from her other sisters (like Pineapple) and others in recent months/years.

🌎🐷 Today is World Farmed Animals Day. As an animal lover, this day carries a lot of weight. On one side there are organizations like AFS who have the honor and opportunity to share the beautiful possibility of what should be “the norm”, a kind and safe life for farmed animals. Simultaneously, however, today is a day where we need to reflect on and share the plight of the billions of deserving and precious non-human lives around the world who won’t get to rest peacefully tonight, nor know the loving touch of a human in their lives.

💜🐮 The juxtaposition of the emotions, memories, and stories that come with this day are profound. They can be uplifting and give hope, while also leading us to feel defeated and like we have an impossible task ahead.

🐥🐓 The weight, albeit heavy, is one that many of us have assigned ourselves to carry. Our deep love of animals compels us to act, to love, and to be unwavering in our defense of them. As animal lovers in a cruel world we don’t often have the space, capacity, nor energy to celebrate the small wins or the lives of those who are safe.

🌎🐐 It is important that we create space to celebrate those who are safe, remain hopeful for those who are not yet free, and stay strong under the weight of our mission. You are not alone. 🎉 Happy Rescue Day, Buddy! 💜 On September 4th 2020 the most precious little blind baby, Buddy, joined the sanctuary 🐐 His bravery, courage, and kindness is unmatched. 🐐🐷🐐 Alfie, Missy, and Miss Piggy are off the A&M Vet Hospital 🏥 Miss Piggy has skin cancer, has been receiving treatment for a year, and is going for a checkup. Alfie has suspected skin cancer from a spot we noticed under his tail. 🐷🚨 Urgent Rescue 🚨 This guy, Borris, needs our help. He is a little over 5 years old and has been escaping his enclosure and is in danger of being killed. He has also never received veterinary care, tusk/hoof trims, vaccinations, etc. 💜 He is being surrendered to us and immediately going to the vet to be neutered, have a spa day, and much more. Thanks to our medical fund that’s all covered 🚑 We were able to hire a transporter for about $400 so we could urgently get out there and bring him in before we get a freeze overnight 🙏 He has been at this home since he was 7 weeks old so it’s going to be a stressful and confusing time for him. 😞 Luckily soon he will be safe and living the #sanctuarylife Thank you for supporting our Medical Fund and allowing rescues like this to happen. 😘 If you want to help us cover the cost of his transport and/or send money for special snacks for him 🍎🍌 you can donate through Venmo or the various links in our bio / website austinfarmsanctuary.org 💜

🐶 never a dull moment and uneventful day here at the sanctuary. This girl is superrrrrr sweet and just looking for someone to love her. 👅 She loves to give kisses, is great with kids, and seems comfortable with other dogs from what we’ve seen along the fenceline.
